SUPER ELITE UPPER TIER
My office has two security guards who work the door. One at a time and they rotate the days, I guess. Each day I walk past the front door about 10 times. Now, I'm not a very social person. It's not because I don't like people.... Well, I don't usually like most people, but I usually won't start up conversations with random strangers. Not meant to be offensive. That's just me.
Anyway, after about a year, I must have walked past these two guys thousands of times. One of them is black and one of them is Puerto Rican. On a couple of occasions, I would say hello to them if eye contact was made. The black guy would look away and never say anything back. But the Puerto Rican guy would say hello back. And before long, he introduced himself to me and we made idle conversation. Each time I'd see him thereafter, I'd give a wave and say, "Hey, George!" And he'd say "Hey, Sheik!" And maybe we'd mention how bad or good the weather was as we passed each other. He turned out to be a very nice guy.
Meanwhile, the black guy still ignored me. Which is cool, because black people tend to do this too me. It's almost like they can tell I have no street cred and want nothing to do with me. Whatevs, dawg. Who am I kidding? It hurts. So every so often, knowing that George and I had broken the ice, I would attempt to get the black security guard to like me, too. But no matter how I said hello, he'd just ignore me and pretend to be looking out the window.
Well, last week I pass by my good buddy, George, and say hello and he just ignores me, staring out the window. "That's odd", I thought. "Must not have heard me." But each time I passed him, the same thing. After going back to my desk, I came to the conclusion that the black guy must have had a conversation with my best friend, George, and convinced him not to talk to me. Why do the blacks hate me so much?!?
So today, I passed by George and said hello and got a little head nod. But still not much of a reaction. I couldn't just let it go. I asked him, "Did I do something wrong? Is there a reason you're not talking to me?"
He said, "Sorry", then started to tear up. "My dad passed away last week."
So, good news! He still likes me. It was just a false alarm.
