Huh, I didn't expect to be the high ranker here.

To use that NBC marketing phrase, Friends was must-see TV for me in the '90s. It was the epitome of "these people are interesting and I just want to hang out with them and see what they do." The episode where Joey-Chandler and Monica-Rachel played a quiz game hosted by Ross with the winner getting the better apartment is one of the funniest moments in TV history. Ross got Flanderized but other than that, the show was pretty consistently good over its long run. And the list of guest stars is jaw-dropping.
Rachel: Oh oh... he's a trans... a transponster!
Monica: THAT'S NOT EVEN A WORD! :hot:
"
agree. probably the best episode of the series.

"Actually, its 'Miss' Chnandler Bong"

That episode was the high point of the show, in my opinion.
Agree - probably the apex of Friends scenes.
We have a consensus. So it is written.

I prefer the episode the guys taught the girls poker.

Could you want her any more?
Who?
Dee - the sarcastic sister from What's Happening.

This one is pretty timeless. Was a force on first run, massive in syndication, and one of the greatest hits of the streaming era. Basically floated Netflix streaming for years as one of the most streamed shows.

I'm a little surprised it isn't on every list as a result. Everyone was around for it, and it was pretty ubiquitous.

"Now, I need you to be careful and efficient. And remember, if I am harsh with you, it is only because you're doing it wrong." - Monica

My wife is one part Monica Geller and another part Claire Dunphy. So...a bit particular.

But then again, I'm Frasier Crane so it kind of evens out.

Wonder how many of the friends haters are also AARP members?

For me, I'm just not a sitcom guy. Most of the time I find the jokes forced and very "safe" for lack of a better word and ultimately just not funny. Friends is only slightly better than your average sitcom for me in this regard. There are really only two comedy/sitcoms that appeal to my particular taste in humor and they have not been mentioned yet.

I wouldn't say that it's something that is always true but I do think it's somewhat likely that different generations will like what came out around the time they were kids/young adults so someone born in the 50's might think The Munsters is the best show ever or someone born in 76 might think Who's the Boss is the GOAT.

I didn't make a list, so I was not represented in any of the results. I guess I hit the trifecta on Friends. Never watched it during its broadcast run, never watched it in syndication, and never watched it streaming. There were 235 episodes, and I saw none of them.

I was in a Thursday night bowling league for years, and Friends was always broadcast at the same time. So, I missed it entirely in its initial run. When it was in syndication, I didn't feel like watching random episodes. When it came to streaming, my wife had already watched it all and wasn't going to start all over again. I never felt compelled to watch it on my home (or had the time). It doesn't strike me as something I "just have to see."

Friends was/is definitely a time and place thing. I can see why people wouldn’t like it but I was at the right age and dating my wife and then married to her during the middle of its run. One of the few shows we both loved. Absolutely loved Chandler’s sarcasm (best character on the show for me) and having 3 hot female leads didn’t hurt. I probably wouldn’t give the show a chance now in my early 50’s but it’s undeniable, IMO, that it deserves a spot this high.

And Instinctive is right about the streaming and syndication of Friends - my 21 year old daughter started watching it on Netflix years ago and loved it. My wife still will put it on Nickelodeon occasionally at night to catch a rerun.

@Scoresman - thanks for this thread and all the work. Not to cause too much more work but can you update the OP? I'm trying to figure out which shows I think are left. I have 19 shows for 18 spots and for the life of me I can't figure out which one has either already been revealed or god forbid, left out.

Wonder how many of the friends haters are also AARP members?
Lol. I am in the demographic, and I didn’t like it much. I thought it was ok and had a few laughs, but nothing I could watch a lot of. I found a couple of the main crew grating (mostly Phoebe), and unlike other shows on this list I didn't find many side characters to be that much better.

I think Late Night w/David Letterman from 82 to around 93 was innovative, fun, loose and just absolutely amazing and really enjoyable to watch. I think around the time he was passed over for the Tonight Show, to me, he seemed to become angry, bitter and spiteful and I just didn't think he was fun to watch any longer so he lost me in the 90's and this kept me from putting his show on my list.
If a show was amazing for over a decade, I can’t see leaving it off your rankings.

Well, it's because from my point of view, there were shows I liked better overall. Had he not turned into an angry a-hole, I would have put his show on my list but it didn't turn out that way.

I was in the perfect demographic for this show. Mid to late 20s navigating the single scene.
This show was THE show to watch, especially for females. So many in that era tried to replicate the friendship groups on Friends.
Coffee Shops werent as welcoming as made out in the show though.
We could all relate to one character more than another. In my case it was Ross at first and then Chnandler.
The perfect show for the perfect time, maybe went a couple of seasons too long as the actors were cashing in, but we were all invested in the characters. They did stick the landing for this show too.

There's probably something to this, though the laugh track line also matters a lot.

It’s interesting how most of us didn’t even realize there was a laugh track until there was none. Not sure which was the first one to go without it.

It’s pretty ridiculous now to think about it - playing this clip several times without any visual reinforces it.

I mentioned age of the viewers when All in the Family was 27th but regardless, there is no way in hell that Friends is a better show.
I mean age obviously plays a factor. I've seen both. All in the Family is INCREDIBLY dated. Friends has a few funny things around tech but otherwise is fairly plausible today as far as these things go.

horrible omission on my list ...just totally blanked on it = I mean, it's definitely a top 20- easy for me

@Scoresman any chance of a rundown as to who has the most or least 25 shows left?

I can confidently predict 16 of the 25 remaining.
Well, 3 of the 4 today were not in my 16. So i can confidently predict 15 of the 21 left
All 3 today were expected, so can confidently predict 12 of the 18 left. Thats pretty poor. No idea what the other 6 are
I filled out my bingo card with the 18 that I think will be on it though I'm probably very very wrong. There's one show that I don't think will be top 18 but I'm very surprised that it didn't make the top 300 (or maybe it did and I just forgot.) or maybe it is top 18 which would still be kinda wow.

21 The X-Files - I said I wasn’t much of a sci-fi tv guy but X-Files is an exception. I loved the ongoing connected story lines and the one offs. Duchnovny was great and I love Gillian Anderson. This was one of the shows Mrs. Punk and I watched regularly when we first got together. #11 on my list.

20 David Letterman - watched this every weekday and has so many memorable bits. He was just so different at that time from The Tonight Show. Although he was crusty at times, Dave seemed to be more authentic with his guests than anyone of his generation. #33 on my list.

19 Friends - #45 on my list and no way it is better than All in the Family and many other sitcoms. It became formulaic after awhile. But still, it was a very good show for that generation even though it doesn’t hold up as well as others. And it has Jennifer Aniston.

Here is another show that I have high on my list that didn't make the top whatev to be listed - "the UP Series".

The Up series of documentary films follows the lives of ten boys and four girls in England, beginning in 1964, when they were seven years old. The first film was titled Seven Up!, with later films adjusting the number in the title to match the age of the subjects at the time of filming. The documentary has had nine episodes—one every seven years—thus spanning 56 years.
The children were selected for the original programme to represent the range of socio-economic backgrounds in Britain at that time, on the assumption that each child's social class would determine their future.

It's not easy to find on streaming - unless you want to pay for Britbox, but here's a youtube landing page that has several complete episodes. Just fascinating stuff - love it.

Ozark was pretty entertaining, but a little too insane for me to rank it higher than 31.

So about the name....
The Ozark Mountains is a plateau and hilly region (not really mountains) primarily in Southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas.

I grew up and currently live in a town named Ozark, MO that is basically a suburb of Springfield. There is also an Ozark, AR (never been there, but it exists).

Then there is the Lake of the Ozarks, which is at the northern end of the Ozark Mountains. The lake is about a 2.5 hour drive from where I live and the show is based on the area around Lake of the Ozarks. It was actually filmed in Georgia because Missouri was too stupid to give them any tax benefits or preferential treatment to film it around the actual lake.

I have probably explained all of this a dozen times when people say something about me living in the same town as the show. I've been to the lake many times, but it is actually about 100 miles from here.

nope, never heard that but I am newer here than most of you.

there is also a

Ozark - Oklahoma
Ozark - Ohio
Ozark - North Carolina
Ozark - Mississippi
Ozark - Michigan
Ozark - Kentucky
Ozark - Iowa
Ozark - Illinois
Ozark - Alabama

and you are right that most of it was filmed in GA but IMDB still says that part of it was filmed in/on Bagnell Dam Strip. Though maybe they were just establishing shots or something.
