The Wire (1 Viewer)

finished season 2. going to wait some before doing season 3. Seems some think it's the weakest of the 5.
That's really like saying Priest Holmes was the weakest RB out of he, LaDanian Tomlinsom, Emmitt Smith, Marshall Faulk and Barry Sanders.I say go for it.
Season 2 is very different than the other seasons. But I liked it a lot. I can't really think of another cop drama I've ever seen set on the shipping docks like that.
It's my favorite season. Not a popular opinion around here.
I think season 2 is fantastic.

So hard to believe that this show got canned early due to lack of viewership... Ridiculous. ;)
I heard Simon only wanted it to be 5 seasons. He said in interviews that he didn't want to water it down. Who knows. Maybe he's just BSing but he doesn't seem to be the type to do that.

Season 2 really grew on me. It's like fine wine. I thought it was decent at first. Now it's my 2nd favorite season. Season 4 still eclipses everything.

They should mesh a Wire/Oz theme and follow Ziggy Sobotka while he's in prison.

My Life Needs New Episodes

The problem, when you watch too much TV — especially when it’s very powerful TV — is that you can start to live in the program. Stephanie was the first of us to admit she was dreaming about “The Wire” at night, but my husband was the first to turn into a branded zombie. He started talking like one of the show’s drug dealers (or was it a cop?).

“Yo, B.,” he yelled across the street one day as Bruce pulled up to the curb. “Wassup?”

“It’s all in the game,” Bruce called back.
Oh, indeed.

Just wrapped this show up. Since the NFL season ended, I watched all five seasons. Took my time, too, sometimes watching the same episode a second or third time before moving on. I'm having a hard time picking which season I liked best. Seasons 3 and 4 seem to standout to me as they took it to another level.

I also bothered the heck out of my wife, dropping the occasional, "Yo, B".. or "ya heard?". It's such a well written, authentic show and I'm now looking to buy the whole set. It's one of the few TV shows that I would buy and actually watch. Oz is another.

yep, the only series I actually felt worthy to own on DVD. The rest I DL for free. Best Buy had the series for $89 during Xmas. The prices are back to normal but I'd be on the lookout for closeouts during traditional sales.

Wow, I would've jumped on that in a heartbeat.I've never seen the entire season in a set, but everywhere I've looked, each season is $60. Worth it, but pretty spendy for a 12-13 episode season.

Anybody ever bought anything from dvdsetshop4u.com? These prices are crazy low.

You can dl the entire series on mininova.org or piratebay.org but I wanted the box set w/ proper sound and quality. I also wanted to give back to the creators/actors/writers of that show. They didn't get nearly the recognition they deserved from the award shows/critics so any bit of revenue I can add to their bank accounts is the least I can do.

likely a bootleg. Do it yourself for much cheaper.

He had actually planned to bring the growing Hispanic influence on the city into the sixth season, but they scraped the idea when HBO refused to even pick up a full season five. Three episodes that were originally planned to air, hit the cutting room floor. That's part of the reason why the newsroom seemed so rushed, compared to the rest of the institutions portrayed in the series. They had planned to introduce the new characters over the span of the final two seasons. Instead, they had to cram them into a shortened season five. If Simon didn't have such a gripe against print media, I believe he would have killed the storyline all together and better a greater focus on the more (series) relevant characters in the final season.

That makes sense. It's still quite irksome how all the so called critics just ignored this show. It reminds me a lot of Breaking Bad. If you're not watching that on AMC, do yourself a favor and catch up on the first 2 seasons. Don't sleep. It's the cousin of death.

i think most critics were enamored of the show. it somehow managed to only get nominated for two emmy awards - writing, of course - in its run. critics and fans were in love with "the sopranos" but scant attention was directed towards this show.

Looking to get into this show but don't want to buy the discs. Anyone want to swap TV series with Six Feet Under, if not forever, just for the summer?

I have the complete set that I bought new from Best Buy a few months ago. I watched it once and will never watch it again. I was going to list it on ebay but if anyone here wants it I will sell it for $75 which includes shipping. The like-new sets on ebay seem to be selling for about $100 or so with shipping. If you want it send me a PM. YOU MUST BE ABLE TO PAY WITH PAYPAL.

I will say this show has corrupted me. I'm now a TV show pirating machine. Though really I have no ethical qualms about downloading TV shows as they were once on for broadcast for free and I just happened to miss them in the first airing. I'm not just freeloading regular movies as those are rarely on for free. Prior to this the last crap I stole was some music on morpheous or something. I just use pandora now and dispense with the PITA of housing mp3s all over.

The other thing is for the wire you can get it in HD via download (at least in the later seasons), but if you rent/buy it you are stuck with the 480p version.

So hard to believe that this show got canned early due to lack of viewership... Ridiculous. :fishing:
what's really sad is that the best TV season of all time (Wire Season 4) was almost not to be due to HBO's reluctance not to renew the series . . .
This really speaks to HBO's current predicament. The Wire are Deadwood two of the finest shows ever made for television. But HBO scrapped them both despite overwhelming praise. Meanwhile, sub-par, less expensive efforts like True Blood and John From Cincinatti get greenlighted. HBO still has Entourage and Curb Your Enthusiasm. But those shows are leftover from HBO's golden age. The network is making some bad creative decisions right now.

they are doing well with comedies at the moment but are still looking for a hit drama to try and replace what they lost in Sopranos, Wire, Six Feet Under, etc.Flight of the Conchords and Eastbound and Down were both successful.

Big fan of True Blood. Great show. John From Cinci was toilet. I watched two eps and gave up.

Milch brought that show to life following Deadwood. You would to expect, given the pedigree, that they would support it.

I want to like True Blood. But I don't think it's up to par with HBO's other shows. I think In Treatment is even better.

Well, John From Cincinatti was very ambitious - so I'd like to give HBO credit for even airing an entire season. But the fact is that the vastly superior Deadwood was canceled because it was too expensive.

I'm thinking of watching this show but I have a few questions before I get into it.

1. How depressing are the storylines? While shows such as Six Feet Under and Rescue Me are well made, the storylines were a little too depressing for my taste. How does this compare?

2. The Shield or The Wire?

I don't think The Wire is really depressing. The people who get hurt are either in the game or junkies, and that's all part of the game. I suppose the depressing part is the kids who have few choices but to get in the game. The Shield and The Wire are 1a. and 1b. as my favorite shows of all time. They are very different. The Wire is an important, realistic and thought-provoking story that really shines when looking at the series as a whole. The Shield has some outlandish story lines but has some of the most explosive, knock-you-on-your-butt moments in television history. You find yourself on the edge of your seat watching some episodes of The Shield. Both shows have amazing acting and are like nothing ever before or since.

Same here. I miss Flight of the Conchords and Curb Your Enthusiasm. But otherwise, there isn't much draw for me there.

I assume the show gets a lot better after season 1. I finally got around to watching it and while it's pretty good I haven't been blown away so far.

I paid for it then. That show didn't hit my radar. What's the problem? I suppose DVRs should be illegal since you shouldn't be able to watch shows at a later date.

I am five episodes into the Shield now. I am really surprised some folks think that was the better show. Maybe it will get better but right now I have to say it does not belong in the same conversation as the Wire. The Shield is like a hokey cartoon compared to the Wire. I am hoping it will pick up. I also hope they lose some of the man on man loving.

 :

I recently finished Season 5, which was pretty much a disgrace to the franchise from beginning to end.

I would have been happy with the first three seasons. I thought season 4 was decent, but unremarkable.

But man, those first two seasons ... damn near perfection.

Uh, Season 4 was the best in the series. Season 5 was no disgrace. The ending was amazing. The storyline with the media and the depleting of its watch-dog duties with constant budget cuts is having as big an effect on this world as the drug trade, and is an important story to tell.

I was also very disappointed with Season 5 (loved the paper storyline but didn't buy the serial killer stuff), but I thought Season 4 was very good. I think I did prefer the earlier seasons also though.

season five is the weakest of them all. most people would agree, i think. season 4 is really superb. the storyline with the kids and the schools is very strong.

I can see what they were doing, but I think in their desire to explore the roots of the problem, they ended up with a world that was too big for the show. Also, with child actors comes bad acting. And no matter how hard I try to ignore it, it annoys me.Season 4 also struck me as preachier than previous seasons. The problem started in Season 3 with Hamsterdam and spread out from there. I was still able to enjoy 3 and 4, but I longed for the straight(er) storytelling from the first two seasons—the only seasons I've had any desire to watch more than once.

Still getting through this show. I loved S1, but just finished S2 and...well I thought it was pretty lame.
don't worry - Seasons 3 and 4 (especially 4) will make up for #2 . . . I can't say enough about season 4 of the Wire - it's outstanding on nunerous levels . . .

I like the part where the guy takes the poor black kids to a fancy restaurant as an award for good behavior and instead of liking it, the kids are uncomfortable with the atmosphere and barely even eat the food. And then they ask to go to McDonald's!

great scene - but then again, there were scores and scores of great scenes in that season . . .
