I have no problem with Season 2. Probably some of the best acting in the entire series...Chris Bauer, Pablo Schrieber, James Ransone were all exceptional. Although I did think the Brother Mouzone character was pretty weak.

Season 2 is underrated. Not my favorite, but not as bad as people say it is.I think 5 was the "worst." A bit heavy-handed, IMO.
I'm about 3 or 4 episodes into S5 (McNutty just told Freamon about his serial killer scam) and I agree that it seems that the quality has dropped some.
They had to cut down the number of episodes, so I think a lot of things got rushed as they crammed 13 episodes into 10.
Yeah, it seems like it.

P.S. What are your thoughts on Mr. Prezbo's teaching techniques? Grabbing any pointers?
He was pretty terrible at first. No classroom management, turning his back on the kids, not laying down the law right off the bat.
Have you ever washed a poor student's dirty clothing at your house, or given one a sandwich because you "packed too much"?I suspect there aren't many destitute children in the Bakersfield area, but I know that's something you would totally do.No shtick.

Oh there are plenty of poor kids here in town, just not where I teach.

I think season two is pretty much universally ranked #4 out of five seasons (with season five coming in behind it). That's not because season two was bad. It was great. It's just that seasons one, three, and four were phenomenal.
Four and two are the most common pairing I've seen at the top. Then again this is just my friends and a handful of music boards I'm basing it on. No idea how it's been received on a wider level.
4 > 3 >> 1 >> 2 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 5

Interesting that the only annoying character in the life of the show and his character's boss are played by two most accomplished people outside of the show.
Herc?
Templeton wrote and directed The Station Agent, The Visitor, and Win Win. All great. Gus has directed a bunch of stuff, including iirc the pilot of The Wire.
I did hate Templeton, but Herc and Ziggy were both very annoying. Some hated Walon too.So, I'm going to disagree that Templeton was the only annoying character in the life of the show.

Interesting background on Clark Johnson (who played Gus) from wikipedia:

Early years

Johnson was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to an African American father and a White mother. The family eventually moved to Canada.[2] He attended Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec. He has three siblings[2] including jazz singer Molly Johnson and actress and singer Taborah Johnson.

Johnson attended Eastern Michigan University on a partial athletic scholarship for football, but he was expelled after he was caught stealing turkey frankfurters from the school cafeteria.[3] He attended several other universities including Loyola and the University of Ottawa before ending up at the Ontario College of Art as a film major.[3]

Career

Johnson was drafted by the Canadian Football League, and even played short stints with the Buffalo Bills and the Pittsburgh Steelers before he decided he had "better try and get some sort of job."

Johnson started in film doing special effects, including David Cronenberg's The Dead Zone. This behind-the-scenes work often served as a "backup" for him during the early stages of his acting career.

He began performing in feature films in 1981, landing roles in the movies Killing 'em Softly, Colors, Wild Thing, Adventures in Babysitting, and Nowhere to Hide. He also acted in a number of television shows early in his career, including The Littlest Hobo, Night Heat, Hot Shots and E.N.G.

Bubbles needed a Waylon type. As a recovering junkie himself, Steve Earle knew what he was doing with that role.
I don't think people have a problem with the Waylon character. It's just that Steve Earle is a horrible actor.
Beyond abysmal. I understand the purpose that character serves, and it's a worthwhile one, but he just stunk. He stunk in Treme too.
You're the gourmet around here, Ed.

Finished the entire series today. As stated above you can really tell they had to cram a lot into the last season.

All-in-all it was a very good show. I wish I had watched it during the original run so I wasn't watching it with all of the hype floating around in my head.

Break down Bubbles for me.
Great actor, great character.
 You could feel his pain before he...

hung himself
The spoiler probably isn't necessary at this point, but I'd hate to have someone read that before seeing it.
Why he was never nominated for an Emmy is a shame.I blame McNUTTY!

I blame McNUTTY!Not even that great of an actor. Pierce and Peters outshined him. Even Harris and Elba. But not whoever played Kima. Boring character, so-so actress.

Nobody bothered to watch the show, that's why. I don't even recall any nominations, let alone wins.
