The Top 164 (166) Movies of the 21st Century According to 80s and KP (13 Viewers)

Alright, now that albums are done it is time to fire up this movie countdown. Just like we did with the 90s and 80s, we each made a list of 100 movies. Our #1 picks got 100 points, and our #100 pick got 1pt. The ones that we had in common got the scores added together, and got a boost up the countdown, so the max a movie could get would be 200pts.

I am pretty sure @Ilov80s wll agree - these are our favorites, and are not really interested in the "best" or "greatest". I am sure many we will feel that way about, especially at the top of our lists, but I also seriously started with a list of about 650 titles I wrote down that I would score around 7/10 and would and did recommend to people at the stores and here.

There was a clear cut top 4 with 2 movies getting 190+ pts and 2 getting 170+ points, and trust me when I say there is a really interesting mix of movies about to be revealed in the next month or so.

Oh, there will be plenty of that.

80s and I already started making a list of titles that are not on the countdown that we are going to a ton of heat for. Mostly me because of my crappy horror and kids movies.

For a couple notes. We stopped at 2024 films so no Sinners or anything else from 2025. We figured a quarter of a century was a big enough piece to bite off. I know KP said these are our favorite. I would say for me it's a mix of favorite and what I think were the best. It kind of ebbs and flows depending. Like when we did our 90s countdown, I had Schindler's List extremely high. I wouldn't say that is a favorite of mine. I'm never bored and like "oh hey honey let's take an edible and check in on Oskar Schindler". But it also works the other way, I had Basic Instinct ranked highly. I don't think Basic Instinct is so well made and important, it's just a ton of fun and one I am happy to rewatch over and over. So it's more just a moment in time check on the 100 movies that left with me the best impression either because they were so entertaining or memorable or well made or maybe did talk about something important. Movies are part art, part entertainment and fully subjective.

That said, I welcome your insults and ribbing. There's going to be some movies people love that didn't make it.

I’ll gladly take those over 80s boring foreign language best picture nominee type films
Oh. I have 10-15 of those as well. Plus people should keep in mind who my favorite directors are.

I echo all this above. I have a mix some I will defend more aggressively as being great, some I will fully expect some WTF??s and are more personal favorites.

Here is some of my thinking as I made the list and narrowed down my huge list of movies:

Just like for the album countdown, I approached this desert island style or more accurately, I imagined building a collection of 100 movies for my house. I want to have something for any demographic and hopefully most tastes that would come over and watch a movie. In general I don't like action movies and those are replaced with a big dose of horror movies on my list. I also have a ton of more family friendly fare. I didn't run stats or code them, but on a quick scan I'd say there are 13-15 horror movies, and about 10 "family" movies with a mix of animated and live action there. Also plenty of foreign language movies - about 15 of various genres.

I place a high premium on movies that do a couple things at the same time. The running shtick of my lack of sense of humor (debating the 70s comedies) will be put to the test here, as my weird sense of humor is on full display up and down my list. Movies that can make me cry and laugh get a bump, as do movies that can scare me and make me laugh. Even the "drama" movies usually have multiple senses that crack me up or I quote. When deciding between family movies that we all do watch and love together, I was still careful to pick the ones that I like the most or that I actually watch on my own and make me laugh the most.

Probably most importantly, these are the movies that affected me the most over the last 25 years. They are the movies that generated a passion for a genre or director, or rekindled my passion for a genre I had given up on. They often have specific scenes or a visual that I can recall instantly when looking at the title. I cut any movie that I just had a vague memory of really liking, but couldn't vividly recall moments. These are mostly movies I have seen multiple times, and many are movies I do actually have on my shelf or are at the top of my wish list for buying. This will be interesting....

I wonder how many re-treads there will be….seems like Hollywood really likes to beat a dead horse anymore.
Not many. If you read our reviews and other countdowns, neither of us gravitate to the typical blockbuster fare and there aren't that many sequel or remakes in this list of 164 movies.

My genuine hope is that everybody reading can find at least 10 new movies that they also really love because of this countdown. I will try to remember to post if a movie is streaming and where it is when I put up the titles so people can hopefully check out a few they haven't seen.

I think it would also be fun to see guesses as to what people think what the top 10 might look like, or what they think will be missing.

As I told 80s, my top 10 was "weirder". I had 8/10 movies from his top 10 on my list somewhere, but he only had 3/10 from mine on his list. We also don't always agree, and we each have movies on their lists that the other really dislikes.

A clue to our 101s that I will post tonight: we have movie from a DotM director that will cause a stir for not being on, and a movie that traumatized one of us enough we can't do a rewatch.

I wonder if I've seen that many movies from this century.
Same - you can probably make up titles and I'd probably think they were real. Hopefully I'll be able to chime in on some, at least.
For sure there are going to be movies people haven't heard of. So you will have to go with it, keep an open mind and maybe find something that sounds interesting. This will be different the 80s and 90s ones because those movie were a fabric of people's lives in a way movies from the last 20 years or so haven't become. Movies kind of went like music with so much of it fractured and niche.

One of these is a movie I bet some people would have picked to finish top 10.
It’s Requiem isn’t it?
No, the scary one KP is talking about. I haven't seen it. The other movie is a big Oscar winner that used to be a favorite of mine but it's not as good as I remember. I am sure almost everyone here has seen it.

Half of the best picture winners this century are terrible.

By my quick scan, we have 6 of the 25 winners on our list.

I just looked at Rollings Stones list
Just the top 20 but it’s mostly terrible

Maybe this isn't the thread for you. Unless you are just here for the heckling and complaining. ;)
I look forward to all of Dan’s opinions of our movies. If he agrees with us on a movie, we can all high five. If he disagrees with us we can just scream CADDYSHACK 2!!!! at him

Very fair.

My common retort will be - did you see the movie you are criticizing, what are your favorites, and what didn't you like about the movie?

I don't think either of us posted it, but there are a couple cheats. A few times we grouped a franchise or sequels together. I think it's only 4, maybe 5 cases of that.

That many? This list does suck. ;)

Ok, let's do this. our 101s incoming (which is what brings to 166 movies for the countdown)

We are also thinking of ways to have other suggestions and mini lists as we get farther into the countdown. Like doc did with random lists of nearly misses.

Speak No Evil isn't even the most upsetting or gory movie I saw during this stretch. That goes to movies like The Sadness. This was one that I thought was actually really good and there certainly are scenes that stick out and a movie I have thought about since. It checks all the boxes and was one I was planning on putting somewhere in the 100-96 slot on my list. However, as I hinted it is a very rare movie that I don't intend to ever rewatch, mostly because of the kids involved and one as a stuffed animal that looks too much like the one my daughter has. If I can't rewatch a movie, I can't have it on the final list so it was one of the last ones out, but got replaced with something just as bad.

I seem to like uncomfortable scenes and situations in movies, and this movie excels at that. The basic premise is a Danish couple and Dutch couple meet on vacation, and the Dutch couple invite them to come stay at their house. They go, tensions and uncomfortableness rise, and **** hits the fan. Not recommended for all as it does get a bit gnarly at the end, but it is a good movie. I can't sign off on the American remake with McAvoy, as I thought the trailer looked bad and won't bother. A big problem with American remakes is we don't get the weird tensions and cultural dynamics that are at play in a movie like this.

I’m going to be the Blocked Punt of this thread. I won’t have seen most of these and won’t have heard of some of them. Since my son was born in 2011, the number of non-Disney/Pixar movies I have seen is very small.
My hope is maybe some of our family movies you will have seen at least, or some of those and others you will find intersting enough to try with him or for yourself in the future as you have more time for movies.
