Was Grupe really that bad? Made 10 out of 11 FG's. I guess the downside was he missed three PAT's out of 21.
Still... The musical chairs at the PK position sort of feels like a "grass is greener" situation for some of these teams. Drop the guy you have in hopes that there is somebody else who's better (and currently unemployed)? Not to mention, half of these moves end up being teams acquiring retreads that someone else cut a week or two ago.
I'm really becoming an advocate for the TMPK position, particularly in larger (14-16) team leagues. I've spent way too much time (and FAAB $$) trying to acquire the next kicker to be signed (or re-signed). Feels like half of the league has switched kickers at some point this season. That never used to be a thing, from what I can remember. Maybe there's just not as many decent kickers as there are teams. Are kickers getting worse, expectations getting higher, or are they just more injury-prone these days? Or does the longer XP distance have something to do with it?
He was 18 for 26 on the season. Thats atrocious
Sorry... I meant to say Badgley, not Grupe.
But, that sort of makes my point.... Grupe is terrible for NOS. Meanwhile, Indy grabs Badgley when Schraeder goes down. Badgley wasn't great, but he wasn't terrible, either. Then, IND cuts Badgley and signs Grupe? I don't get it. But, obviously, there's more to the story than just those stats (or I would think they would have stuck with Badgley).
The other interesting piece is that there doesn't seem to be another position in the NFL that is so streak-dependent. Almost like basketball shooters or hitters in baseball (or even golfers).... When kickers are on, they're on. When they aren't, some of them can massively struggle. Probably because so much of what they do is mental compared to other NFL positions.
Nick Folk was cast aside several years ago as being washed up and done as an NFL kicker. Then someone (NE?) signed in out of desperation a couple of years ago. Now, he's one of the top kickers in the league, at least in terms of accuracy. He's missed one kick (out of 40+) all year.
Meanwhile, Harrison Butker was not long ago considered one of the best there is. This year? He's actually worse than Badgley was, in terms of how many he's missed (3 FG and 4 PAT's). But, KC doesn't seem to be as quick to move on. Maybe they realize the grass isn't always greener, and at least they know what they have (as opposed to opening Door #2 and finding something worse).
