Great show. Holds up well.

John Larroquette won the Emmy for best performance in a comedy several times in a row, and asked to be removed so others could have a chance of winning.

After Night Court, John Larroquette was on a short-lived NBC sitcom called The John Larroquette Show that apparently few people watched or remembered. But it was a grimly dark comedy that captured a mood well. I think it's re-run on one of the freevee side-channels or FAST streamers, it's worth getting into if you can find it.
Actually I have The John Larroquette Show on my list. :bag:

Never watched Watchmen or Broadchurch. The latter never interested me but I’ve been interested in watching the former. Does it stay strong throughout?
I had Watchmen ranked, so I thought it was great. better than the movie even. it was only one season, so it's a pretty easy watch. there was talk of a second season, but it's already been 6 years, so I'm not holding my breath.

I just realized I mixed this up in my head with another show that definitely has more than one season. This looks interesting, though

Watchmen was excellent. It was a rich work of art in television form just as much as the source was in comic book form.
I'm glad I gave it a chance. I had never heard of the Watchmen comic book or movie, and this TV series was said to be written and created by Damon Lindelof (who did Lost and The Leftovers) as a sequel. I wasn't sure if I'd get confused watching it since I knew nothing about the original, but figured I'd give it a try, and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was.

I see I'm the high scorer for Mrs. Maisel. I obviously love this show, from the humor to the 1950's-1960's New York setting to the Jewish American culture. You're simultaneously laughing and genuinely wanting Miriam to succeed. And this may have had the best series finale episode in history - if pressed, I would rank only one above it and that's from a show that should be a lock for the Top Ten.
I recall starting this and for some reason tapping out. I don't remember why though. I'll give it another shot.

I think that's a good guess but really depends on where you fall on it - seems like many either loved it (like I did) or hated it.

The other series that meet the criteria of being a top-10 candidate with a lauded series finale that I came up with:

  • Breaking Bed - would be my guess
  • Cheers - not sure it will manage top-10 but was a great finale
  • I'll give a shout out to one that won't be top-10 but was the best ending of a show ever - Newhart

Top score. Thought it would rank quite a bit higher by appearing on more lists, but figured I'd have it highest. If you haven't seen it, it's a surprisingly intense ride for the beautiful setting. One of my considerations for ranking anything this high was would I or have I watched it more than once. My two top rated shows are the two I've rewatched the most.
This was my biggest miss from lists.
I would have had it in the mid 30s.
Everything chaos34 says is spot on. Its really well made television.

They attempted a US remake with Tennant in the lead role as well called Gracepoint. Just didnt work anywhere near as well.

My blurb from a few weeks ago:
An entertaining take on "falling up", though that might be shortchanging the finding of courage and ambition and etc of the main character to accomplish that.

Was in consideration for me but I thought the quality really waned as it went on and I don’t think I ever even bothered watching the last season. Rachel Brosnahan is great. She’s so funny and charming and gorgeous. She ranks very very high on my list of celeb crushes.

145 - Broadchurch

Chaos34 11

I haven't rewatched Broadchurch. No need. An intricate deeply emotional and involved plot unfolds with David Tennant and Olivia Coleman giving what afaik is their best performances. That's saying something. It's the resolution of that plot that keeps you thinking and watching but once it resolves, as well done as it is, rewatching just can't provide its best feature: The emotional investment in the outcome. That may describe quite a few shows you've seen. It's just stronger here.

As some of you ranked shows because it worked for both you and your spouse. this was one of the first that worked for me and my daughter. Single dad, sole custody - we still talk about it some and laugh about how one of us getting ahead of the other was a very big problem. Good times. Good life lessons for the kid. Soundtrack as intense as the story. It led me down a continuing rabbit hole of British television shows, many on my list.
I don't get it all. Two parents know their child is in what is likely extreme danger, and they just don't care. At all. Lying to protect themselves from what could easily be a private conversation takes precedent over their kid.

That poor child with such dooshy parents.

(The cemetary was an amazing location.)

I am a sucker for historical dramas.
This show does a great job of using historical fact, mixed with legend and playing with timelines
I mean in reality Ragnar Lodbrok and Rollo as brothers is impossible. Lodbrock was dead before Rollo was even born or a child in the least.
But it sets history up well and due to Lodbrok being the father of kings, moving to the sons and in particular Ivar the Boneless is great television.
Up next. Somebody's #1 show!!!!
Pffft, Been there, done that.

I didn't remember that I had it at #1, but this show killed me. Nothing has ever made me laugh as often as Letterkenny. Great characters across the board.

Some of the running bits might have gotten stale, but others just got funnier, like Wayne and McMurray being unable to have a small-talk conversation because they had the same phrases and timing. I was an NHL superfan in the late 80s/early 90s, and they make consistent references to that era that always made me smile.

There were some things I didn't love, like the season-opening rhyming/poetry bits, which were mercifully short. Also Squirrely Dan's syntax got a little tortuous at times, though he was a hilarious character anyway.

I'm probably due for a rewatch. I was up to date, so it's only been a couple of years since the final season... but I've watched a couple of clips and it still slays me. Just watched a clip about Squirrely Dan's Relationship that I won't link, but sure enough it worked, allegedly.

It also helps if you work in a corporate environment. There's a huge business focus to the show as well as the tech focus. Probably more realistic in actually.

The interplay between aggressive sales teams and the teams that do the actual work/design and make the widgets is gold in this series. That's the first season or two, then it shifts more towards entrepreneurial concerns and silicon valley VC stuff.

I tried with Letterkenny but I didn't stick with it. I thought the teaser of of almost every episode was hilarious. Like when they were tossing the baseball around and the one guy asked them "You ever have a girl suggest that you need some attentions paid your butts holes?" or the possum in the church scene. But the side characters, especially the goth dude, just kind of made it hard to watch the rest of the episode.
