The ***OFFICIAL*** 2019 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread (3 Viewers)

Conner, Foster, Snell, Rosie Nix all out this week against the Rams.

JuJu limited.   Listed as questionable.

Trey Edmunds, Barron, Switz, McDonald, Pouncey and Alualu all were full particpants.
Thanks for the update. I *might* have to start Trey as a bye week filler. I know he left a potential TD on the field last week.

Thank god Switz is OK.

I wish we would see Hodges.

I don't think I can think of a non rookie QB who has looked anywhere near as clueless as Rudolph who ever improved to the level of competent NFL starter.

I can think of countless examples of people saying oh just wait, this QB will get better in time, and zero examples of it actually happening.  Im sure there are some, I just can't recall who they are.  No current NFL starter by my estimation.

Usually QBs who become something come out and show flashes, like Hodges did, and then struggle as defenses adjust.  Rudolph has OK stats because defenses allow him to dump off 95 percent of his throws, but he looks awful.

Any thoughts On what to expect out of D Johnson today? I expected a big game last week, but they didn't even look his way all game. I am thinking he might draw Ramsey a lot today.

The only real loss was to the Pats. A healthy Ben and this team is a super bowl contender.

gotta love having a young core getting experience. Just wish we could run the ball better and that JuJu would show up more.

Anyone still going to tell me I should give Switzer a break after that "PR in Reverse" today?  Get that dude gone already.

GREAT game by the D.  Minkah and Haden both playing fantastic right now.

The Fitzpatrick trade was so good for the Steelers and was roundly trashes even by their own fans when it happened. He is an elite defensive player and who has proven to be elite.

I think we can put the Minkah arguement to rest.

But 3 obvious bad play calls.

Play action from the 5 when you know they are blitzing was awful.  Luckily punting from the 20 instead of the back line or giving up 7 worked out.

Inside handoff on 2nd and 12.....Again when we know they are blitzing.  That’s a guaranteed 3rd and long.

And we pass rushed again when they finally started running the ball and Gurley gashed us.  We have to cover the hole that Watt leaves.

The defense is really good and seemingly getting better.

Obviously a great defensive effort .This is the best Steelers defense in a quite a while.

Rudolph is still a work in progress but I think he played a pretty good game. Certainly not perfect but pretty good considering he didn’t have much of a running game and was a victim of a few drops.

I know that Tomlin isn’t going to get any love from Steelers fans but he’s got this team playing pretty well considering the injuries the team has been dealing with

If Ben was healthy and they beat Seattle, would they have traded for Fitzpatrick?
I think they still would have inquired and been willing to trade for him, but maybe the Dolphins would have traded him somewhere else (assuming they traded with the Steelers because the Dolphins thought the Steelers were going to have a bad record because they lost Ben).

I'm coming around on Tomlin a little.  He's dealing with a young QB who appears to be a major step down in talent from a hall of fame QB and he has done a very good job of letting the guy just manage the game.  He understands that the defense is going to win them the games this year.  My only questionable call today is going for it on 4th on 1 from their own 30ish up by 2 in the 4th quarter (given how dominant the defense had been all day).  Then to call a play from the shotgun?    It worked though so what do I know?

This team is smoking hot right now but unfortunately so is Baltimore.  They have a strangle hold on the division now.  I think with the way this defense is playing and Tomlin and Fichtner putting Rudolph in low risk situations, this team should still make the playoffs as a wildcard.  I can't believe I'm even saying that given the start to the season.  So happy to be proven wrong.

Not sure it is true but I heard on the drive back from the game that the Steelers are currently the #6 team if the playoffs were today

7 games left in the season (5 road and 2 home).  I think they'll be favored in all of them (Baltimore road game is week 17 where they'll likely be resting starters).  They should be able to get to 10 wins which will secure a playoff berth.  Buffalo still has road games in NE, Dallas and Pittsburgh and a home game against Baltimore.  The 2 wildcards should be Oakland and Pittsburgh.

3 way tie for 2nd wildcard (with Indy and Oakland) and Steelers have the best conference record of the 3 teams.  They would be the 6 seed as of today!

Switzer better not be on the team next week. I think his punt flub leading to a safety finally sealed his fate. I get it, he’s a nice guy and he’s been through a lot... you still gotta play.

I still disagree.

The ball gets caught correctly almost every time.
We see any number of flubs per week.  while we should address that now is not the time. We have no room for errors like that if he flubs

The return was bad but but The play action call on first down was the error.

Somehow Cleveland gets the chance to determine our fate.  We should be favored both games but ......

I’ll bet on our D.  We already have mostly stopped the run and add constant pressure and ball hawking.  I’m ready to quote Bueller.

Switzer re-injured his back last night and considering this is a short week he probably won’t be available on Thursday night.

I'm not so sure. They still have to play the Texans, Rams, 49ers and Bills. They are on a roll, but those 4 games aren't easy. The Rams and Bills are the two weakest teams, but the Ravens face them on the road. I think the Steelers probably lose at least 1 more game before week 17, but week 17 could be for the AFC North.

I'm worried about the 2 Browns games in a 3 week span. I'm hopeful that our D can help us pull off some wins, but the browns have underperformed most of the year. If they're somehow able to play up to their talent, they could be formidable.

Since Minkah has become their free safety, the Steelers have allowed a QB rating under 10.0 on deep passes. That's the lowest, by far, in the NFL since week 3. In the two games before his arrival it was 141.7.  first reported by Aaron M. Sprecher AP

Yes.  The Minkah trade was not a good trade it was a GREAT trade.

I never thought I'd say this about another Steeler's safety.. but his instincts and ball-hawking skills remind me of TP43.

And as much as I've lost faith in Tomlin, particularly in making the right in-game adjustments and play calls, I'm very impressed with the quick turnaround this team's defense has made since Shazier went down.  They went from a team that looked completely lost on that side of the ball to arguably the best DEF in the NFL, and Tomlin definitely deserves credit for that.

And while the playoffs are now realistic, as a fan it's hard to get really excited as I don't see Rudolph getting us a playoff win in NE, or in the SB if we somehow get there.  No idea if Duck can be better but he seems to have the 'it' factor that Mason completely lacks.

I thought Mason played pretty well last night.   He needs to keep improving but he's doing enough to win and does a good job protecting the ball.   He only has 6 career starts so it is still way too soon to make a call on him IMO.

On the other hand I don't get the love for Duck at all.  He did okay managing the one game he started (136-1-1) but did nothing that showed me he has an 'it' factor.

The backup quarterback in Pittsburgh ALWAYS has the "it" factor. I think first grade teachers drill that into their students before they get to teaching the alphabet.

Rudolph played fine, did what he needed to do.  His teammates certainly didn't help him on that side of the ball.

Who do you replace him with?  Eli Rogers?  Some other return specialist?

Who cares? A paper bag with a hand cutout taped to it stuck into the air. Why are there people defending Ryan Switzer? He’s had one punt return over 10 yds on the season. Why is this terrible player taking a roster spot? It’s outrageous. After Switzers backwards gaf Johnson took the next punt 14 yds which may be longer than any Switzer play this season that hasn’t been a kick return.

Switzer usually catches the ball.  So should anyone who makes it to the NFL.  But he's 5-foot nothing and about 120 soaking wet.  A mild breeze knocks him down.  He does nothing with the ball once he catches it.

Oh, and speaking of wasted roster space - why is Anthony Chickillo still on this team?  Even without the assault (yeah I know.  See: Ray Lewis) he's still horrible.  I have season tix and will occasionally catch myself watching him get beat on every play.  He almost never touches a skill player on the offense, but comes rushing in once the play is done (See: Ray Lewis again).

Pretty sure this team is going to the playoffs - could even contend for the AFC North but would have to sweep Cleveland and avoid the kind of late-season stumble in Arizona that often seems to happen to the Steelers out west. Buffalo is going to miss the playoffs, and I think Pittsburgh and Oakland take the Wild Cards.

It sounds like Switz and Chickillo miss Thursday night so.  Sorry but someone had to break the bad news.

On the plus side it sounds like Conner WILL be active Thursday

The Steelers running game and commitment to it has let them down. Hopefully Conner will be ready to contribute this week. Seems like if they can play D and run the ball (especially in the redzone) they could win many of their remaining games. Rudolph is what he is, just need to put less on his plate.

The receivers and TEs need to play better too.

Miami fan checking in, things have changed a lot and I did post when the trade for Fitz happened that I would not be shocked if the Steelers somehow end up with the better end of the deal...that guy had to help with Cooper Kupp yesterday or make it impossible for others to score. He ran one back vs Indy.

Gotta give the Steelers some real props to get themselves to 5-4 with No starting QB, lost their stud RB, traded their #1 Head case Wideout, they've managed to stabilize things a bit.

The Steelers RBs behind Conner all stink. Edmunds seems to be unable to think for himself one iota when the play starts, he just makes a mad dash to wherever the presnap read was. There is often a gaping hole if he just cuts back, but he just runs into the arms of the defenders. The worst evidence of this was last week when Decastro completely shut down the left side of the line after pulling, and Edmunds ran straight into the middle for -1 instead of a walk-in touchdown.

Samuels isn't much better. Late in the game when we have plenty of timeouts he is so often concerned with getting out of bounds that he does that instead of trying to pick up a first down, and we end up punting with plenty of time left. Also, he dances around too much and doesn't have the Lev burst to make up for the slow starts. I was high on him when he was working in tandem with Conner, but I don't think he's any kind of answer at RB. I would be surprised if we don't make a move at RB this offseason with one of our first 3 picks in the draft. At WR too. James Washington looks like he's trying to step up, and Diontae is starting to look good, but having two OK wrs behind Juju isn't enough, and we could really use a good punt returner that doesn't fumble it every third return (Diontae).

They just won two of the three toughest games remaining on their schedule.  If Baltimore has clinched in Week 17, that could end up a walk too.

There is no reason this team can't win 6 of their last 7.

Samuels is versatile but more of a jack-of-all-trades, master of none kind of guy.    I haven't seen enough of Brooks-James to know but he appears to be only marginally better than Edmunds and Edmund stinks.   I gotta think that Jay Ajayi or CJ Anderson would be huge improvements over those two stiffs.

Foster and Connor back might be just enough to eek out a win in Cleveland but Chubb and ######## 13 can make big plays at any time.  We’ll need another game where our mistakes don’t kill us which is freaking nerve racking.

Ill play the Pitt D because that makes it even worse :)

Chubb is a beast and worries me far more than anyone else on that offense.
