dialup on netZero + fapping to slow loading lady pics + mom picks up phone to call auntie = worst thing ever.
worse than fapping to AOL chat room lady while praying that the other person in the chat room was really a lady?
I knew better than to do that. I often posed as a girl in the those chatrooms. :bag: :Samantha Y.:
wait.. what?
I think you meant "Why?"
i have so many questions

Getting a prolonged hourglass mouse pointer while on AOL, praying nothing happens....then "Goodbye". :hot:

Wow, it's still around.http://www.lycos.com/
Hotbot and Dogpile were the Googles of their day.
Metacrawler made me just about wet myself.Made my own website on Angelfire that was truly horrendous as a freshman in college. Was so proud that I immediately called my parents and gave them the address to check it out. They called me back 15 minutes later totally horrified and couldn't figure out why I made and "adult" dating site.It took us a bit to figure out that they had mistyped Angelfire as Anglefire and it autodirected to some porn site. Took a while to convince them that it was their mistake.

Yeah, HOTBOT was teh #### back in the day. Last search engine I used before switching to Google.EDIT: I mean, look at this bad boy circa 1997. You could search for words, phrases, webpage titles, people, URLs, or use Boolean logic. You could search by dates and/or location of the host. AND you could specify just images, video, audio, or Flash files. It was years before Google caught up to this kind of functionality. If not for Google's better PageRank algorithm, it may never have beaten HotBot.

I remember not understanding how an 'e' mail got from my buddy's computer to someone else across the country.

:mindblown:

how about going to newsgroups just to try to download a hot pic?... any hot pic... all you have is the title and you spend 10mins downloading it just to see it.

Pfft...rookie. All you had to do was ask them to send you a picture. I met soooooooo many hot chicks on AOL chat.
The worst is when you would do that, and it was a well known adult star. The sender in this case is obviously not who they purport to be, and/or is oblivious to this, and you proceed to click X now that you know the truth. :bag:

What's the capital of Iceland? ####, man, let me hit up Alta Vista right quick.
Can I find Alta Vista on Infoseek or World Wide Web Worm?
My linkBabelfish, still around, but converted to the Yahoo! dark side. Got me through high school French, until I got a little cavalier and got called out "because we are a year away from learning the grammar for anything you just handed in." Still remember that.

Are you still in contact with Bubba?

...And it came in ten parts that had to be joined before you ran the binary decoder...

Not since about 2006. He is seriously MIA. He lived in Alaska, IIRC. Maybe he fell through the ice.

I still remember the first time I heard about Google on that Leo Laporte show with the hot chick and the kinda funny guy. Amazing what Google became.

Spent a lot of time on dejanews.com back in the day.

Another vote for AltaVista; loved HotBot.

IE3 - worst thing ever!

Watching images come into focus, layer by layer.

The Netscape mail icon. 0.01% of screen real estate never meant more.

Paying $2,000+ for a PC with a dial-up modem :bag:

Did anyone else used to read Alan Sepinwall's NYPD Blue reviews at alt.tv.nypd-blue? :bag:

He went from doing that for free to being one of the premier TV reviewers in the industry.

My BIL is a computer whiz, and he helped me pick out and set up my first computer. Probably 1994-ish.

So we are all ready to roll, we fire it up and get online. I had NO clue what I was doing.

The ensuing conversation:

BIL: "Okay, what do you want to learn first?"

ME: "Show me how to find naked chicks."

BIL: "THAT's why you bought a computer?"

ME:

Incidentally, I became the best ever at finding naked chicks.

Can't find the video, but reminds me of the Seinfeld Serenity Now episode where they're trying to sell computers. "...they've got porn on them!"

Back in the day, you dialed into the Cleveland FreeNet, which was the state of the art free internet service. Didn't have to pay PRODIGY or AOL to get free email. They basically converted an old gopher service into a public portal.

The trick was someone built a backdoor in at the university of Maricopa, Maricopa county, Arizona. You could browse many university departments across the country, one of the being Maricopa. Tunnel down a few directories into this folder named "oldstuff" and someone left an innocent sounding program called HostLooker. Run that and its a TELNET program you can use in the gopher system. That allowed you to go anywhere you wanted to go. So you had full internet access for free!

Also, I'd go to the local libraries around Cleveland and go to the old file system on the green terminals. All you had to do was hit CTRL-] and it would break you out of the file system and drop you into the shell, from which you can telnet anywhere you wanted to go. I could access various accounts, or play MUDs on the file system at the library. I must've showed around 100 kids in Ohio how to do it. Eventually, every green terminal was occupied by a kid playing a MUD because of me. Their parents must've been so proud that their studious child was always at a library.

PATRICK BOLAND!

I have a CueCat. We hacked it so that we could scan any barcode and it would automatically input the item into a database. I cataloged my entire CD collection (about 600+ at the time) in a matter of an hour. And did the same with my DVDs I had. It was a really nice device for free. We never used it for its intended purpose, though.
