The oddest of these events were two phone calls received by the station in the days leading up to The Man Caves planned debut by a man representing himself as Skipper. In one of the calls, the imposter threatened legal trouble for the station and possible financial penalties if it bumped Mike and Mike for The Man Cave, according to three people with knowledge of the calls.

While it seemed odd that someone as high-profile as Skipper would meddle with programming at a local affiliate, the imposter was apparently convincing to Carmean, who took the calls. In addition to mimicking Skippers accent (Skipper is a native of North Carolina), the caller also knew details about the stations inner workings and called from a number with an 860 area code in Connecticut, where ESPN is headquartered.

Carmean told people the show was dead and that the president of ESPN had killed it, one person with knowledge of the events said. Carmean also alerted Redskins management about the calls.

The ruse was uncovered, however, when Redskins President Bruce Allen, after hearing that Skipper was upset about something at WTEM, called the ESPN president to assure him that Allen would look into Skippers concerns. According to three people with knowledge of the conversation, a confused Skipper thanked Allen, then called his deputies at ESPN and asked them to figure out what Allen had been talking about.

After a flurry of phone calls between ESPN management and WTEM management, it became clear that Carmean had been duped. Skipper telephoned Allen to say the calls had been a hoax. When told that Skipper had not called him and that he had no problem with The Man Cave Carmean expressed relief, sources said.

Even the promos sound horrible. Jason Reid does not sound remotely comfortable. Let's not even start on the show name.

Like Tony always says, "Anybody can do a Monday or Tuesday show, let's see what you got on Thursday!"

 
I'll be there next week for a 9 day stay. My oldest friend, we were literally in the same crib as babies, has decided to join us for a few days. Great guy, even greater wife... um... vegetarians. Restaurant suggestions? I did a search and some reading, but prefer recommendations from the locals. They're also wine snobs. I don't think the wine country is a terrible idea, but they have a home between Napa and Sonoma valleys. A better idea is probably wine tasting spot where we can do some top flight flights from around the world. You got this kinda thing back there?

 
Jose Andres has opened a fast casual vegetarian spot near GW. It's called Beefsteak (after the tomato).

For a fancy dinner, Restaurant Nora isn't meatless, but has been a go to fine dining restaurant for vegetarians since the 90s. If you're in town on a Friday, there's a place called Elizabeth's Gone Raw that offers a five course vegan and raw tasting menu that has gotten fine reviews.

For wine, there are plenty of good wine bars in DC. I'd say that Proof is probably the best, but I have to admit that I always end up drinking cocktails instead of win there (the "Baller" Rob Roy is awesome). Your friends would be pretty much limited to a number of well-done appetizers and a great cheese plate to accompany the wine there. But that's par for the course for a wine bar. I don't do much different except I do the cheese plate and chacuterie.

That's a misleading name imo. I'd be pissed if I went in there expecting to eat beef.

 
"The Man Show" is horrendeous. To be fair, it appears I'm not their target audience as evidence by not being included in their morning prayer session.

It's been a while since my wine snob days, but my experience was that Virginia wines were generally equivalent to Ca wines at the next price point down. So an acceptable $15 Virginia wine was equivalent to an acceptable $10 California wine.

Virginia really depends on the winery. There are some terrible Virginia wines, but also some good wines. California definitely has higher peaks and floors, but best of Virginia can hold up.

I've converted a few people with Barboursville Octagon.

I don't drink and know nothing about wine, but I'm going to guess that's just a popular thing for Californians to say. I'm not saying Virginia wines are as good, but I'd bet many of them would fail a blind taste test.

Are these people who would be completely disgusted by being in the presence of meat? If not, then try Eden Center in Falls Church. It's a Vietnamese shopping center with tons of restaurants and some a certain to be vegetarian only. However, you will likely walk by many places with animals in plain sight.If that would bother them, there is a vegetarian restaurant called Sunflower in Vienna. I've never been, but I hear it's good and popular with the vegetarians.

Also have a location in Falls Church on route 7 not too far from Eden Center. Traffic is a nightmare tho as that is the dreaded Seven Corners intersection.

Every five years or so, when the wife's away, he'll drool over fries while moaning a burger down. He's dead if she reads this. Of course, I'm the bad influence even though he invented "golfing" as a code word for "hamburgers" back when he cheated monthly. She went vegetarian at age six, on her own, because she couldn't understand/cope with eating animals. So yeah, she's a little put off by a rare ribeye but I eat them in front of her, respectfully as possible. ;)

For this trip, I would like to take her some place completely meatless just because. Thanks for the suggestions. Vienna/Falls Church, perfect.

I've been reading about Virginia wine off and on for a month. Barboursville and a couple others have my attention, but I may go for that ride when my company is back in Napa. ;)

I sent him this article. His response was, please. Followed by a short lecture about length of growing seasons.

This is about right. VA wine is pricey, too affluent around here.

Yeah, last report I saw he had supposedly carjacked another vehicle and was seen in the area of Little River Turnpike (236) and the Beltway.

Staggered start works out great. Nats early, first period of the Caps, then switch over to Wiz. They should get to halftime around 8:40, which is should be just after the start of the third period. After that I'll just chase the happy. Or given our usual fortunes, the least sad.

 
Also, #### the Nats for trying to get rid of Chuck Brown as the home run music. Really surprising, they've been doing great work from a PR standpoint, building up a lot of good will.
