Things Boomers Like (2 Viewers)

Pencils?

I'm an Xennial and haven't used a pencil since the 90s.
My son used to use pencils for his homework in grade school.   So now he's in high school and I haven't asked him why but he is required to have pencils for at least one of his classes.  So we have a bunch of pencils laying around and the kick ash pencil sharpener from amazon is always there to save the day.  The only pencils I own are carpenter pencils and naturally whenever I need to use one, I can't find them so I end up using sharpies.

I admit to keeping all the manuals, but whenever something breaks, the 1st thing I do is to just google the model number to get the pdf version.
Bingo same here.  I keep the manuals and save all the receipts but whenever I need a receipt I check my e-mail and whenever I need information on the appliances or whatever I do the same thing, I head straight for google or check my amazon history to see if I have the information there from a part I needed earlier.

Buying overpriced shirts from the golf course pro-shop (with the name of the course on the chest).  And then wearing them all time when nowhere near a golf course.

"Look, Craig...I know you want me to ask you about the time you played Farting Oaks or Boca del Puta but I'm not going to.  Mainly out of general principle."
I have several of these, but I got them at Gabriel's for like $5.

My friend's dad is the king of this. He will play us his voicemails and they are always something like:

"Well hello Dean, this is your father. I am calling you at 2:20...no maybe it's closer to 2:30. I'll have to check the clock- yep it is 2:29. I am having a lovely day, went to the park with with my grandson. He just loved it. Hopefully your day is going just as good as mine. You are probably at work or maybe not at work or maybe the gym or on a bike ride- what a great day for that! Anyway, I was just calling you to say hi. Nothing important do not worry. There is no rush to call me back. Oh by the way did you know someone left a fabulous little piece of tupperware at our house. It has a red top, glass container. It's maybe 8 by 12. You know what tupperware is, right? It's just great for storing leftovers in. Anyway, someone left it here. I know it wasn't you since you weren't here this weekend. But I just wanted to let you know that it was left here and your mom just doesn't know who it belongs to but it's such a nice piece of tupperware. I am going to buy some just like it. So give me a call back, my number is still 313-123-4567. If I don't answer, it may be because I am in the middle of a film. Your mom and I have started putting our phones away when we watch movies. It's so relaxing to just watch a movie with no distractions. We do pause and have an intermission where we will check just in case there is an emergency. So again, if I don't answer, leave me a message and I will return the call. Ok, nothing big going on or anything. Just was going to ask you what you think of some of recent Fox News programming. Your mom and I think they aren't treating the President fairly and we are starting to just use Youtube now for our news. They say much nicer things about him. Also there are some very funny videos on Youtube. Have you seen the funny videos there? Anyway, I will talk to you soon. Goodbye."
My mother loves the phone and talks like a diary. She doesn't believe in texting. Too impersonal. I love text. She wants to hear my voice. Um, you should know it by now... 🙄

My MIL talks on the phone all the time- usually on speaker phone and regardless of who else is around. She also likes to call my wife while she is at work for no reason and then she gets annoyed that my wife can't talk.

My parents refuse to pay bills or buy anything online due to fear of hacking. So they ask me to order online. Uh, so you're fine with my accounts getting hacked?

They stock up on stamps when prices are said to be going up. USPS likes them... 🙄

Mine didn't bother me at work, just at home. People didn't know I was on the phone because it's non stop. I'd set the phone down then pick it up and she never noticed she was talking to the air. Always cracked everyone up. And her job was sales. Where she got the energy to talk so much is beyond me.

Mortgaging future generations economic freedom so they can live the easy life.  Then complaining about how lazy millennials all want handouts and should get out of their parents basements because in their day you could drop out in 10th grade and land a good enough job to buy a car, house and support a family with a single earner.

What do I win?
Myth

I am gen x-er but we bought our home off a boomer.  He kept each and every single owner's manual in a plastic bag. . . I have maintained that tradition and I have to be honest here, I fully support that idea.  He also had TWO hand crank pencil sharpeners attached to the walls, I kept that tradition as well even though they're useless and I only use a really nice electric pencil sharpener I got off amazon.  The cell phone thing is absolutely a real thing though, I have seen this countless times!
Wow. Same here. Little workshop in the basement with every owner's manual (even the 70 year old boiler), and a hand crank pencil sharpener. I have no idea why, but I just keep adding to the manual collection. Almost seems disrepsectful not to.

Also, there are years of calculations in pencil on the wall. I eventually gave up trying to figure out what they mean, but for some reason, I really enjoy them.

Great starting list overall, though I'm not sure sure about the well done hamburgers thing. That's great to ponder tough (honestly I'm fascinated in how/why we can vary so greatly in our preference in "doneness". A lot of variables here, and I haven't found age to be much of a factor)

What does seem very accurate.......he said "hamburgers" not "cheeseburgers".  FME (selling burgers for a living), boomers quite often don't care for cheese on their burgers.

On the spicy thing, it's uncanny. I've read/heard folks saying that people like more spice as they get older because the taste buds dull, but that hasn't been my experience at all.

What does seem true is boomers care a great deal about food and coffee being a screaming hot temperature.

I think keeping manuals before 2000 was pretty common for all generations. Back when you could not "pull up" whatever you needed for your product having a manual was actually very smart.

I did buy a car off a geezer who lived by us for my daughter but he was pre-boomer. Guy was an old Ford engineer.   When I saw it for sale I jumped on it as I knew it was treated with kid gloves.   After the sale he handed me a folder with the original bill of sale and sticker.  Had every oil change with mileage and dates, when brakes were changed with mileage and date and every maintenance ever done on the vehicle. I kept up that folder out of respect and when I sold that car 5 years later passed it on to the next person.   Only time I ever logged anything on a vehicle.

Has anyone mentioned slot machines and casino buffets?

Or buffets in general I guess.

I said Applebee's, but my mind was on mediocre restaurant food void of portion control. So, yeah, that.

Boomers love picking at millenials for their dining habits, but we go out much less frequently. So, more money/experience, less experiences, better food/drink, and a thinner waistline.

Stupid boomers.

Think this belongs in the millennial thread.
Boomers would feel differently about health care costs if they were paying what we pay just to birth a child. Let alone what comes thereafter. You could replace higher ed with health care above and come to a similar conclusion too.

Cause boomers are selfish.
