The Wire (2 Viewers)

Still hard to watch the scene where Wallace gets popped. :(
WHERE'S WALLACE!
I hated Deangelo's face
:goodposting:

He's definitely got the fish face going. Odd lookin' dude.
I think they intentionally got some unique looking cats just for the sake of crackers like me that thought Wee Bey and Stringer were the same guy for most of the first season.
It's like watching black Chinamen!

Down to the final disc of Season 3. I am finally making some progress with this show. I think I will buy Season 4 sometime this week.

Starting again with S01E01.

So friggin good.
Just started again also, now with the wife joining me. This will be my third trip, her first. I'm picking up so much more context and catching things I missed the first time.
I'd recommend putting the subtitles on. It'll help her out a lot, especially with names, and you'll pick up on a whole lot more.
:goodposting:

Also, the misspellings and malaprops in the subtitles are their own entertainment.

Haven't heard one thing about this show. Anyone?
Just saw the previews during The Killing last night. Will check it out though. Two other former David Simon cast members from The Wire and Generation Kill are also on it.

Funny to see Ransone with Generation Kill's Trombley again:

The director has done episodes of The Walking Dead, Dexter, and Luther. It's almost like a Degrees of David Simon with the director working with Idris Elba.

On paper, looks promising.

First time watching. 3 episodes in so far. Pretty good but a little slow.
Oh it picks up, trust me. There's just so many characters and storylines you get introduced to at first where it can't help but feel a little slow.
There was a good run of episodes in the latter half of season 1. But now I'm early in season 2 and struggling to continue watching.

When does it hit its peak?

IMO seasons 3 and 4 are the best. The show builds on itself, every detail and character will be important in the end. Season 2 is jarring because it seems to be a different show from season 1, but season 2 totally connects to everything else and is actually very important to explaining the state of Baltimore (which is what the show is about, it's not a cop show).

I'd rank season two behind season one (but ahead of season five), but both of the first two seasons start kind of slow. They do pick up, so stick with it.

I've gone through the series 4x now and each time through I actually like season five less and less. It's still better than almost everything else on TV, but I view it as a severe drop in quality from the other four seasons.

Season four and season one stand out the most to me with two and three just a very small step below. Season five though I just can't get behind. The serial killer storyline is so bad especially coming off the brilliance of season four. Also, I don't give a damn about any of the newspaper writers whereas I cared what happened to the teachers and the police and the dock workers.

Give up now.

Seriously.

If you're "struggling" to watch seasons 1 and 2, it might not be for you.
Yea, near the end of season one, when Sydnor (or was it Carver) says "this is the best work I've ever done, I never did a case like this before", I also thought "yea, and I never saw a show like this before".

The first three episodes of season 1 were a struggle, because it threw so many characters at you (and it is slower - much slower - than standard cop shows). But I really liked seeing the inner workings of the drug gang, so that kept me in.

Season 2 was slow for me too when i first watched it. But it sets the stage for the rest of the series. The show really hits its stride season 3. It wasnt until the second time i watched the series that i truly appreciated season 2.

This is the closest to where I stand. After Season 1 really turns it up as it goes on, I found S2 to be a bit jarring as it felt quite different from S1. I definitely appreciate S2 in retrospect but still dont think its as good as S1, 3, or 4. Quitting on show early on in S2 would be the worst time to do so, and S2 like all other seasons picks up as it goes on as well.

yep, S1 ends and it's like you're getting on the freeway about to start doing 60, S2 starts and it's like you hit bumper/bumper traffic but you're sandwiched in between swimsuit model bus in the middle of the summer

The start of season one makes a lot more sense, and for me was more enjoyable, on the second viewing. There's a lot going on that I didn't understand the first time.

Agreed. This show is actually much better the second time you watch it.
Cosign. It makes so much more sense and you pick up on the many different layers of plot they will soon be developing....i hated Season 2 initially but came to really appreciate it on 2nd/3rd viewing.

Finally getting around to watching this show. I've not read this thread to avoid spoilers. Finished season one yesterday. It was great. Hard to live up to the billing because I've been repeatedly told it was the best series in television history. So season two starts and in the first two episodes they have Avon in prison on the live visit phones between the glass discussing tons of illegal business. There. Is. Just. No. Way. Those conversations happen. Not even with dip#### criminals, let alone one as cautious as Barksdale. I've made a few of those visits and you're told the conversation is being recorded. I hope it stops, or I might regret buying the whole season. I expect someone to overreact to this criticism.

I think if you're going to do the period after every word thing you need to commit to the whole sentence. What you did there looks really weird.

Always figured the implication was that Avon had prison guys in his pocket that allowed him to speak freely on the phone. In real life, that place has always had a reputation for being comically corrupt. Google jessup.
