Seriously. And this doosh was in here crying about losing his job a few months ago.

Kicking it at the office offloading some personal files in jeans and a T shirt. My marketing department had survived 4 corporate sales, a bankruptcy, and three rounds of layoffs, however the election results seem to be the nail in the coffin. We're outsourcing all marketing at this point so I was laid off on Thursday evening. They've been very kind with the severance package so zero worries here. As my incessant presence here at FBG likely hinted at my boredom in my current job. It was as kush a gig as they come but with no more room to move up... stagnant daily routine... tis for the best. So now I'm offloading 20GB of personal files and 60GB of music onto a drive. Removing any evidence of incriminating activity.... and Enjoying one last cup of our tasty in-house starbucks java, then off to the house for a cold one. May end up bouncing some resume / job search questions off you guys since it's been over a decade since I've been in the market. Got a few solid leads lined up already. Thinking about taking the month of December off to unwind. Have never been without a job for more than 3 days since I was 16. In a way it's kinda nice.

Oh yeah.... That thread was a real tearjerker...

I recognized that sometimes companies can't afford to keep everyone employed... gubmint should take notes from the private sector's trimming of fat over the last couple years. People will pick themselves up and move on, just like I did.

I know the Senate is a different arena, but there are frequent news articles in the local paper about Senators Mary Landrieu and David Vitter filing bills. Congressmen can't do the same? Or is it that they can, but Boehner can somehow block it?

Bills are introduced all the time, but the Speaker is the only one who can call the vote.

There's actually a process called a 'petition to discharge' where any Congressman can get enough signatures on a petition to force a vote on any bill. Unfortunately it takes several weeks IIRC, so isn't an immediate option here despite the possibility that enough Republicans would sign onto the petition and bring a clean continuing resolution up for a vote.

First off I never wrote that. But second, I find it pretty astonishing that so many people who claim to care about the deficit, debt, and spending in general seem to be just fine with this situation. Which just proves to me something which I already knew anyhow: none of this is about the debt. In truth, it's not even about Obamacare. It's about sticking it to President Obama because there is a group of people in this country who hate him, blindly for the most part, and they've taken over the Republican party.

My Agency is a great old building in DC, with long, wide hallways. I'm dying to bring in some rubber balls or a scooter or something, and just tool around.

I want #### fixed. If that means the government is shut down for a month or more that sucks but we can't keep kicking the can down the road. Its extremely unfortunate that it may result in people losing their jobs. I feel that. However you shouldn't expect to be immune to layoffs/paycuts/downsizing just because you don't work in the private sector.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) took heat from his Republican colleagues Wednesday in a closed-door meeting to discuss the government shutdown, Politico reported.

At the meeting that was hosted by the Senate’s conservative Steering Committee, one GOP senator after another pressed Cruz to offer a proposal to end the shutdown, according to Politico. The junior senator from Texas reportedly had no solution nor could he explain how he would defund the Affordable Care Act – an effort led by Cruz and Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) that served as the impetus for the current shutdown.

“It was very evident to everyone in the room that Cruz doesn’t have a strategy – he never had a strategy, and could never answer a question about what the end-game was,” an unnamed senator told Politico. “I just wish the 35 House members that have bought the snake oil that was sold could witness what was witnessed today at lunch."

At one point in the meeting, Republicans pressed Cruz to tell them what he would have done had the party united behind his call to filibuster a House-passed continuing resolution to keep the defunding hopes alives. Only 19 Republicans backed Cruz's attempt to block the bill.

“He kept trying to change the subject because he never could answer the question,” the anonymous senator said. “It’s pretty evident it’s never been about a strategy – it’s been about him. That’s unfortunate. I think he’s done our country a major disservice. I think he’s done Republicans a major disservice."

In other words — and this has the shock of truth — the people in the purple states weren't rigidly liberal or conservative, but rather had enough on the ball to consider the choices before them and occasionally change their minds.

People blindly following party lines never struck me as a particularly intelligent way of going about the voting process. I have a suspicion that the republicans who are just as disgusted by the shutdown as the rest of us are, are not the ones who think Obama was responsible for Hurricane Katrina.

The fact that Boehner could end this tomorrow gives me a little bit of hope.

Hopefully, when the debt limit issue creeps up, whether this current one is temporarily resolved or the two issues become one, Boehner will stand up and take control of things again, put the clean bill to a vote, make some speeches, and then we can move on.

The shutdown sucks, and real people are getting hurt, but this issue isn't recession inducing yet. Letting the debt limit issue drag on would be, without a doubt.
