Baseball Stadium Etiquette - Standing During Game To Talk? (1 Viewer)

Is it ok to stand in the aisle and talk for 5 minutes at a baseball game blocking view for others?

offshoot question... I'm taking my family to the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (awesome name) game this weekend. We have front row seats on the the third base side between the outfield and 3rd base. Should I bring a glove? Is a 40 year old man with a glove "not cool"? Cringe as my teens would call it.
i’d bring 2 gloves. both hands. you are 40 and i think you’d look really cool.

Dude. Bring your glove is you like bringing a glove. I've always thought everyone with a glove was a beautiful picture of optimism. Be you.

Especially at 40. You're well past the age of mattering about being cool.
lol, I'm right on the cusp if I want to or not. Sure it would be nice to have if the situation arises, but the idea of carry around and wearing a glove for the whole game doesn't sound enjoyable. I know... first world problems...

On that note, one other thing I didn't expect was how strict they are on the clear bag policy. It's pretty tight at some gates.

On opening night at the Smokies game, they gave everyone a free clear tote bag which makes it easy. I just bring that to each game and put anything I might need in there

Pretty sure Segra stadium has the same clear bag policy. Almost all venues in Fayetteville do.

Shout out to minor league baseball for having such cool team names.

Woodpeckers are the Astro's single A club. They get to play their way up to the Triple A Sugar Land Space Cowboys!

This may have been said in the "traits of people thread", but people leaving their empty cups and popcorn boxes under their seat when they leave is a tell.
I am not so sure about this. This has been the norm for these type of situations for many, many years. I believe that when I was a kid we were told to do that by the stadium personnel. That was a long time ago so I may be misremembering but that was the standard. I don't think this is an indictment on the type of person you are.
when i went to games, i would always bring my own peanuts to save the $37 it costs for a bag since i don’t want FBG scrilla. under my seat at the end of the game was a sea of discarded shells. otherwise, put a garbage can next to the cup holder.

I would have one of them be that big #1 foam finger glove.

the foam hat and 2 regular gloves IMO

As an aside, is there anything better in professional sports than the names of minor league teams? Knoxville Smokies? Terrific!

Our local team is the Hillsboro Hops.....perfect! Even have a giant hop for a macot.
Saw the Akron Rubber Ducks a few years ago. :). it was Warden Norton bobblehead night and Bob Gunton was there  I enjoy minor league ball more than majors. Smaller parks. $15 tickets. Good ball.

Back to this thread. As I have seen above, it's extremely inconsiderate behavior . Not surprising as more and more people only think of themselves.

Nice nod to the Simpsons with that nickname. Probably originated before Breaking Bad.
Yeah - There was a Simpsons episode where the Springfield Isotopes are planning to move to Albuquerque. It was inspired by that. I’ve been to a handful of their games. Ballpark has some Simpsons stuff there, like statues of Homer, Bart, Marge, and Lisa on benches on the concourse that you can sit and take pictures next to.

My sons (now in their 20s) have long jokingly contested that no one over the age of 12 should ever bring a glove to a game. Not sure that is commonly accepted practice though.
Being a former ball player...and knowing how hard balls are hit....if I knew I am in a sharp foul ball area....I had my glove......because I know how to actually use it. But these days? All that netting (which is because everyone has their head down buried in there stinking phones instead of watching a game they paid for) you won't see those sharp foul balls down the lines.

I can tell you a lot people who try to barehand foul balls that are hit fairly hard....are dumb. Good way to break your hand or fingers.

There is no shame having a glove at a ball game to protect yourself and maybe even get a souvenir.

Those that say if your over 12 you should not have a glove is a bonehead mentality.

The Albuquerque Left Turns would also have been a solid nickname.

First thing - I'm not bothered at all by this. It was mainly a discussion I had with friends.

We have a new minor league baseball stadium in Knoxville, where I live. It's fantastic. The Knoxville Smokies are the AA affiliate for the Cubs and they were here for many years but 25 years ago left as the city and owners couldn't figure out a stadium. They finally got it together and built a nice stadium downtown. It's fantastic.

Was at the game today and had nice seats. Row 15 behind home plate on the aisle. During play in an inning, some people were walking up the aisle and knew the people a few rows in front of us. They stopped to say hello and stood there talking for at least 5 minutes. I didn't really care as baseball moves pretty slow and my view was blocked for maybe a batter or two. Not a big deal.

My friend that was with me grew up in Dallas and said, "When we'd go to Rangers games as a kid, they'd boo people for standing in the aisle like that and just chatting."

I didn't really care, but thought it was interesting.

It for sure is sort of a "world revolves around me" to not realize you're blocking the view of several people. But again, not a huge deal.

Mostly wondered what others thought.
Were the seated people right on the aisle? or mid-row? It doesn't excuse the offenders that stopped in the aisle, but I'm curious if the offenders needed to chat over other guests to chat with their friends.

Seated people were on the aisle too.

I agree. Some great names out there but I'm not sure if you can beat the Rocket City Trash Pandas or Amarillo Sod Poodles. If only Memphis would bring back the Fever Germs.

:lmao:

These are fantastic.

Hats:

Trash Pandas

Sod Poodles

Nice! It's a good thing my wife puts me on a fixed income for I would be buying all these hats. :)

Hillsboro Hops
It's minor league hockey, but I kinda want some Coachella Valley Firebird

Sweet! We drove by that arena this summer on our way back from AZ to OR. Should have ducked in for a hat.

There are more trash cans around in stadiums now then there were 20 years or 30 years ago. The "norm" at stadiums and movie theaters were to leave trash beneath your seat.
I'm 63 years old. I cannot remember a theater, stadium, or arena where you didn't have to walk directly past trash cans on your way out. Even as a kid, I carried my **** out to dump in the right place. Now, I certainly never tried to pick up peanut shells or popcorn that fell on the floor so maybe that makes me a huge hypocrite. But it's not like cups, wrappers, etc... are heavy. Take your stuff with you.

My in-laws in ABQ still upset that they changed the name from the Dukes.
Do you tell them they're wrong?
I like it, but not going to tell them they are wrong. I’ve got both Isotopes and Dukes shirts. Dukes was a nod to ABQ’s nickname of the Duke City and the city’s founding by the Duke of Albuquerque, and had been the name of the team since 1915. I’ve been around fans upset at changing the name of teams that could be viewed as racist/offensive; so, I can understand locals being upset at it being done purely for a marketing gimmick.

If everyone did that the cans at the top of the aisle would be too full to put anything in them (this is not an excuse - just a fact). I am not opposed to brining stuff up with me. That just wasn't the norm back in my day (I am 52). Again, not to say it is right but everyone left their discards under their seats. It was a common thing to do and wasn't thought of as being lazy or bad. We would stay seated and let the crowd disperse and there were always large groups of cleaners that came down and started sweeping and picking up everything as if that was the normal operation of things. I would always dump my trash in their bins on my out of the seats to help them out but this seemed to be the expected norm at any game I have been to.

Japanese soccer fans are known for staying after games and picking up trash at the stadiums. Seems like a nice thing to be known for culturally.

I mentioned it earlier, but my boss played minor league baseball for 9 years. He LOVED playing in Albuquerque. Was not much of a HR hitter, but in that stadium, in that air, he was smashing!

Just asked him - he said one year, their team batting average was over .300. :lmao: Great hitters' park....thin air, short grass.

Things can change and with more receptacles around it is better to take the trash with you but because of the way things used to be I don't think it's a sign of being a bad person if you leave your trash under your seat. Probably because I typically do that because that is what I was told to you in my formative years. However, you may have converted me to the point I may take my trash with me now If I can break the habit and remember to do so.

Thank you GB. That also illustrates a good point about being careful with the "tells". Obviously, I think you're a good person but had a different understanding. So it's a good lesson to be careful with the blanket judgements. Or if I'm being honest, being careful with the judgements at all. ;)

Another top level hat and name.

Space Cowboys

Alternate with the camo bill.

ugh, people with zero self awareness are one of my pet peeves. someone standing in front for more than a few seconds would get an 'excuse me' or a 'down in front'.

it's like the people at Costco who stop in the middle of the aisle to have a family powwow, forcing everyone to squeeze around them. how are some people so unaware of their surroundings?!

I'm 57 and it's the first time I've heard this. It was even part of the screened previews/instructions- take your trash with you to receptacles by the exits.

I'm not saying it's not true- just that I've never heard of that. Anybody else?

Agree with you and Gally - historically it was never encouraged to pick up your trash - that it was fine to leave it there because workers would clean it up. As I got older though, I have tried not to leave trash there to the extent possible knowing how much work it entailed cleaning up every seat in the stadium.

That's the opposite of what I said  movie theater previews encouraged us to take our trash to the receptacles by the exits when leaving. It's the first I've heard of it being the opposite, to leave it there for people to clean up after us.

Thank you GB. That also illustrates a good point about being careful with the "tells". Obviously, I think you're a good person but had a different understanding. So it's a good lesson to be careful with the blanket judgements. Or if I'm being honest, being careful with the judgements at all. ;)

My bad - reading comprehension issues. Then I agree with Gally and the two of us will play the bad Samaritans - lol.

offshoot question... I'm taking my family to the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (awesome name) game this weekend. We have front row seats on the the third base side between the outfield and 3rd base. Should I bring a glove? Is a 40 year old man with a glove "not cool"? Cringe as my teens would call it.

My wife had this happen twice in the same game down the first base line at a Cedar Rapids Kernels game. Mostly protecting the younger kids near her to both off the hands/wrist. The stadium brought her ice packs. She wore a wrist brace for several weeks afterwards. She is fairly athletic as well. We did get a coupon for a local pizza place out of it.

We can disagree but I am sure. There are big trash cans everywhere at stadiums. No one should have to tell anyone to not leave their trash on the floor.

Same with movie theaters.
There are more trash cans around in stadiums now then there were 20 years or 30 years ago. The "norm" at stadiums and movie theaters were to leave trash beneath your seat. I believe that was what the workers told you to do back in those times (if I am remembering correctly).

Things can change and with more receptacles around it is better to take the trash with you but because of the way things used to be I don't think it's a sign of being a bad person if you leave your trash under your seat. Probably because I typically do that because that is what I was told to you in my formative years. I did say I stopped doing it as I aged. All those Woodsy the Owl commercials worked on me.

Carolina Disco Turkeys - my current favorite. They're a college summer ball team. Hats.

We have a college summer ball team here called the Portland Pickles. Never been to game, but they're supposed to be a blast. Probably a little like the Savanah Bananas - though probably not as entertaining or able to pull off some of their stunts. They have Woof Wednesday where dogs are welcome. The mascot is a 7 foot tall pickle (Dillon T Pickle) who messes with the fans and other teams' players. Need to get to a game this summer.
