The Top 164 (166) Movies of the 21st Century. A morning of legal and family dramas (13 Viewers)

I purposely put some movies that are difficult watches at the end of my list. Micheal Haneke would be another director I would put into that bucket of directors who make movies that are quite difficult hangs. Code Unknown, Cache, and The White Ribbon were 3 other movies that I had written down in the notebook of death and are movies that also pushed me. However, Amour was the one that affected me the most and gutted me. Difficult, but to me also beautiful and touching as well. A movie that had me bawling and has stuck with me since first viewing. I wanted to have at least one of his movies on here somewhere.
Such a good movie, probably top 10 all time for me.

KNEECAP - 20PTS

Irish rap group formed around the idea of rapping in their Native Irish tongue as a middle finger to the British. It’s the true story of the formation of this real rap group, starring the actual members of Kneecap. It plays out like a drug fueled gangster concert movie. Heavily Goodfellas and Trainspotting and Guy Ritchie influenced, such a good time.

EVERY WORD OF IRISH SPOKEN IS A BULLET FIRED FOR IRISH FREEDOM.

I owe a few blurbs:

The Lego Movie instantly became one of "my" movies in the house as soon as my son and I saw it in the theater. I was a movie I definitely didn't want to see and would have given a 0% chance of being good. Turns out I liked it more than my kid. It had a weird sense of humor for a movie of the genre, and it had a lot of heart with what was going on in the end. It really took me by surprise. I think I only have 5 animated movies on my list - 2 Pixar and 3 others. I love dozens of animated movies and it was a hard choice to narrow down the options. This has stuck with me from day one and for sure is one I like more than anybody in the family.

Force Majure - is a funny family drama from Swedish director Ruben Ostlund who got a lot of critical praise for Triangle of Sadness. This one is about a Swedish family vacationing in the Alps. An incident happens and the rest of the movie is about the consequences of the father's actions during said incident. Sometimes very funny and sometimes really uncomfortable a movie that has stuck with me since and I liked even more on a recent rewatch. I didn't bother with Downhill, despite liking the actors involved.

Gone Girl is another I saw in the theater and was shocked by how much it grabbed me. My wife had read the book, but didn't say a word about it. I went with her for a mini vacation when she had conferences in Colorado. One day it was raining so I went to Gone Girl. I was already a Fincher fan, so that is why I was there, but I wasn't expecting the twists and the bleakness of the couple. I also wasn't excited to see it because I don't like Affleck much as an actor, but he was perfect for this with that monotone voice and smirk during interviews. Great movie that I have seen multiple times since. For sure a 5 🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔 rating here.

Not sure we said this but no docs on our list, we limited it to narrative films. I just realized to mention that now because Kneecap sounds like a documentary but it’s not. They are telling their own formation story but it’s definitely not a doc.

We have some funny ties throughout the day tomorrow. I will be up early to watch some EPL so I will post a pair from each then a solo one from 80s before the Tottenham match. I think about 15-17 reveals throughout the weekend sounds good as it is supposed to be rainy, then by Monday we will be around 120 and @The Dreaded Marco might have his list to me. ;)

The morning trio will be:

A legal drama by a very prolific director of the 21st century
A movie I misspelled and really scared 80s by my favorite foreign language director from this time frame. A Japanese movie about a family coming together on the anniversary of a death in the family.
A European movie that was nominated for 6 Oscars within the last 5 years.

mine is a book adaptation with somebody I usually prefer behind the camera.
This is more difficult. I have a few guesses. But I'll go with Isle of Dogs.
Loving the guesses, but this is not correct. As I post, I am curious - where were you going with that guess?
Greta Gerwig voices a character in this movie and there is a related book. That was my reasoning.

Gone Girl should’ve been easy. I guess I have Gerwig on the brain today.

Keep the trivia coming!

MIDNIGHT IN PARIS
UP
RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
THE LEGO MOVIE
OPPENHEIMER

these are the only movies I've seen so far. Liked them all but I might argue that Apes is better than Lego but still good. I haven't mentally made a list like I did with the 90's but I'm a little shocked with how low this is.

This is a favorite of ours, and not just because my son loves Legos. Its humor is right in my wheelhouse.

I will take a glass half full approach to Weds' match. They do that at home vs Burnley and I will probably flip my damn couch over.

@The Dreaded Marco 's list has been received and incorporated. I will shout him out when there is crossover. He agreed with this list 38 times overall, and 13 of his movies listed are in our top 30.
He already had 4 movies on his show up on the countdown: Midnight in Paris, Blue Valentine, Y Tu Mama Tambien, and A Real Pain. The next one will be in our first trio this morning.

ERIN BROCKOVICH - 21PTS

STILL WALKING - 21PTS

I had misspelled that selection, so no - please don't watch Still Waiting, the crappy Ryan Reynolds sequel (Waiting.. is a low budget comedy I did find pretty funny though). Hirokazu Kore-eda is a director I have only encountered and fallen for within the last couple years. However, I connect with the movies strongly enough that I am comfortable saying that he is my favorite foreign language director currently working. My first encounter with him was his 1998 movie After Life, which I have recommended a few times in movie threads. The idea is that after people die they have to decide on one memory to take with them to the after life. Such a fascinating movie that hit me hard. I have watched that one a few times now. The ONLY reason this movie and one to come tomorrow are so low is not because of my actual feelings on them or their rating, more because of the rest of his movies I have only seen each once. It says a lot that I have only seen them once but they all have stuck with me enough that I couldn't imagine my movie collection of 100 movies without a couple of his movies to rewatch. The two I chose were the two that stuck out the most, but I want to rewatch them, watch the others, and then form a stronger opinion about my favorites.

As for Still Walking - it is a movie about a family coming together 12 years after an older son's death and their struggles with each other and the ramifications still lingering from that event. He is fantastic at observing the interplay between the family members and capturing the little moments between the characters. A lot of his movies are in this family drama zone, I gravitated to them the most on the initial run through of movies, but there are a couple others that are murder mysteries which were also great, so there is a variety to his movies. There are a couple of his I need to watch for the first time and then start in with rewatches and learning more about him in general. I was going to choose him for last year's DotM director for my birthday month selection, but I thought access to his movies would be limited so I went with another Japanese director instead.

He has a TV series on Netflix I see - Asura. Otherwise for those who have it, a lot of his movies are on Kanopy.

I guarantee if we did this list in a couple more years he will have at least 2-3 movies on my list and most likely higher than in the #70-80 range where they currently sit.
