W&OD is also hilly -- especially from Roosevelt Island to Ballston.  Would be a tough ride for a kid.

Biking from the airport to Roosevelt Island and spending some time there is good with kids too.  There's a boardwalk around the marsh in the center of the island -- pretty much always going to see some cool critters.  Plus the big plaza/TR statue.
That's the Custis Trail. W&OD starts in Shirlington and goes up Four Mile Creek. Custis does eventually cross over and connect to it out near the East Falls Church Metro. But W&OD is a rail trail, so the grade is pretty mellow.

Tremendous influence on the high-end DC Culinary scene. I'm from the Bob Kinkead family tree myself, but many of my friends, acquaintances, mentors and peers trace their roots to Chef Richard. While his savory food was certainly exceptional, he made his bones as a Pastry Chef, and that's where his talent shined the most. People often used the words 'whimsical' or 'capricious' to describe his savory food...those terms relate directly to the strength of his culinary talent being drawn from the pastry kitchen.

The plan a couple weekends ago, for our first ride, was to do Gravelly Point to Roosevelt Island. But, as we approached the 14th Street Bridge, they asked if we could go into DC, so we detoured. Bike riding allowed on Roosevelt Island?

My favorites are Rock Creek on the the weekends and the towpath up to Great Falls.
Yeah, I think a ride from Gravelly to the Zoo would be fun. Once it's not 100 degrees on a day that I'm off work and we're in town, I think we'll give that a try.

Good idea about the towpath.

Are there good park and ride spots other than Gravelly Point and Roosevelt Island?

went to dog money brewery in leesburg saturday. theres 8 beers on tap. got the flight & there were a few that I liked. the tripel & ipa were decent. the food was pretty good for a brewery. will be going back

I just wanted to profess my love for Annie Yu the Fox 5 reporter in here.Actually got to meet her a couple years ago when she did a story down this way and had no idea who she was at the time but she came off as a really super nice woman and not bad to look at either.Had no idea she was also a cheerleader for the Skins at one time.

I moved to a place in Chevy Chase DC in the summer.  The commute was great.  Now that school has started up and Beach Drive is closed, the commute is ... not so great.
You've got this going for you, which is good...not! It is going to affect the other roads in NW DC, because when you shut down a road, the cars gotta go somewhere!!!

Massive Road Closure Coming to Northwest DC Thursday; Beach Drive to Be Shut Down for Months

The National Park Service is beginning a three-year rehabilitation project for Beach Drive beginning Sept. 22.

By Dan Taylor (Patch Staff) - September 20, 2016 12:04 pm ET

WASHINGTON, DC — Attention, commuters near Georgetown: that winding road you take through Rock Creek Park in Northwest is going bye-bye for a long, long time. Authorities will be shutting down a huge section of Beach Drive until Spring 2017 starting this Thursday.

The National Park Service is about to begin the Beach Drive rehabilitation project, which will last three years and will be completed in four segments. The first segment will begin Sept. 22 and will involve shutting down Beach Drive between Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway NW to Tilden Street NW until Spring 2017, according to an NPS statement.

The entire project will take three years to complete the rehabilitation of all four segments of Beach Drive.

"Each segment of Beach Drive will be closed in both directions 24/7 during work," the NPS statement reads. "The project includes full depth pavement reconstruction, which requires excavating the entire area and placing a new gravel base before new asphalt paving; improvements to pedestrian and bicycle trails in collaboration with the DDOT; DC Water storm drain rehabilitation and improvement projects; installation and upgrades of raised pavement markers, centerline rumble strips, guardrails and road signs to provide safer road conditions for drivers; parking area reconstruction and rehabilitation; traffic signal and streetlight replacement; and the rehabilitation of six bridges."

The paved multi-use trail will remain open for pedestrians and cyclists during daylight hours while construction is ongoing.

First day of fall has me in the mood... any tips on where should I go for some apple cider donuts?  I don't mind a weekend drive.
Not apple cider, but the Apple House in Linden, VA, has apple butter cinnamon donuts. Great donuts when hot. I think they lose quite a bit as they cool off, though.

I have been a Georgetown jogger in the past.  The Capital Crescent Trail was one of my three primary routes.
cool - i need a spot to place a scene where a Georgetown girl is attacked while jogging that is both secluded enough to give cover to an attacker but close enough to the hustlebustle that she can hope to be rescued. i've been down some of the Towpath, which is what gave me the idea. anything?

Hey, am planning to take my daughter to the Folger Shakespeare Library on Saturday morning (I really know how to live, I know). Is it going to be mental due to the African American History Museum opening, or will I be ok if I come in on New York Ave and stay on that side of Capitol Hill

I assume you'll be ok. You'll be pretty far away.

The Rock Creek trails are probably better bets (that's where Chandra Levy was killed).  The Capital Crescent trail is often fairly crowded with runners, but if a runner were alone enough to be attacked, it's kind of far away from any commercial neighborhoods.   Rock Creek park has some overpasses and other kind of dangerous places, but it also generally runs along some major DC arteries and there are times when the what looks like deep woods are actually about 100 yards of tress with Mass Ave. on the other side.

The towpath at the aqueduct under Key Bridge where all the kids hang out getting high.

thx

Is that at the Key park or the underpass to Whiterhurst?
It's right at the Whitehurst. Most of them get down there via the steps on the Whitehurst at the intersection with M.

That rectangular stone arrangement is what's left from an elevated aqueduct that used to cross from the canal over to Rosslyn.

ETA: As RHE alluded to, Rock Creek Park has a long history of sexual assaults and murders. But it's so well insulated by all the trees and steep valley walls that you really have no sense of how close you are to civilization.

A 1:00 pm Redskins-Ravens game next Sunday, potentially with Nats and O's games. Nats should be out in LA. O's could be at home.

decent chances this hurricane barrels right into us. buy all the toilet paper and spam you can find
Daughter and wife are supposed to be going 'camping' this weekend with her girl scout troop. They are staying in cabins, but if it's a hurricane, you'd think they'd cancel or postpone the trip!

Coming up this Sunday for a week, but really only have Sunday to do my tourist shtick.

Is the new African American smithsonian just impossible to get into? I know all reserved tickets are gone, but is there a huge wait on the standing line?

I assume if all the reserved tickets are gone, then it will be impossible to get in. I have no plans to even try to go there until maybe next Spring.

anyone been to Chop Stick Cafe in Winchester?

ive been three times, usually get the sushi and some entrée. amazing every time ive been. highly recommended
I live pretty close and have driven by it a bunch thinking "I'll have to check it out soon" then I forget. Winchester has quite a few good restaurants outside of chains.

some worth mentioning? its about a 30 minute drive for me so im open to trying some

I'll post more when I have more time, but there's a carribbean hole-in-the-wall called Tropical Island Cafe (or something like that) on - I think - Picadilly & Braddock about a block west of the walking mall. Food's good and the owner is worth the price of admission by himself.

Also, Nana's Irish Pub in Middletown is somewhere I go often.

I'll follow up with some more later

I was thinking of doing it in the dead of winter.  That usually tamps down crowds... Its worked for both the Spy Museum and the Holocaust Museum.

I think they release some same-day passes every day at maybe 9 AM, but you have to be in line pretty early to make sure you can get them. I think I read that people who got in line at around 6 or 7 recently were able to get tickets for that day, but not sure about much later than that.

Oof. I can wait.
