The Onion's Satire Was Sacrified in the Name of Something (1 Viewer)

During a women's college basketball game, I just heard the "I believe that we will win" chant.

I remember when the Onion's sports section used to have a headline for Women's Sports/Soccer.

/drops mic, bummer

It's no longer. The Onion's layout where each individual sport was listed on their web page and it had "Women's Sports/Soccer" listed as a category.

It no longer does that. If ever there was a confluence of satire and reality, it is the Uncle Sam's Army "I believe that we will win" chant repeatedly chanted and set to a Stanford/UCONN women's basketball game.

Bummer.

eta* And they're interviewing Tara VanDerveer. Will they storm the court while wearing Ghana flags in Palo Alto?

The USMNT's chant was chanted during a women's basketball game. The category no longer exists on The Onion's Sports Page. It always used to crack me up. It was Women's Sports/Men's Soccer. Is this that hard?

It's unsubtle, but that was the satire the Onion chose.

I love this.

Yes, me and Jim11 are burning arm rubber out in the back of a Mt. Holyoke back alley right now.

Wat?

It's like you're talking to someone who's inside your brain and knows what the #### you're saying. But no one else knows.

We get that there is an Onion Women's Sports and Soccer page. We don't know how that relates to the rest of what you are talking about.

I know you guys get it by now. Chanting "I believe that we will win" is a notorious U.S.A. soccer chant.

Heard it at a women's college BB game tonight. Thought it was funny, this confluence.

Went to look at the Onion and realized that the category of Womens Sports/Soccer (sic) no longer exists. Even in the grammar, it's dismissive. Anyway, this was supposed to be fun.

Why did it die?

Okay, I get it now.

I finally understand what you were saying, but I still have no idea why

Because it struck my fancy -- like the 25 hr. taqueria my friend used to live by in D.C. He told me (I'm Polish, he's from Belarus) that in years prior we'd be throwing our tacos at each other and trying to kill each other with guns over our religions and land. These days, we just grab our cerveza and mow down accordingly.

:lmao:

I'M ON BOARD*

*with whatever we're mad about
If you could see, there's no anger. It's just that those damn Social Justice Warriors ruined a fine man's shirt and Onion categories on their sports page.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

:o :IBTL:
There really is no anger about this. I figured that using "damn" and relating it back to politics would do it.

Ummmm.......so The Onion still categorizes women's sports and soccer together. And they still categorize every story by individual sport. They just dropped being able to sort any sports at the top level. You can click on any individual story and navigate to all other stories on that topic.

This information somehow makes the original post stupider and me dumber for researching it at the same time.

Awesome. Good to know. :towelwave:

Keep explaining. I believe that we will laugh.
It's like a 25 hr. taqueria in D.C. where your Polish ### and a fellow Belarusian can eat and drink a cerveza while laughing about how you'd kill each other if not for the century and locale? And then later that year, an authentic Russian can explain how your friend isn't Russian because he's Jewish and from Belarus, really, even though they were desperately clinging to those annexed territories just a century prior

Chanting "I believe that we will win" is a notorious U.S.A. soccer chant.
This is the part that everyone (including me) was missing. But you just kept explaining the Onion thing over and over.
I have failed. Non-ironic rock kick on that one. That might have cleared it all up. I brave all threads. I've chanted "I believe..." Ah well...

:kicksrock:

Something like that.

God Bless America and womens sports.

This is where I currently am.

Now see...you've gone off the rails once again.

Come back to us, my friend...don't go back down that rabbit hole...I feel like we were so close to actually having a conversation.
