The ***OFFICIAL*** 2018 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread (1 Viewer)

Who was good! For like a game or 2. Fair point. So, he checks the athletic talent, but not necessarily the character build. Perhaps they can motivate him. Also, maybe this causes him to fall into the 3rd. Saw him mocked this morning at the end of the 3rd in 3 mocks. I'd be very happy with him at 92.
Agreed.  I would love to get him in the third.  I also think one of the biggest strengths of Tomlin is his ability to inspire and motivate a player.

I think that right now my big hope, that I highly doubt will happen, is:

  • 60 - Nick Chubb
  • 79 - James Washington
  • 92 - Malik Jefferson
Assuming we're going to lose Bell next year. Behind Barkley, Chubb is my #2 RB. I think he's just returning to what he was pre-injury, and his balance and vision are extraordinary. I think he's better between the tackles than Saquon, but not the same receiving talent. I do think he can easily catch 40-50 balls a year, but never 70+ like Barkley or Bell.

I don't think any of these players fall to any of these picks, but that's my ideal not what I think will actually happen.

Jerome Baker is another LB I’d be comfortable with along with some previously mentioned. Matthew Thomas was #1 in SPARQ, have to think he may be on their radar as well if they believe him to be a football player.

I feel like Vance McDonald is a wild card here.   If they are all in on him and sold on him being healthy, I don't think we need to spend a Rd2/3 pick on a WR.   Brown/JuJu/Leveon in a 2TE set with Jesse James and VMcDonald is still pretty GD scary to try plan a defense against.

also hoping that if/when Eli Rogers is medically cleared they pick him back up for depth -- he may/may not be ready for the beginning of the season but I'd be surprised if he's not ready mid year.
Maybe Justin Hunter will surprise us and reach his potential.

Yeah.  all other things being equal, of course I want a better WR3 than Hunter/DHB/possibly gimpy Eli Rogers -- but I think this team has more pressing needs on defense -- at least for rd 2 / rd 3 level picks.

I'll make sure I steer this ship correctly when Colbert and Tomlin call me from the red phone in the war room tonight.

They were linked to a bunch of different receivers during the pre-draft process.  It was clear they were looking for someone at that position before they traded Bryant, the urgency has only increased now.  Unless they feel like Justin Hunter is a plug-and-play replacement for what Bryant was bringing to the offense, then the urgency only remains the same.  I'd be very surprised if tonight ends and we haven't drafted a wideout.

The main guys I'd be happy with tonight are Sutton, Kirk, Washington, Miller and Pettis; ideally in the 3rd.

If they somehow get Washington or Sutton today... my lord. Anthony Miller or Dallas Goedert would make me happy as well.

Oh true, Goedert in the 2nd, or Gesicki end of the 3rd. I'd be happy with those as well.

What about if we traded 60 and 92 and got Sutton? I think he's very raw, but he could learn behind Juju and AB. Although, Kirk is a great slot WR and a master in the return game. Could be better value getting him and a defender at 92.

Too many WR’s in this draft to be trading up for one but the Steelers always have “their” guys over others and usually don’t force the issue.

Lot of WRs and TEs still available that could make an impact.  I'm on record as being kind of in love with Miller, I think he's going to be a great pro.  In terms of former Steelers, he reminds me a little bit of Emmanuel Sanders in that he's quick moreso than a long-range burner, but he finds the ball and makes catches downfield.  Kind of the exact opposite of Martavis.  If they want Martavis II, then DJ Chark is their guy.

He would bond pretty well with Haden seeing as they have a very similar background taking care of their brothers. Would be a good story.  Not sure about his actual play.
Seems slightly redundant to me with JuJu.  They have their all-World #1 in AB, the flanker in JuJu, I would think they'd want either another vertical threat or a jitterbug slot type.  A guy like Pettis would fit the bill for the latter.

Pettis, Miller, or Kirk would be pretty great. Kirk adds excellent return skills, so I have him at the top.

What if we traded a 7th round pick for Christian Hackenberg? I thought he was super raw, but had a shot to develop coming out of school. It's basically a throwaway pick on someone that could compete with Landry and Dobbs. He probably desperately wants a new team and perhaps could develop with better coaching.

We could possibly sign him after he's cut, but I'm not sure what competition for him might look like.

Gettleman: "Jonathan Stewart is in his 10th year and he has not lost anything!"

If you watch Stewart as a young player, and now, and think he hasn't lost anything, I don't think you're very good at reviewing film. Using that to justify taking a RB at 2 might be a bit of a stretch. Just say that you guys feel bad about what you did to Manning so you're going to give him a weapon to extend the length of his career by 2 seasons or so at the expense of the franchise's future.

I wonder if the Steelers would be open to Antonio Callaway if AB vouches for him. It would seem a stretch but they’ve been open to taking good faith chances in the past. It’s bit them a bit but, still, they have done it.

I don't know, he smoked weed right before the combine. Doesn't really make the best first impression. If they can get him in the 7th they might go for it.

Telling that the Jets gave him exactly 0 snaps last year, even when their season was lost and they were better off losing.  I wouldn't give up anything for him when he's a near certainty to get cut during camp.  If he's even better than Dobbs, it's incrementally so and Dobbs probably has more upside.

Seems highly unlikely.  It seemed unlikely BEFORE he tested positive at the combine and admitted to smoking shortly before it.  Knucklehead.

Ya, he’s a dummy for sure but he has been working with AB. They gave Karlos Williams, Martavis Bryant, Le’veon, and Mike Adams second and even third chances.

I wish Karlos Williams had worked out better. He was a talented back that ran really well when on the field.  Also, good chance that 0 of those players will be on the field next year, that might be telling.

Allegedly a team source was asked about why Bryant was traded and responded "Good luck coaching him." Pretty telling, if accurate. Even with immense talent, locker room composition matters.

May as well trade one of our extra thirds for Guice and get to work on whatever bodies he must be hiding in his trunk.

I had Washington just a hair below Sutton and Moore due to athleticism but he’s been clocked at over 21 mph on the field. He’s plenty fast and he’s a technician. He was always open in college and Rudolph didn’t get him the ball enough despite his gaudy stats. He’s going to fit right in and good luck defending AB, JuJu and Washington.

His productivity is unquestionable.

Biletnikoff award winner.

PFFs #2 overall rated WR (Ridley, Washington, Moore, Sutton) ;)

  • OVERVIEW:
  • Maintains speed in and out of breaks. Allows him to get on cornerbacks quickly and run away from them at the top of the route.
  • Ranked eighth in the nation with 3.25 yards per route against Power-5.
  • Led the nation with 815 yards on deep passes in 2017 and ranked second with eight touchdowns on deep passes.
  • Caught all 10 of his slant targets for 192 yards and three touchdowns.
  • Ranked fourth in the nation with 343 yards in contested situations and tied for third with three touchdowns.
  • Top receiver during Senior Bowl practice week.
  • Dominated both the 1-on-1s, particularly against press coverage, and the team drills.
  • Other than posts and slants, did most of his work outside the numbers.  Can he be a middle-of-the-field option?
  • Production certainly padded in Big 12, where he was given plenty of 1-on-1 situations with room to work.
  • Has continued to improve his ability to win at the catch point
  • BOTTOM LINE: Washington has been one of the nation’s most efficient deep receivers over the last three years as he showed the ability to run away from cornerbacks and he’s continued to improve his game in contested situations. His speed plays well on the field, especially his ability to maintain it in and out of his cuts, and he answered questions about facing press coverage with a dominant Senior Bowl. Washington should be in the mix to be one of the top WRs off the board.
#1 in nation on deep pass receptions and yards. #1 "elusiveness rating" in nation on balls caught more then 10 yards down field.

from Matt Harmon...

James Washington, Oklahoma State

NFL comp: Marvin Jones. One of the most productive receivers in college football, the 2017 Biletnikoff Award winner comes to the NFL after racking up over 4,400 yards and 39 touchdowns through four years at Oklahoma State. Washington has all the skills necessary to produce at the next level, especially in some crucial phases. What Washington brings to the table is both rare and valuable: He wins down the field and on contested catches. His college game film is littered with occasions where he adjusts to a deep throw and positions himself to win the ball in the air. No receiver in this draft class can match his ball-tracking ability in the vertical game. While Washington may never check all the boxes of a traditional No. 1 receiver, he can be the lead dog outside for an NFL team based on those two traits alone. We've seen Marvin Jones prove to be that kind of player for the Detroit Lions over the last two seasons.
