Ministry of Pain

Opener ends in a 30-10 score where Miami actually had a 3-0 lead at one point. Tannehill threw 3 interceptions and that proved costly before the 1st half. What happens if they go 2-14 and end up in the Barkley sweepstakes or some other QB. They might have gotten their QB one year too early but we'll see. Tannehill looked good in spots, just no talent around him at the skill positions right now. Not 1 WR went over the 50 yard mark.

It's going to be a long season, again. :bag: Miami is rebuilding, I've accepted that. I just hope to see progress really. In my opinion, if we're in a position to grab Barkley next year, we have to do it. With the rookie pay scale as it is, keep throwing picks at any elite QB you can draft until you get someone special and then build.

Already drafting another QB with a top 10 pick? One game into this guy's career?

We still have 15 more games to see what we have at QB before we start thinking about drafting another one. 2 of the 3 INTs were on tipped passes. Tannehill doesnt get a pass on throwing passes that get tipped, but his performance was not as bad as the numbers.

Everyone kind of knew that Tannehill's numbers would look bad this season. Greg Cosell warned us about it just last week. No matter how good he is, he cannot be expected to excel with that garbage around him. We dont have a single guy out there who can stretch the field and create seperation. With the exception of one nice play to Hartline, I didnt see anyone even close to open more than 15 yards downfield. How about we use that early pick next year to solve that problem so that we can see what we have at QB?

Much rather see them pull a Rams move and get multiple picks so that they can build around their new franchise QB.

Too bad we couldn't keep a top5 WR we already had. I know he had a bad attitude at times but maybe the coaching and the QB play had a little something to do with it. Lovie Smith is handling him just fine.

Going to be a loooooooong year. 2nd quarter yesterday was painful to watch.

Running game a Run D was OK - so we got that going for us.

I'm not down on Tannehill, I'm actually really impressed with where he's at considering the poor supporting cast around him. However, if you have the chance to grab an elite QB prospect and you're not absolutely sure the guy you have is a franchise QB, I think you do it given the new rookie pay scale. QB is the most important position, take as many shots as it takes to get right given the relatively low cost. The Rams were still saddled with Bradfords pre-rookie scale contract, so I sort of understand what they did, but if I were a Rams fan and I wasn't 100% sold on Bradford, I'd have wanted RG3 too. My post was more of a general statement about drafting a QB 2 years in a row given the new dynamics of the draft (top tier QBs are an absolute bargain now with the new rookie scale). As a Miami fan, I hope Tannehill is the real deal (I've by no means given up on him and he hasn't done anything to convince me he's not) and I hope we're not in a position to draft Barkley, but if we are and Barkley is still an elite prospect, I'd still take him.

Here's the problem my fellow Phinfans, the Dolphins don't do well with draft picks so I'm not sure more of them helps with this GM...every time we jettison another top pick or player we traded high picks for we look more and more foolish. I'm not sure if the Phins had 2 picks in all 7 rounds that they could get things turned around with Ireland and Ross.

Understood - if we wind up with a Top 3 pick I'm pretty confident Ireland will not be here to make that pick.

I'd be very surprised if they pick up anything other than a WR in the first round.

Why Richie Icognito won't be shaking that dirty player reputation anytime soon:

Antonio Smith: "A dirty player being let to play dirty … Ricky Incognito. Everything that's illegal that can be done on the football field he does it, but mainly he was hitting people after the play, sliding down on your leg grabbing your ankle and trying to twist to break your ankle and he was doing it right in front of the referees and he was still in the game."

He even looks up and sees the play is over before putting his head back down and starting twisting on the ankle, until Smith starts kicking to defend himself and make him stop.

Tickets to the game: $25 outside the stadium

Beer and a hot dog: $16

Watching the Dolphins beat the Raiders by 3 TDs and Reggie Bush having a career day...priceless.

Nice W for the Dolphins yesterday. Congrats to Coach Philbin on his first NFL victory - he got really emotional after the game.

And here come the Jets - got to think Rex will throw the kitchen sink at Tannehill next week.

Dolphins sitting at 1-3, could easily be 3-1. Big game from Tannehill this weekend. What do you guys think so far?

I love it Slap. They are not a playoff team but I feel this is the best OL/DL combination since Shula was here, that's the truth. THill is going thru some growing pains but 400 yds as a rookie? Even Marino wasn't posting those numbers in '83. 30 years later the Prodigal Son has returned. I'm just happy we look like a professional football team for once.

2 Missed FG's away from being 4-1.

Tannehill continues to improve each week.

I'm still impressed by the play on both sides of the line - Starks & Solai in the middle stuffing the run and on the Oline the right side has been a pleasant surprise - Pouncey, Martin, Jerry.

And with Thomas getting his 2nd concussion in 4 games looks like we will finally see what Lamaar Miler can do.

I can also see them re-signing Steve Slaton this week.

Rams at home this week, also honoring Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas with inductions into the Ring of Fame around the stadium.

The DL is stout! Nobody is running on them.

Big concern with Carpenter. He missed another kick this week. Granted, it was a 53 yarder, but he needs to start making some kicks, or he will have to be replaced. Very deflating when the offense puts you in position to score, and instead the defense has to come on the field and bail out the kicker in bad field position.

Aside from that, very encouraging. Jeff Ireland may buy himself another season in Miami.

Someone pinch me please.

-For years I have been wrapped up in FF and laughing at the home team. When I was in SoCal I almost forgot I was a Phinsfan I felt so disconnected to the team after marino retired. I tried to cheer on Fiedler but it wasn't the same and what a pathetic fill in Miami tried to put out there. Colts get rid of Manning but draft Luck, that's how you do it. I know Miami didn't have a chance at a type QB in the draft but at some point they did and they passed every time until they maybe reached for Tannehill. Since the start of the season I have watched every snap. I don't even like to switch over to the RedZone channel for fear of missing a play. I love this team and it feels good to root for them again. My point about the FF, for once I really don't care about my make believe teams and I think they were an escape to lessen he blow every Sunday but now all I want to do is watch the Phins. They are playing so hard and trying so hard out there, I have to tip my cap to Philbin. I still hate the GM Ireland and think he had very little to do with any of this success right now but I love the direction the team is going. I didn't like departing with Davis initially but in hindsight it looks like a terrific move and Davis has not been all that good in Indy so far.

Am I alone here? I know we are 2-3 but Carpenter could have us sitting at 4-1, and while Miami is not a playoff team, a lot of these guys are playing out of their minds. This week my wife is going to come with me to her first NFL game...I know you might think over the last 10-15 years she might have gone to one with me but she is going this week and I sort of asked her to. I never wanted her to see the Phins when they were floundering so badly. I know pretty soon that tickets are going to be snatched up and it's a perfect time to try and get season tickets for the remaining games. My wife will be decked out in pink, she loves the NFL pink fest for breast cancer awareness

I have a lot of concerns beyond this year as so many of these guys are not under contract next season, but I gotta believe they will sign a bunch of them. Jake Long and Randy Starks jump out at me as guys they need to start negotiating with. I would like to see Hartline signed but please don't break the bank on that guy. Sean Smith, Rashad Jones, Reggie Bush(not sure that they keep him) there are a lot of guys that are going to need a new contract.

I still think Tannehill has a long way to go but he has that "it" factor that hardly anyone since Marino has had on this team. I doubt he is ever a top5 QB, but I can see him being good enough in this league to be able to manage a playoff team and make some plays as well. he can hit the long one too and we have not had a long ball threat in some time. That really stretches the defenses out and makes it a lot easier for the running game to take shape. If we can get Lamar Miller moving I think the offense will really open up.

You all know I am as tough on the Dolphins as anyone but I think they deserve a lot of cheering and fist pumping right now, they deserve to have fans in the stands right now.

Interesting...

Wow. Per @JasonColeYahoo on @560WQAM, #Dolphins are potentially negotiating a deal for #Chiefs stud WR Dwayne Bowe.

Could someone please place a phone call to Carolina and see if they would like to trade DWill? Bush is gone after this season and Miami is actually committed to running the football. I would like to see him in Teal n Orange to close his career, that is all.

Miami @ Jets this week - always fun.

I've gone to this one game every year since the the 80's - mo matter what their records are this is always a good game.

Thinking the Dolphins will want some pay back this week.

Edit to add - Bills and Jets lose.

Through 7 Weeks the Patriots and Jets are just not that good. Not much seperates NE, NY & MIA IMO.

Is it just me, or is Tannehill looking pretty good? Not perfect of course, but if he had some more weapons this team could really go somewhere.

I posed this question in the Hard Knocks thread but its been buried... this seems like a more likely place for an answer:

After watching this year's season of HK, the one WR that really stood out to me as a player to watch was Rishard Matthews. He's been inactive for every game this season (I believe) despite being the most talented WR on the field in many of the Phins preseason games.

What's the homer inside scoop on Matthews? Is his shot coming next season? Is he a headcase party thug?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Watched the game with a Colts fan and hopefully it's the start of a long rivalry between Tannehill and Luck. While you can tell Luck is more seasoned at this point and better at closing out a close game, Tannehill has been coming along nicely. I still think 8-8 or 9-7 is about it for this year I really like where the Fins are going for the first time in years.

I live here, know many of the local beat writers, have met all the radio guys on 560, 790, 940AM, his name has never come up in conversation. Hartline and Bess are the starters, Gaffney and Marlon Moore are the WR3 and WR4, beyond that and we are talking 2013 Draft or FA in the off season. I only see Hartline and Bess long term but eventually they will slide into WR3 WR4 roles...Hartline is actually a FA end of season, might be gone.

Seattle comes to Miami this weekend.

QUESTION 1: Are you glad that Flynn passed on Miami in favor of Seattle leading to your team to select Tannehill?

QUESTION 2: The Seattle CBs are monsters in comparison to the smaller Miami WRs. Seattle has designed its secondary to deal with big WRs. I'm of the opinion that they don't handle the smaller more nimble guys as well. Do you think the Dolphins will be able to move the ball well against Seattle on the outside?

QUESTION 3: Do you have any questions about Seattle?

Q1-Hard to say, Flynn never got a chance really. Tannehill has a ways to go still but needs much better weapons. Q2-Seattle is flying cross country the weekend of Thanksgiving for a 1:00 game, they are gonna get rolled today ;)

Q3-Nope but I do like the QB there and Golden Tate

Any other questions Hooper?

Miami definitely had some help to get going late but they score 17 in the 4th to beat a playoff potential team in Seattle 24-21 today.

Seven wins is better than I expected, but I get the feeling the team is capable of more. Need to get more weapons for Tannehill. I'm glad the team finally has a decent QB.

What are the big FAs this offseason both coming and going? I've got to think Long is on the way out. Jennings would be a perfect fit for the Fins.

Looking like another wasted early pick. With Fasano really not the answer at TE, and Charles Clay not showing enough, looks like we will have to address this position yet again. Finley and Cook (Keller?) look like the best free agent possibilities. Eifert (ND) looks like a player, but I cannot see us using the 12 on him.Really pathetic that we keep wasting valuable picks on guys that dont even make it onto the field, and/or are cut within 1-2 years. On the flip side, its good that we recognize our (multitude of) errors, and get rid of them rather than keeping them around just due to pedigree (Pat Turner, Pat White come to mind, as well as Merling although he stuck around for a bit too long).***"The Miami Herald considers it unlikely that Dolphins TE Michael Egnew will be on the roster come Week 1 of the 2013 season.Egnew is getting ripped anonymously by his peers. "He should have been cut this year," one player told the Herald. "He's not a football player," said another. Egnew was famously ripped to shreds by OC Mike Sherman during Hard Knocks and was then inactive for the first 14 games of the season. He'll have to show well during the offseason program and camp to stick for a second season."

What makes it worse is that I'm pretty sure that pick was (or at least the result of) the first #3 we got for Brandon Marshall.

You are right. Wow. So now we are down to essentially receiving one 3rd round pick for one of the best young WRs in football, as we plan for an offseason where WR is our top priority. There must be a serious scarcity of viable GMs on the market right now.

I didn't like that pick from the start. :yucky:

I don't really like the end results of the picks we got for the Marshall trade either but calling him one of the best young WR's in the game is a bit of a stretch.5 picks in the first 3 rounds of the next draft - they really need to find some impact offensive players to help Tannehill.

I'm not too upset about the Marshall deal anymore. The Dolphins have a lot of early picks and a good cap situation. I don't see any reason not to grab one of Jennings/Wallace/Harvin AND use the 12 on a top WR.
