The Wire (1 Viewer)

about 3 episodes into season 5 and its been by far one of my favorite shows ever. Am I the only one that did not realize Snoops was a girl for almost an entire season?
Haha. Nope. Me and the gf argued about that for a long time. Have you read about the actress that played Snoop? Not much acting going on.
Yeah I looked her up the other night, was just arrested (again) this summer. I wonder if she talks like that for real. I go back to the scene where she bought the nail gun and there is no way you could convince me that was a girl in that scene.
Yeah she does. There are a few interviews with her on youtube.

After buying the box set on Amazon 2 years ago for about $40, the wife and I FINALLY started watching last night. We stopped right after they killed Omar's boytoy in season 1. Already hooked after 4 episodes.

wish I could watch it again for the first time.Although the second time is almost as good.

I like re-watching episodes to try and pick out the "locals" that they hired to play the it parts. You can hear it in the authenticity of their accents (and lack of acting ability).

The movie Red Tails that is coming out has Andre "Bubbles" Royo, Tristan "Micheal Lee" Wilds, and Michael B. "Wallace" Jordan on it.

Mayor Clarence Royce makes an appearance as Don Cheadle's father, and the supportive grandfather of a cross-dressing "transsexual" child in House of Lies, a new SHO series.

"Hey... McNutty."

:lmao:
One of the best characters ever developed in any medium. Omar seems to be the favorite of the masses, but Bubbles was the best character on the show.
Bubbles was great, the one guy you really rooted for.I think Omar became a favorite in part with the whole being gay thing. It was like, there's this bad ### with a shotgun who robs drug dealers and... wait.. what?

:penalty: Not that I disliked Bubbs, but c'mon man!
The Wire, more than almost any show in history, had perhaps the largest collection of great characters ever seen. So it's not easy for me to pick a favorite. But I can see Apple Jack's point. Bubbles was a microcosm for the series: flawed, victimized, gentle, and human to his core. I can't think of any character I've ever rooted this hard for.

Yeah, the Bunk is up there. He was my first favorite. SEeing a black man sing the Pogues was a life-altering experience for me. And then the pink bath robe scene where he passed out in the bathroom trying to burn the evidence. That might have been the high water mark for human civilization.

The Dookie scenes tonight were unnecessary. They should have just left it like they did last week with him walking towards the guy shooting up in the junkyard. They could have used the extra time on Garcetti. He should have had a scene with an inkling of self-loathe.
I disagree to an extent. While I agree that we knew enough to infer Dukie's fate the second he got out of Michael's truck, I was still glad to see his scene with Prez. Because it really completed Prez' story. Prez has come from being the clueless cop into being a public servant who is courageous enough to see his failures. I found the scene moving. Prez giving Dukie one last chance, even though he knew Dukie was likely beyond help.
Just wrapped up the whole series.I actually liked the Dookie scenes the best for the last ep.When Dookie left Michael I assumed he would end up a junkie, but thought maybe he was just going to hang around the old dude for a job.Him going to Prezbo, and then his last scene shooting up was very sad.I guess I liked it so much cause I grew up with several friends going that route.Coming to me with some crazy story about why they need $20.When Dookie went to Prezbo and hit him up from a school angle, I guess it took me back home, I wanted to believe him, but I knew he was FOS.Prez did the right thing, he offered to go down and pay for the schooling, and as soon as Dookie said na' you don't have to do that, he really knew he was giving Dookie money for the 1st and last time.

Still amazed at how many great characters this show gave us.Usually great shows give you a couple to a handful of awesome characters...this show seemed to just turn great character endlessly.

I can see Bubbles being someone's #1

Quick question on Bubbs.

When Sharrod was introduced, what is he to Bubbs? Not sure if I missed it, but it seemed Bubbles held him under his wing, tried very hard to get him going the right way. Was there a back story or something that I missed that explained the strong feelings he had for him?

There is no backstory ever shown. Sharrod was simply befriended by Bubbs.

Bubbs liked to have a sidekick to school. I think it helped him feel needed. Interesting article on the "real Bubbles" who inspired the character:

http://articles.baltimoresun.com/1992-03-16/news/1992076028_1_possum-police-department-baltimore

"Was there ever someone you wouldn't give up?" the reporter asks."One guy," says Possum. "My man Shad.""What happened to him?""I gave him up," says Possum.
:lmao:Good article.
Awesome."How's your finances"Did Bubbles use that line??Was just checking up on some of the actors.Bodie and I are same age, and he grew up in the same town.Small world

Same as he did with the white dude who got beat down in season 1. "You green but I'm gonna turn you brown"

Top Ten:

1. Lester (nobody's favorite is Lester, but easily the smartest cat on the show IMO. Loved listening to him break #### down and make moves against politicians and guys on the street)

2. Omar (second smartest character, and anybody who says he wasn't the most captivating whenever he was on the screen is lying. Can't imagine anybody not looking forward to seeing Omar and grinning when they did every week.)

3. McNulty (seems like too obvious of a pick so probably not a popular pick, but he was funny and pissy and noble and a scoundrel all at the same time, and I rooted for him from start to finish)

4. Bunk (hilarious and the best chemistry of any two characters was between Bunk and McNulty)

5. Michael (third smartest character. I rooted for McNulty and Michael both more than Bubbles, even though Bubs was obviously a more tortured and good-natured person)

6. Bodie (total badass. Had the most epic end of anybody. The respect between McNulty and Bodie is one of the things I remember most from the entire show.)

7. String (an overwhelming, awesome character who should be higher)

8. Bubbles (probably the best performance by any actor who appeared. Tons of layers, roller-coaster story arc, the most heart-warming conclusion for any character.)

9. Marlo (can't really think of anybody in any other show that was portrayed so realistically ruthless)

10. Gus (only got one season of work and in the weakest arc, but I liked him and rooted for him)

The character that was one of the most heartbreaking IMO was Dukie. To me, it was unfair to see spoiled brat Namond get a chance with a real family over Dukie. But that's what made the show great. A lot of characters that you didn't want to see win did, and the one's you wanted to see win didn't, like Marlo winning over Omar, the Greeks winning over everyone, etc.

Some faves of mine that aren't the usual ones:

Slim Charles: "The game is the same. It just got more fierce". Great character.

Prop Joe: Slimy dude, but had a great few lines using different accents while on a pay phone.

The Sobatka's and the Dock guys: Awesome collection there. The Ziggy vs. Maui scene is classic.

Jay Lansdman: "#### you Fatman!" Loved his reading material too.

Too many to count. Even the guy who Nicky Sobotka had to remind was "White" while negotiating his "package" was a bit of icing on a whole huge cake.

ETA: I sometimes think to myself "Malaca" (or however it's spelled) when I see a Ziggy type in real life.

Still hard to watch the scene where Wallace gets popped. :(
Yeah I caught that again last week or so. Really liked his character. He just wasn't strong enough for what he was involved in.
Nor was D'Angelo. Nor was Namond. In all three cases, Wallace included, it was a matter of being forced into something they weren't cut out for via their family, if you count Wallace's crew as his family. And I think having D'Angelo and Namond both being pushed/encouraged by women to get into the game really underlines the moral degradation that the drug game has on the family unit. It didn't work out well for two, and Namond was likely headed for a bad end but for Bunny.I like the Top 10, but I don't think of Bodie as a "total badass" the way I think of Wee-Bay or Marlo. Marlo was a sociopath, and Wee-Bay was so inured to violence that he gave up multiple murders while eating his dinner. Bodie (and Poot) seemed like guys who were tough enough for the game, but had they grown up in better circumstances or if they'd been thrown a proverbial rope, would've been productive citizens. Someone like Marlo just seems completely irredeemable, socially.Top 10 in no particular order:1) Bunk2) Lester3) Marlo4) Prop Joe5) Colvin6) Michael7) Bubbles8) Levy9) McNutty10) SobotkaAs much as he was deplored and as enraging as he was, Ziggy was a great tragic character. I can't think of a more epic ####-up in TV history.Really, everyone on this show was awesome. Except for Walon.

Prezbo is a great character. So is Valchek.
I liked bumbling cop Prez better than school teacher Prez. Not a fan of the school scenes in general, but they were still a million times better than the scenes at the newspaper plant.
I thought the newspaper stuff was really heavy-handed. News organizations are getting sanitized, real reporting is dying, we're all worse off for it as corporations squeeze profits from media companies, blah blah blah. But the scene where Omar's death is reported and he's just another schmoe (to them) was brilliant.
