I appreciate the suggestions, seriously I do, but I guess I wasn't describing what I'm seeking very well. Taco Bamba is fast food in a crowded (kind of dirty) corner. I've eaten there, alone, and was fine with it, but I'm taking people out who want to sit down and have a drink, great food, some laughs. Pizza, tacos, fast food, no. Two in my crew, the ladies fwiw, do not like Asian. So these might be great but too low budget or wrong food. I'm happy to drop a grand on 7 people in Annapolis tomorrow, if the wine is overpriced enough. I just don't want to have to dress up for a meal. We'll do that in DC the night before leaving. I would have been happy to drop $500 on 4 today, including a couple good bottles of wine. Taco Bamba, not what I'm looking for. I'm trying to impress people with my fbg connect here and it's become a standing joke.
We ended up at Legal Seafood in the mall at Tyson's. Eesh.

One of my favorites (although I haven't been there in ages) is La Cote D'Or Cafe in Arlington at the Falls Church exit for Rt 29 off 66. Wonderful french bistro.

...I don't know much about the Fairfax area, and better with Arlington/Alexandria. The Great American Restaurants chain is generally decent quality, and I think they have some restaurants out that way like Sweetwater Tavern.
If you want to drive closer in, you could try something like Ray's The Steaks in Arlington. Dress code is casual; should be okay as long as not in a t-shirt and shorts.

If it's not too late for Vienna, Clarity Bistro is exactly what you're looking for. If you have a less than satisfactory meal there, I'd be very surprised. Rock Star pairing of culinary talent in that kitchen. For exactly what you are looking for (expense account dining where you actually feel like you ate cuisine worthy of expense account prices rather than expense account rents), there's not that much to be had in that area.

I have no complaints about Maple Avenue Restaurant, but I don't think it's what you're looking for, but Tim Ma's other restaurant in that general area, Water & Wall, might be:

I have never, and I mean never, ever, failed to find what people are looking for in terms of dining in the DC area, especially when price tag isn't a deterrent, and I'd really like to know if anything I may have recommended during your last visit didn't live up to expectations, because I take that kind of thing personally, and I know my Chef peers in the area do the same...
...caveat, you are catching me at a tough time, all things considered...but I probably can use the distraction, as it's just me and (since you bring up a somewhat non-mainstream grape like Arneis (Roero, please, you little rascal) a bottle of Assyrtiko (Santorini) just whiling away the hours remembering my friend as he'd want it: with a football game on...any football game. Ugh...

You could try this pop-up, by Top Chef Alums Mike Isabella/Jenn Carroll. Mosaic District, Fairfax. They are talented Chefs with an incentive to overdeliver seeing as how this is the test-drive for what's planned on being the premier restaurant in S.W. (yikes!) DC. Mike is somewhat the definition of Celebrity Chef, but does take his food very seriously, and I'd wager that under circumstances like these, he'd be quite motivated to be swinging for the fences.
It really, really sucks that Gypsy Soul didn't work out in this space. Long story. RJ Cooper is a culinary talent, and personality, of immense proportions, but he really, really needs the kind of arrangement Roberto Donna finds himself in now - with a business partner that's over-proficient at handling the business part, so he has literally nothing to do but purchase and cook anything he damn well pleases...he's a damn genius with ingredients.
We're losing this at the end of the year. Very sad.

2941 is THE favorite of the Northrop folks, walking distance from offices. So this is fantastic stuff nittany. Thank you thank you. I'm off to Annapolis so won't be posting much but I will report back in a day or so after trying one of these suggestions.

Too bad I missed you this trip. Would have liked to show you around. We're normalaly closed Tuesdays amd Wednesdays, but open this week for holiday hours. My favorite IPAs on tap right now are Planets Align (think Alpine Nelson), Profits of Pride, and See the Light. Imperial Porter on Nitro is awesome too as is both reds. Gallows is an Imperial (malt forward. Think Dluble *******) and Stumbled is nice and hoppy. Hope you have a good time.

Never used it on New Year's and am wondering the same. Obviously depending on what time you want the car to pick you up you can count on surge pricing. I need to go to/from Arlington and Kingstowne - or maybe just home from Kingstowne. Wouldn't shock me to see surge pricing three times normal pricing.

I can't really think of too many "breastaurant"-type places in Alexandria. Just across in Arlington, maybe you could start at Crystal City Sports Pub and then mosey on over to the "gentlemen's club," Crystal City Restaurant.
I could name some sports bars in the Old Town Alexandria area with good food and vibes. I'm sure they have some attractive waitresses, but not really why people go there.

I need to get out to the brewery but I'm not a hophead, I can't do the IPAs. Well, I can do the Black IPA, perhaps a Black Tiger. Imperial Porter (Plasticine) sounds good too.

That shirt is my design! That's the name of our Imperial Stout. We need to brew that again soon. We have a bunch resting in bourbon barrels right now. All the beers are song lyrics. That one is from The Doors The End, so the short is in the Doors' font. We've been out of them for a long time. Maybe print some more for the next release.
Taps are defiantly hop forward right now. We are tapping a Mil Stout and a Wee Heavy in the next week or two. I'm a big fan of the Pilsner too. Forgot to mention that one earlier.

That third period was nuts. But a costly win as Beagle is to have surgery. Looks like Backstrom is ok after also leaving the game last night. Carlson won't travel to NC tonight and will miss a few games.
