There Can Only Be One. (1 Viewer)

From Bill Simmons and Grantland.

Basically actors who took up the air space of another one.

For instance Tom Hanks v. Michael Keaton.

Hanks in the 80's had Splash, Bachelor Party, The Money Pit, Punchline and Big. Then bottomed out in the late 80's with Turner and Hooch, Joe versus the Volcano and Bonfires of the Vanities in 1990.

Keaton in the 80's was cruising with Mr. Mom, Gung-Ho, Beatlejuice then in 1989 he's Batman.

At that point Keaton's career looking promising then the 90's hit and Hanks took over. Keaton knocked out.

Michael J. Fox kind of knocked out E. Stoltz literally in Back to the Future.

Jennifer Lawrence kind of knocking out E. Stone now.

What are some other examples?

Isn't it "There can be only one"?

How about Michael Cera and Jesse Eisenberg... though neither are as big as the names you mention.

Along these lines there are actors that despite playing vastly different roles are easily confused - for some reason De Niro and Pacino are that way for me. Always have been.

woz and chase

morgan freeman and sidney poitier

barry bonds and mark mcgwire and jose canseco

michael j fox and emilio estevez

jean claude van dumb and steven seagal

Not specifically what the OP referred to, but when L.A. Confidential came out, I thought Guy Pearce would be the breakout star from it, mostly because he came across as a very good actor and the type of actor that critics would gush over, but Russell Crowe is the one who just exploded after that. Pearce has had a nice career since, but he's never been the major draw that Crowe has been.

Joe vs. the Volcano is one of my favorite movies. If you don't understand or appreciate it, you are either a spoiled suck hole or have never taken a risk in your life.

I think the most obvious one tha the hasn't hit on is Bradley cooper taking josh Lucas's career. It is easy to picture Lucas in every cooper role yet he's stuck doing voice overs for Home Depot

Right, like they are different people.

Great BS Report with Wesley Morris today. Oscar recap.

Simmons brought up Jared Leto v. Billy Crudup.

Two competing Prefontaine movies. According to Bill, Crudup one that one. Followed by Almost Famous where Leto, a musician, "lost" out to Crudup for the part. Flash-forward 10 years later and Leto is winning an Oscar and Crudup is kind of on the downside.

Does Emma Stone have a single non-comedy role on her resume? And does Jennifer Lawrence even have one comedy role on her resume? I don't think they've competed for roles at all, not that I really agree with the premise.

Lawrence was mainly playing for laughs in AH. I could definitely see Stone playing the Silver Linings part. Likely not as well. Lawrence is great but her roles to this point have not exactly been stretches that another "it" actress could not play.

I don't think Stone could play the Lawrence character in AH, and certainly not the Lawrence character in Winter's Bone. Though I agree that she could likely fill in admirably in Lawrence's Silver Linings role.

Winter's Bone? Maybe not. American Hustle? Don't think Lawrence played that part either.

I wouldn't be surprised if Will Smith aced Keanu Reeves out of a lot of roles. Both roughly the same age. Reeves was up and coming off of Speed in 1994. He could have landed the part in ID4 had Will Smith never existed. Potentially, he could have been in the Men in Black series, I Robot, and I am Legend.

Not sure who took him out but I always though Reese from terminator would go on to bigger things. Maybe Bruce Willis.
