"The Revisionaries" tonight (1/28) on PBS (1 Viewer)

All we see is a 2 minute preview but it seems obvious we have a lunatic running things in education. 1. The textbook mafia thing is interesting and something I noticed on my way back thru college. The textbooks are so overpriced, granted they sell less of them than Stephen King sells horror novels but still it seems like a scam and yet nobody asks questions. 2. Forget the nut job, focus on the idea of what the kids learn from ages 5 to 18 in school. Are we really preparing them for the future in this country? Are we doing what we can? IMO all kids should get at least 2-3 solid hours a day of hands on computer time with both PCs and Apple products so they can learn. We can chop out history as painful as that is for me, if students want to read the history books they can find them in bundles in the library. I'm not sure knowing the dates of when Lincoln crossed the Potomac matters as much as the brutal reality that to survive and find decent work these days you better at least be good enough to find entry level computer work.Some other subjects that should be added would include mental health and happiness, realistic way to manage bills and a basic understanding of how money really works. We should not be learning about the Rule of 72 when we get to be the ripe old age of 40 or 50, time is precious and it is a major factor in long term investments. Warren Buffett was interviewed recently on one of the Sunday Morning shows, very basic advice but sound advice for the average American, we need to be teaching what the World's 3rd richest man is dishing out IMO. Music and the Arts must be worked back into the curriculum, it's the only path to greatness for many and we take it away from them. I doubt I could sit and watch this guy talk about dinosaurs on the Ark...just mind boggling we would accept anyone in that position to openly try and force this as an idea on folks, absurd when all scientific evidence points to much different conclusions.

My kids do spend 2 hours + a day on the computer. It's called homework.
 
Funniest show i've seen in years. These serial-killers of thought have finally convinced me that the perfectability of man is a fool's dream, as much of a hallucination as any of my hippie flashbacks. Willful stupidity is simply too much more powerful a way to be sure than is thought. How may truth or sense prevail against such a force?!. I have seen the light and I am liberated. Prayz bee 2 gAWD!!!!

Oof. History deals with quite a bit of critical thinking if taught properly.It can help explain why things are the way they are today. It is a must for an educated and informed populace.

I love history, its one of the easiest ways to predict the future. And of course the Lincoln line was a joke, everyone knows it was Thomas Jefferson leading the way, my goodness.

Just watched it. Not bad. I wish they would've delved more into the actual impact of the board's decisions rather than just following McLeroy and Dunbar around and trying to make them look simple (McLeroy) or crazy (Dunbar).

What an embarrassing hackjob of a documentary. I don't understand why they can't say that there are 2 schools of thought and that some believe evolution and some believe intelligent design. The crackpots at the Texas Freedom network act like the world is going to fall apart if evolution isn't taught in schools and what's worse they are trying to present evolution as fact. Science also believed the world was flat at one time.I remember being taught evolution in 7th grade. It was taught to me as fact that the world sprang forth from a tiny dot and the teacher never explained where the tiny dot or anything else came from. It was ridiculous coming out of her mouth. I had a hard time believing anything else she taught after that.Love Stanley Tucci as an actor, but I've lost respect for him attaching his name to this nonsense. I would expect no less from Michael Moore however.

So your point is that as a 13 yr old you knew more about science than your teacher, because she taught evolution?Do you often end up with your shoes on the wrong foot?

I also think we should stop teaching music theory in schools. It's just paint on a canvas. Seems ridiculous.
