The Wire (1 Viewer)

Currently in re-watch mode at the tail end of season 4. Gonna give 5 a run as well, just in case it got better while I wasn't looking.
It's always a let down...

Made the trek start to finish 3x and season 5 always let's me down. I can enjoy parts of it, but the serial killer/newspaper storyline really irks me. Seeing resolution for bubbles story and what happens to the corner kids makes the season worth the viewing, but it is easily the worst of the five seasons.
I think I feel this way about every final season or every show I enjoyed. I think it goes hand in hand.
Not Breaking Bad.
I disagree. The last season (IMHO) was the worst of them all.

might be the wrongest thing I've read. pretty sure you're on an island there.
Going off of memory I think there was a decent amount of people who agreed in the BB thread. There was 2 episodes that really stood out as great but otherwise season 5 wasnt as good as the others IMO.
Actually I agree with it too. BB season 5 had great moments for sure, but subbing in the Nazis for Gus is not a net gain in any shape or form.

This is different though - season 5 of BB wasnt a step down, it's just not my favorite. Season 5 of the wire was a step down in writing and content especially compared to the brilliance of the rest of it.

I thought 5 was much better than 2.

In the minority for sure, but I thought 2 was the best of the seasons. Loved Frank. And the Greek. And Valcheck (sp?) was phenomenal.

Or The Shield.

I'm with you. I have this conversation 3x a year and every time people look at me sideways.

It was a great show from start to finish and you're all nitpicking.
Agreed. Season 5 just had too many ridiculous moments, especially the huge magnet at the police evidence depot and all of Gus's former employees getting whacked simultaneously in jail. That would be my biggest beef with it. But the moment when Hank is on the crapper and finds the book with the WW reference is one of the biggest "HOLY ####!!!" TV moments I've ever seen, and the way it's all wrapped up is about as good as they could have done IMO. Great buildup of suspense until the very end.

It's the best show ever created, but season 5 is still a step down. I'd rather watch season 5 than 99% of anything else on TV, but coming off of season 4 it's a bit of let down. Seasons 1 and 4 are brilliant in every way shape or form and 2 and 3 are just shy of the same praise. 5 is different.

Edit: I'm talking about the Wire not BB.

The best of the Wire is better than the best of BB.

or something like that (IMO)

5 isn't as bad as I thought it was during my first viewing, but it's still a disappointment.

Season 5 of The Wire is still superior to 99.99% of TV shows, it mainly suffers by comparison to the rest of the series. Even McNulty's awful storyline paid off with one of my favorite moments in the whole series when the FBI profiler reads out on the "serial killer" and it's a perfect description of McNulty.

While I was enraged at the time, I also think they resolved Omar's story the right way for the series. They could have done what Breaking Bad did and have him take out Marlowe in a blaze of glory, and/or make it back to his sunset on the beach. Nothing against BB because I think it worked for that show but I think they handled Omar the right way.

I think people aren't truly happy until they can complain about how something awesome actually sucks on some level.

I blame Officer Pete Malloy.

I think you're underrating 3. the Avon vs Stringer stuff was phenomenal in that season, and Bunny Colvin rules.

I was preparing for the worst, but didn't mind it so much. I liked the newspaper angle - really liked the actor who played the editor - and thought it was cool to see Michael become the new Omar. But it did feel rushed and I thought the McNulty angle was pretty strange.

shows that hang their hat on realism deserve some demerits when they rely on ridiculous plot devices. I guess some people disliked Hamsterdam for similar reasons, but to me that still felt much more plausible than the serial killer plot in season 5. I'm not sure how long a reporter would get away with completely making up stories like that guy too. just felt like they were running out of stories to tell by season 5.

Yeah, and that reporter got a lot of rope, too. Like he was related to the brass or something and deserved protection. Never understood how that weasel got away with that garbage.

they were pushing him for a Pulitzer award even though his editor knew he was full of crap. silly.

I dig 3, but Bodie/Wallace, Deangelo's identity crisis, and the introduction of Omar > Avon/Stringer and Bunny.

Both are phenomenal.

This is absolute crazytalk.

I started watching season 1 with the wife a few months ago. We would watch an episode or two every night but she would always fall asleep about 3/4 in. So I stopped watching so she could catch up.

Well I dropped her like Wallace and started from scratch over the weekend and I finished season 1 last night. I can't wait to start season 2 tonight.

Which season had the docks ? I've heard that season was tough to watch but I should muscle through it.
Season 2 is awesome. It's just a real shock because of how different it is from season 1 and how many new characters there are. In the end, it's just like season 1, it just takes time to realize that the Wire is painting something bigger than cops vs drug dealers.Muscle through S2 of the Wire? It's like saying, should I just suck it up and sympathy bang Bar Rafaeli?

some fans would probably murder a vagrant just to get to watch season 2 for the first time again. good luck 'muscling through' it.

Plus it showed how bad media coverage had become because the dawn of the internet was making the business people do whatever it took to make money in a dead industry.

My god, how many times will we have this conversation ranking the seasons and discussing where 2 and 5 fit?
Conversation 1 of this was pretty good; I really hadn't fully gotten into the argument yet but it was interesting to find out what people thought.

Then Conversation 2 was OK, but it was a lot of new people in the thread and didn't really build on the arguments from Conversation 1. However some people loved this new conversation and ultimately enjoyed it more than all the others.

Conversations 3 and 4 were just awesome. They really built on the first conversation, but went deeper and in unexpected new directions.

Some people really liked the 5th Conversation about this, and thought it was a great way to wrap up all the previous conversations. Others thought it went a little overboard.

I'm on record throughout this thread that S2 is my favorite. If only for Ziggy's duck.

yup.

....and I like Clarke Johnson in season 5. I wish he would take more acting roles.
Of course we're nitpicking. The show has been off the air for over six years. Anyone still talking about it at this point realized it's brilliance, but it doesn't mean it was 100% perfect (albeit as close as anything that's been put on television).

One great thing about S5 is every single scene with Bunk getting pissed at the serial killer investigation is friggin' hilarious. Love me some Bunk.

The theme song version this season is horrible though.

I liked the season 4 song the most.
Sweeeet! Now we can argue theme songs...

2 > 1 = 4 >>>>>>>>> 3 >>>>>>>>> 5

Tom Waits, yo.
