The Top 164 (166) Movies of the 21st Century. No, not THAT Steve McQueen... (5 Viewers)

We will post a few more. 80s and I were talking and we think for the first stretch there might be a lot of "i haven't seen/heard of that one" comments. I will slow it down in a bit when we hit more that people know or as people start realizing what won't be on the countdown and the debates pick up.

I will take the heat for Jackass - I still think they are funny and I really liked the 4th one even with the new people. They are little to comforable with their nakedness at times, but there are always something in the movies that make me laugh hard and cringe. Yes, I am immature. No single entry was strong enough, which is why I pulled my one cheat card on this one and did it as the series.

I've seen and really liked Revolutionary Road, but it has been awhile. I loved Leo and Kate in that one and remember it being a bit more depressing than I was expecting going in. I haven't heard of the other one, so I am looking forward to 80s' post about that.

People probably didn't have Jackass and Martyrs on their bingo card for how they thought this would start on my end.
absolutly not. TBF, I haven't seen any of those (or Martyrs) but I remember seeing some episodes of Jackass on MTV. Didn't really have you pegged as someone that would watch that.
I like some immature, stupid comedy and I like uncomfortable cringy stuff where people are getting messed with a bit. Jackass, Impractical Jokers, and Ali G stuff is all faves of mine and in the KP household. I saw the first 3 Jackasses in the theater.

I assume they aren't that dissimilar then the show
You know what assuming does. ;) There is a reason they are at the bottom of my list. I threw a couple on that are a bit much and push it, but I for sure had vivid memories of certain scenes which was what I was going for with the list. Those are the two that are probably most out of left field for me. Most others I have talked about in the threads at some point.

The Jackass show was indeed a lot better. Knoxville as a Tennessee football player showing up at Sneaky Pete Carroll’s USC practice field will never get old. He did some crazy stuff. The movies’ opening scenes were the best part of all of them. All that craziness in slow motion, barreling towards a finite end, hurtling through space like a gotta go destructo turbonegro mission from Hades.

You are right Revolutionary Road is very depressing. I love the novel, had it ranked for @kupcho1 list and I thought Sam Mendes, Leo and Kate nailed the adaptation. Plus this was Michael Shannon's big breakout role. He could have an Oscar for this. It's very much up my alley though. I love mid century, I like people in personal crisis, infidelity, drinking problems, etc. This is in the same lane as Mad Men.

I'M NO LONGER HERE - 2PTS
I watched this last summer. As I have done the last few summers, I pick a certain theme and make an ongoing "summer festival" on it. Last year I chose Passport, movies from around the world. I had never heard of this but saw it on Netflix and said what the heck. Nobody ever seems to talk about it, it doesn't have much of a following or have gotten awards buzz or anything but I loved it. Here is what I posted last summer about it:

I'm No Longer Here (2019) Here's that isolated and disconnected kid theme again. This time the kid is an older teen and one with a lot of self confidence and sense of self. He starts the film as someone who is anything but isolated or disconneted. 17 year old Ulises is the leader of Los Terkos, a youth gang devoted to a very specific type of old fashion Mexican music: cumbia rebajada. They don't sell drugs or commit armed robberies, they fashion themselves in very unique flamboyant ways and dance. Lots of dancing. Despite living in the slums of Monterrey, Ulises loves his life. He is with his people, being his authentic self. That is until the violence of the drug cartels forces him to illegally emigrate to the US where he finds a world he has no place in and is anything but accepting of his individuality. Standouts: The performance by Juan Daniel Garcia Trevino is magnetic. The entire movie revolves around him, there is a hardly a scene he's not in and he carries the movie effortlessly. This is made even more amazing by the fact that the he wasn't an actor. He was an 18 year old high school dropout, son of a drug dealer discovered by the director while working his construction job. Also this movie can't be mentioned without saying how great the cumbia music is.

Given things in the world, I will say it only seems more relevant now. It makes a lot of powerful statements IMO without really saying them. It's not a message movie, it's not heavy handed. It's just someone’s story. It is still streaming on Netflix and I highly recommend checking it out.

You aren't wrong. I was looking for a couple curveballs to start. I do ff through some stuff like the gag inducing drinking horse semen type of stuff. I still have fun with enough of it to think it was worth grabbing them as a 4 for 1 special.

I totally agree. They were fun movies. Lots of cringing in pain along with them.

REVOLUTIONARY ROAD - 3PTS
I'm not sure if this is the one I'm thinking of, but if so I liked it.

ETA: It's not.
I would get the title confused with Road to Perdition

No, I'm thinking of a movie where a couple starts to think their new neighbors are terrorists and it has a plot twist at the end - name is escaping me, but it's close to Revolutionary Road.
Arlington Road

Good flick

Yes, thanks.

Some of the worst for me is stuff like shooting them themselves with rubber bullets or the security barricade that shoots the metal barrings. Crazy crap.

Looooove Jackass. Even John Waters loves Jackass.

RR is my wife's recurring threat when the topic of moving out fo the city comes up. Great film.

I thought No Longer Here was the dark Joachim Phoenix movie...which i liked a lot. This was one sounds fantastic- eill have to watch it.

I'm a little surprised at the scores (RT+IMDB) of the Jackass movies but at the same time not. It was a huge thing at the time so I'm sure that there were plenty of fans. It's at the tail end so at least KP realizes that it's not a masterpiece or anything.

Correct. My masterpieces start with the next two! You will love them.

Probably higher than my choice of Revolutionary Road which I think had some very mixed reviews.

I better see at least 2 Star Wars movies in this list
When there is only one half way decent one?
2 of the Top 5 best Star Wars movies arguably Top 3

I get it’s not high cinema like drinking horse cum. They’d make my list though

Maybe I’ll throw one together for comparison. Seems like a lot of effort required though

Your Star Wars movies are gonna have to come from the KP side of the ranking. That series for me when I walked out of Phantom Menace opening night.

There’s one that could/should get consideration, but I really think it’s built up a lot because the rest of the newer Star Wars movies were pretty bad in comparison.

It also has a huge nostalgia friendly ending which admittedly left me blown away upon first viewing and that helps build it up.
