The Wire (1 Viewer)

Had a giggle a couple of weeks ago when I was in Santa Monica for business and went down to third street (I think) down near the beach for some dinner and there was a street performer that was performing an acoustic version of "Way Down in the Hole". I stood, listened and tipped. It wasn't bad. I really did LOL when he yelled "OMAR COMIN' YO!" at the end of the song

Never knew until this morning that Steve Earle, who sang the Season 5 version of the theme song, also played Waylon (Bubb's sponsor) in the show.
Waylon was the 2nd worst character on that show, behind Ziggy.
Waylon >>>>> Cutty >>>>>>>>>>>>> Ziggy

took me a long time but I'm watching the series. Just finished Season 3. I watched that season in about 3 days total..

So far I think Season 3 has been my favorite but 2 was pretty good too. Can't wait to get through the final 2. Very upset I missed this the first go around.

You're in for a treat re: Season 4.

It's not like he was a major character or anything. The guy was there to help Bubbs and to show there are good people despite all the f-ups that are the politicians.

I wasn't a big Ziggy fan either, but he did fit the season. That second season really is a show on it's own.
at first, ziggy bugged me but he really did fit the season. i didn't much care for his shtick on "generation kill" though. i like S2 a lot. it has a different vibe to it though. it sort of shows what the show could have been had they decided not to return to the corners. more like the carcetti storyline in some ways than "hamsterdam".

I don't get the hate for Cutty at all. I also liked Waylon.I'm not a big fan of Herc.
Herc was a "less is more" kind of character for me. he was overused, i thought. i liked cutty and thought his storyline was definitely worth exploring further.ETA- anyone given simon's "homicide" a go? i'm sure it's not nearly as good as "wire" but it might be fun nonetheless.

I watched the first season or so on netflix. great cast, but I just didn't really find it all that interesting and couldn't get into it. felt much more like a typical detective show with most storylines contained in a single episode.

this is what i was afraid of. i was hoping to have a new obsession on netflix. it has a solid bunch of character actors and simon's the showrunner but if it lacks the depth of a "wire" then i'm not going to bother.

I always thought Cutty was the most underused. Brother M as well for that matter.
Mouzone was a fascinating character, but I don't know what else they could have done with him given that he was an out-of-towner.
I haven't finished this yet (currently working on Season 5 on 101), but Mouzone seems to be the most cartoonish character of the series to me. Worse than Ziggy.

I have been busting my brain trying to think what character from The Wire is now on Friday Night Lights. Is he Wallace?

favorite Wire character was Bodie. I was always hoping he'd find a way out...
Loved Bodie. To me, Bodie exemplifies this series. Yes, he's a criminal. But in a place where morality is a relative term, Bodie was one of the only characters that actually lived his creed.
exactly. through all the turmoil and change, you could always be sure of one thing...Bodie would be on his corner.

Yes. And I know this is twisted logic, but you could argue that Bodie was the most honorable character in the show.

I don't see it as twisted at all. Bodie and Omar are characters who maintain their code throughout the entire series, even though they probably suspect that it will have negative consequences.

:thumbup:I only meant twisted because those that think in terms of black and white would see Bodie simply as a criminal. But as we know, The Wire didn't paint with black and white colors, it painted with shades of gray.

  Hence the brilliance. Another of my favorite aspects of the show is the characters who face death with the most dignity and serenity, as if they're totally at peace with their makers as they envisioned them, are all of whom are "evil" in society's view, but all of whom lived by their own code which allowed them to be at peace even when they thought their end was near.

This is an excellent observation.

1) Yes, Rawls is the Home Depot voice

2) Herc is pretty annoying, but once you realize that he is an idiot, he is much more bearable. Liked his storyline as the mayor's driver.

3) Intelligence is streaming on Netflix. Watched most of the first ep earlier tonight. First 15 mins felt like the worst crap I've ever seen, but then it seemed to get better and more interesting. Has potential.

4) I thought that Homicide was awesome when it was first on. Watched it all the time in high school. Went back to watch it recently, and just wasn't feeling it. I think that it was really gritty and raw for the time, but now feels dated.

5) You gonna look out for me, Seargent Carver?!!

Wasn't snoop the distraction while that new guy walked out of the alley and snuck up on Bodie?

Great scene when Valcheck explains to him how to play the fact he caught the mayor screwing around. My link
no doubt.Valcheck is probably the most underrated character on the show.
I like how they stitched a bunch of scenes together to make a mini-movie. Well done, YouTube.

Cutty was awesome. I wouldve preferred he stuck with the streets once he got out, but still enjoyed his character nonetheless

Didnt like Bodie at all when I first started watching (Season 1), but he became 1 of my 5 favorite characters of the show. Certainly the only character that is 1 of my favorites that I didnt like initially.

One of the best things about the show to me is how I went from hating Bodie after what happened to Wallace in season 1 to rooting for him in season 4. The amazing part is that Bodie didn't change. The character stayed the same and my viewpoint slowly changed if that makes sense.
