the STL WR situation (1 Viewer)

So we have Amendola who had 19 or so targets after Clayton went down. Understandably he was probably the default gameplan for the rest of the game. But before we all go spending our hard earned waiver money/position, shouldn't we discuss the prospect of a 5'11 183lb slot receiver being able to carry the load. Now, in PPR, he'll get his, but let's discuss the other guys in the mix.

Brandon Gibson - 6' 1" posession receiver. roto blurb

Brandon Gibson caught two passes for 34 yards in the Rams' Week 5 loss to the Lions.

Gibson started over a healthy Laurent Robinson to begin the game, though the two played about evenly due to Mark Clayton's early knee injury. Though Gibson has emerged as the better talent, he didn't appear to separate consistently against the Lions. Danny Amendola is the lone Rams receiver worth fantasy consideration heading into Week 6 against San Diego.

Laurent Robinson - 6' 2" speedster, injury prone, and basically hasn't done squat when given the opportunity. I found this roto blurb which was quite telling:

Laurent Robinson caught just one pass for 11 yards in the Rams' Week 5 blowout loss to the Lions.

The Rams have lost all three of the games in which Robinson has played, and are 2-0 with him inactive. The 25-year-old looked like a promising pickup and potential long-term starter when St. Louis traded for him in 2009, but Robinson has been a negative in the lineup. He played behind Brandon Gibson and Danny Amendola on Sunday, and should be on waiver wires in fantasy leagues.

FA WR. I'll admit I don't even know where to go here. Who is even in the mix here?

Can one of these get it together and make an impact? I just can't imagine Amendola getting huge numbers with all the coverage he'll now be getting. Is Gibson the shark move?

I've owned both and I thought Robinson could become something because he makes some great catches but somthing is missing besides being a wuss. Gibson has a better overall game but appears to either run some routes wrong or drop some easy passes. He has less upside but could be a solid possession guy. Of course, they already have that in Amendola.

I've given up on Robinson totally. I still watch Gibson.

I'm gonna go ahead and disagree with this.Nobody is going to roll coverage to Danny Amendola, as if he's Randy Moss or Andre Johnson or some WR who will beat them for six on a 9-route. He is what he is. A steady possession receiver. His YPC is fairly awful, actually. D.A. is absolute :) in PPR leagues, and he now presents value even in non-PPR formats.

I second this. The guy gets a lot of catches but to scheme against Danny Amendola??? Won't happen. On weeks where he gets a TD the guy will be dominant.

I think Gibson could be the next come out of nowhere (M. Clayton). Not sure if he can be a #1 FF WR but I think he can be a nice WR1 for the St. Louis Rams especially if Bradford starts to connect with him.

As an Amendola keeper owner, I'm somewhat biased but I've also watched a lot of Rams so far this season. Nobody is going to roll coverage to Amendola. He's strictly a slot receiver, they move him around quite a bit. If Danny had average hands, he would barely be worth rostering. But instead, he is quite literally a human ball vacuum, sucking up just about anything and everything thrown his way. If the Rams had a half-decent TE on the roster (which they don't) it would dent his value significantly. I'm not bullish on Amendola in 2011, but for the rest of this season, he is nothing but pure gold. Enjoy.

The rest of the group is a toss-up. Gibson is likely to receive the #1 treatment. But I'm certainly not convinced he has enough skill to thrive in that role. Robinson looks the part, but if I were an insurance company, he would have to be viewed as uninsurable. He is an injury waiting to happen, on every play.
