Never seen the Before movies maybe I’ll give them a shot
Seventh Seal isn't my favorite of his either. It's just one of his more iconic movies. The Seventh Seal would have been a good choice for my overrated listWe probably won't sit down together and watch my Bergman box set together, either.Since I have watched Stalker, this comment doesn't have me racing to finish Solaris.I liked Stalker a little more, but they are slow meditative movies. It's the only Tarkovsky movie I've seen and well let's just say I've been in no rush see to another.I've tried watching Solaris for the last three nights. I'm an hour into it.I can't do that anymore, eitherI do think it's funny I hear people complain about 3 hours being too long to sit and watch a movie and then they tell me they binged 6 episodes of some new Netflix show in one sitting.![]()
Something about hearing German spoken backwards puts me to sleep I guess.
Might be the most boring movie ive ever seen. More boring than The Power or the Dog or that one Terrance Malick movie
Maybe Boyhood. That was a snoozer
I can't stand that it's 12+ hours of movie watching to have a deus ex machina ending. And Elijah Wood. It’s just so well made. It has another thing going against it too, I can’t stand Elijah Wood. I find him so annoying. But the movies are just so big and such incredible productions- kind of undeniable. What makes you like it then?I tend to dislike swords and dragons and magic and all that so the fact I like LOTR as much as I do is a pretty surprising to even meYou both need to do better.
its only 12 hours if you don't know how to use a remoteI can't stand that it's 12+ hours
other than the visit and drag me to hell which I haven't seen, I like all these. The Ring is legit good.
- The Ring - still the only American remake worth a watch, this one creeped my wife and me out in the theater.
- Drag Me to Hell - Sam Raimi back to form. Good humor and a couple good jump scares here
- The Others - creepy ghost story with Nicole Kidman
- The Final Girls - not the best, but a fun movie about a girl getting pulled into her mother's famous slasher movie.
- Troll Hunter - Norwegian found footage at it's finest
- Krampus - fun Christmas horror movie
- The Visit - M.Night returned to form with this found footage movie about a couple kids visiting their grandparents they've never met.
The Visit scared both my wife and me. There are creepy scenes in that one. Drag Me To Hell is more Raimi getting back to the Evil Dead days.other than the visit and drag me to hell which I haven't seen, I like all these. The Ring is legit good.

I had a feeling. I don’t mind where it is ranked here though. I watched them when they first came out, but also don’t feel the need to revisit.Dude, you aren't supposed to draw attention to that. This is what @Don Quixote was predicting!!KP gets the credit for Before Midnight but he also gets the heat for his lack of LOTR ranking.that seems kind of low
They just aren't my thing - 3hr long CGI fests in the fantasy realm are going to be a tough watch for me. I get the impression that this doesn't have the love Raiders did so I might take less heat for this one. That said, I think as we get closer to the top 30-40 and people start realizing what else is being left off in the action realm, the grumbles might come back.I had a feeling. Separately, the “Before” trilogy is great. I had not seen them until recently, but I bought the Criterion set around when you both did the Linklater Director of the Month. Really enjoyed them. More “talking” than I usually like in movies, but it did not bother me given the chemistry between the two.
My favorite horror movie of the 21st century is not on here and I thought it was PG-13. Glad I checked. It's R, so there's still a chance we see it.Since we are getting some horror, but we don't have any PG-13 horror movies on the countdown, it's mini-list time!!
My favorite PG-13/starter horror movies from the 21st century:
- The Ring - still the only American remake worth a watch, this one creeped my wife and me out in the theater.
- Drag Me to Hell - Sam Raimi back to form. Good humor and a couple good jump scares here
- The Others - creepy ghost story with Nicole Kidman

Nothing else there are some fun options if people are going to be around some younger kids that want to dip their toes into some horror movies. A few different tones and scare levels on the list.
One of the rare trilogies where I did not mind them going back a third time. I will probably re-watch the first two more and it has a different vibe than them. But it’s in line with what would expect. Ten years after the initial/renewed sparks and now dealing with the usual relationship bumps balancing work and family. Interesting to go back to the characters now that they are at that point in their relationship.Glad you liked the Before movies - what were your thoughts on Midnight?
Liking this movie is easily more egregious than not liking LOTR.#79: BARBARIAN - 58PTS

Im not overly concerned about the thumper rule in here. Hell, there are movies on our countdown that the participants dont like. I forget - why do you hate this movie so much? You don't strike me as someone who likes horror movies in general, but i know you like some like The Orphanage.Liking this movie is easily more egregious than not liking LOTR.#79: BARBARIAN - 58PTS

Don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all.I've been gone awhile.
What is the thumper rule.
A couple things really elevate the trilogy as a whole for me. The 2nd and 3rd put Hawke and Delpy in the driver's seat of their characters and they were a main part of the writing process. There is a lot of biographical touches that enter those two movies and make for some really touching and sometimes painful scenes. The other main thing is they do a great job of presenting this idealized meet up we saw in the first installment with real world application and consequences. Part 2 asks the question is it possible to idealize a day like that too much? Part 3 again extends those consequences as you grapple with what they had to give up in their other lives if they are still together 9 years later. This trilogy is a big reason I was meh on Boyhood - Linklater was already playing with time and following a couple characters over years in the movie. I was sad to see another 9 years come and go without a 4th, but I still think this is one of the best movie trilogies made in any genre. One of the rare trilogies where I did not mind them going back a third time. Again, we have rapport, so I felt comfortable using your post as an example. I took your post in the tone it was intended. I will post more about my reason for loving Barbarian so much, and even I can acknowledge the final 1/4 of the movie or so.If we could still have signature lines mine would say something like "Unless expressly indicated otherwise, none of my posts should be taken seriously." My daughter, who is very much like me, has a shirt that reads, "I don't try to be snarky. It just comes naturally.'
Anyway, regarding Barbarian...I get the horror trope of "making bad decisions under the duress of fear". That actually makes sense. But making an obviously bad decision just to set things in motion - like the main character does by not simply saying " Nnnnope!" - just doesn't work for me. And the last 1/3 of the movie goes off in a direction that radically breaks the internal logic that has been established. It felt tacked on just so the ending could be more exciting.
I like many horror movies. Not really the slasher types but suspenseful tension with violent and/or murderous intent can be great. But when things make little sense, the dots don't connect, or is gratuitous...I'm out. That's how I felt about Barbarian.
Still the movie I associate with him. I think he got me to turn on the movie a bit as well.Sorry wikkid#78: ALMOST FAMOUS - 58PTS

I don't mind the snark from you or anyone. I never take it as mean or hateful or anything. I've taught teenagers for 17 years, there is nothing any of you could do that could even remotely phase me.If we could still have signature lines mine would say something like "Unless expressly indicated otherwise, none of my posts should be taken seriously." One of my late scratches from my list. I like it a lot but not quite top 100 for me. Such a good watch though and one of my wife's favorites. She is odd. Outside of football, she doesn't care for sports with 2 big exceptions: The Olympics and sports movies. She LOVES those.#77: MONEYBALL - 59PTS

I would compare myself more to Bradley Cooper in The Hangover, just don't care enough about what a 15 year old has to say about me to be bothered.80s is the gristled vet with the 1000yd stareI don't mind the snark from you or anyone. As far as the decision to explore, she was stuck down there a bit. Smart use of the mirror and my scared butt might have even looked after a bit in case it included a way out.I liked Barbarian a lot, horror movies just rarely cross over into be movies I love so I am not sure I ranked any for this list. It's a genre I usually only watch during October and even then I tend to prefer spooky or atmosphere over genuine scares. I thought Barbarian was clever and delivered some real scares too. It genuinely surprised me with where it went. As for realism or wise decision making, I tend to be pretty forgiving with horror because I know 99% of them are going to be supernatural to begin with.
