The stud RB is dead as we know it (1 Viewer)

dougy martin was an absolute failure. pathetic performance
And I think Freeman knows he is on the way out. This team stinks IMO and it is going to hurt Martins ability to live up to his draft ADP.
I was saying this all offseason about Martin. That said, I think everyone really needs to take a deep breath and take a step back from the Week 1 cliff. As of right now unless you drafted Jamaal Charles or ADP you literally drafted a dud in your first rounds. This is one of the weirder week ones in recent memory too. Lets see the weird things going on right now...

1. 4 Tight Ends not named Jimmy Graham or Rob Gronkowski had 2 TDs in their Week 1 games. 9 more had 1 TD. I can't remember the last week where there were 17 Tight End touchdowns.

2. A QB for the Raiders is the lead rusher in the NFL.

3. Terrelle Pryor and Sam Bradford, undrafted in most 1 QB 12 Team leagues outscored: Matt Ryan, Tom Brady, Tony Romo, Russell Wilson and Cam Newton who were all consensus QB1 picks.

5. Fred Jackson, a backup RB for the Bills and undrafted in most if not all leagues out scored: Doug Martin, Trent Richardson, CJ Spiller, Chris Johnson, David Wilson, Stevan Ridley , and Marshawn Lynch. All of whom were consensus first or second round picks.

6. Julian Edelman the #3/4 WR for the Patriots and undrafted in most if not all leagues outscored: Brandon Marshall, Danny Amendola, Julio Jones, Hakeem Nicks, Dez Bryant and Calvin Johnson. All who were considered by most to be Top 10 WRs.

So PLEASE everyone... f#$*ing relax. Take a deep breath and don't over-react to one of the weirdest Week 1's in recent memory.
Nice, a post with some common sense. Sad part is someone will read your post and key on the last paragraph and ask why are you so mad?
i was about to but wanted someone else to have the honor. thanks

why you so mad?

The bad thing about the topic of this post is that RB is still a required start position in any football league. Depending if you have to start one or two, the urgency to acquire RBs that have the potential to score weekly is still high because of that. In leagues that only require one RB it is totally feasable to go with one "stud" and load on receivers and flex as the RB output has been on a decline in recent years.

Unfortunately... "You mad bro?!" has become a token of internet posters who don't have an actual good rebuttal to a post with common sense.

After week 1 in 2012, a league mate and I had this exact same "sky is falling" conversation. In our league, you have to declare an offensive formation and stick with it for the entire season. We were both long-time wishbone teams (3 RB starters, 1 WR) and both of our teams had just been crushed. We were lamenting that 2012 was the year in which the wishbone officially became obsolete in our league.

16 weeks later, we played each other in the league championship.

Having played fantasy football since the 90's, I definitely agree that the running back position has dramatically changed, and is nothing like it once was. But it's just week 1. There is no reason to panic. Yet.

you mad bro??

jk... great points..

Got these guys...

David Wilson- should bounce back... be a little more concerned if they get a guy like McGahee.. but either way whoever they sign isn't going to do much week 2, so the way I see it is Wilson has a really good opportunity to redeem himself vs. the Broncos in a big game

Cam Newton- horrible play calling like always... i don't understand why they didn't have more designed runs for this guy... just piss poor.. hopefully that will change vs the Bills next week

Kenny Britt (although i am actually worried about him and have been because Locker sucks.. but they were playing the Steelers)

The problem with this theory is that week 1's bad production didn't result because of a lack of opportunity, it resulted because of a lack of production. The basic theory here is that everyone is passing now and RBs just aren't going to get enough touches. However, they did get enough touches, they just didn't produce this week. Unless you believe that Doug Martin is going to average 2.7ypc on the season, or Spiller is going to average 2.4, or Lynch 2.5, or Miller 0.3, then the lack of production with those touches isn't sustainable. As long as they're getting those touches, the production will follow.

The other issue is that many of these guys, even on a "horrible" week, actually put up pretty good fantasy numbers. Compare Martin or Charles' "bad days" to those of Megatron and Dez Bryant, typically the top two WRs off the board.

This happens every offseason. People get this romantic idea that stud players put up 100+ yards and 2+ TDs every week. That's just not the way it works, even in record breaking seasons. Even when Tomlinson went for 2300/31 he had games like 13-36 (2.8ypc) with 0 TDs. Even in Peterson's near record breaking season last year he had games like 25-86 with 0 TDs and 16-60 with 0 TDs. Take away the record breaking seasons and you see even more of them. Top RBs often have around five 100+ yard rushing games in a season, even at the peak of RB dominance in FF.

A guy like Doug Martin putting up 65/1 in a week where there's no room to run is what makes him a top pick. Because some weeks there is going to be room to run and those 24 carries are going to go for 150, while still putting up respectable numbers on the bad weeks. That's how it's always been.

My theory is that under the current CBA with its limits on padded practices, it is more difficult to get the running game up to speed early in the season. Effectively, the first few games are "practice" for running the ball. I expect yards per carry will increase over the next few weeks league-wide, hit their stride around week 4, and stay there the rest of the season.
