Things that are inexplicably expensive (1 Viewer)

Currently in the process of planning a wedding - every bill involved in this process is unbelievably overpriced.
Examples?
Venue : $133.50 per head + 20% tip + tax = $173.21 per person * roughly 160 guests
$133 per person is the best price we found. Many others in my area were $190+

Band : $7,250 - again, this was a good price compared to many others that we looked at ($10K+)

Photographer : $5400

Flowers : not sure yet but just shoot me now

We need to rethink this except people will literally line up for days for the new ones.  The functionality of a phone today including its computing power is incredible, the screens are amazing, the cameras are fantastic.  I spend more time on my phone than I do my laptop or my iPad and neither seemed expensive when I bought those.  The only reason we think phones are expensive is because we remember the clamshells.
I remember dropping $400 on a Motorola Razr on cingular and that was after $100 rebate. Oof

Just the wedding? Oooof that's ridiculous. Doing the reception with dinner and drinks? Pretty solid deal.

Extremely insane. Its the worst money you will spend . The fairytale wedding is a horrible thing we program into our young girls and I'm a father of 2. Unless you guys are combining 250k a year spending 40-50k seems crazy. Tighten up that get list from190+ to 80-100.

Fully expecting to pay near or over 100k for each of my girls' weddings some time in 20-30 years from now or so, x3 = $300k+.  And that's assuming we don't have any more :scared:

I heard once the best way to plan a wedding is never tell the people providing services that it's for a wedding because then they jack up the price

gotta be slick

Yet, despite hardware continuously getting cheaper, phones themselves keep getting priced higher.  Even worse, cell phones are much worse with planned obsolescence than most other devices.  They only really last around 2 years as each update makes them slower and kills the battery life (which, guess what, you cannot swap out on most models).  In particular, Verizon has way too much control over the devices they sell and force these harmful updates.

$7250 for a BAND?  Remember, this is for a dance that people only dance at because they feel obligated to. How about hiring a DJ instead?

There are probably several independent photographers that would do it for less than that professional you're hiring.

And tell your mom that her church friend that met you one time can't come and exchange a soup ladle for a $173 meal.

We paid just around $12k for ours and had right at 100 people show up.  You don't need a band :lmao:

If it were up to me, we'd plug my iPod in.

We both prefer a live band over a DJ but to cut costs, we were looking into prices for a DJ and were getting quotes in the $6K range. Getting this band at $7K wasn't too bad.

We paid $300 for our DJ.  In Charleston, which is a very busy wedding market.

To quote Kevin O'Leary aka Mr. Wonderful from Shark Tank

"Look, I love two industries very much: I love weddings, and I love people dying. You know why? Because when both of those happen, people make stupid decisions. Emotional decisions, not financial decisions."

:bag:

It's $1k or so difference.

Where do you live?

Live bands at weddings blow. They play songs nobody wanted to hear again 10 years ago at tempos people aren't familiar with at volumes that will have your ears ringing for days.

The very best wedding band simply can't play modern music as it's so produced now, yeah it's cheesy to have a guy hitting play on a touch pad but that's life and music now.

If you get a good live band they're great with a crowd and better than a Dj. They're hard to come by though and Dj is generally safer and smarter.

Where the hell do you live that a DJ is charging $6,000 for a gig?  I agree weddings are ridiculously expensive but you should be able to find a decent DJ for $200 or so per hour.   At $6,000 that's like a grand an hour for someone playing music...holy ####.

You should be able to cut at least 2k of the photographer . Wedding photogs are in a downward pressure spiral , they are taking a beating  . Make sure its photography & videography

New York - Queens neighborhood
Ha, I work for the company that owns Ravel hotel, in LIC.

Send me a PM if you need a DJ cheaper than that, I work in nightlife and can definitely get you one for legit money.

5 grand for a wedding photog, holy crap.

How much are you paying the wedding planner?

thats someone at the top of their field. A primary and backup photographer plus a separate videographer and very skilled at post production . I'd pay that before the7k band if I had to splurge on one. Still a  3k photographer can get you probably 90-95% of what 5.4k one can.

:lmao:  wait until  he sees the still unknown flower bill

Much appreciated. We booked the band already and the SO really likes them, so no turning back now.

TBH - I only spoke to one DJ that quoted me at that price and I am positive that I could have gotten a better price if I searched around some more. I think that as soon as I mentioned the word 'wedding' to any vendor, they jack the price up 25%.

We have to hire a wedding planner? ####.
Not really, but I would really recommend you at least have a day of wedding planner or coordinator.

Or at least have one person responsible for making sure the timeline is kept to.

And let's be honest, do we know anyone who would say that they'd rather have the $40k wedding that daddy threw them vs say $20k in cash or a new car or paying off student loan debt, whatever.  And how old is your princess for curiosities sake?

I'm just gonna slide a check across the table and say wedding, or cash it.  Your call.
Yep.  Wife's parents gave us $10k and my wife would have probably preferred to spend it on the honeymoon (instead of another large amount on it)  Smart girl..

We're both in our mid 30s.

Company I work for definitely makes the most money on weddings.

Food cost, for example, you are generally paying restaurant prices for less than restaurant quality.  Most entrees come frozen, they just yank em out, heat them up, and charge you restaurant prices.  Plus, they get those frozen entrees even cheaper from the distributor because they orderd 100 of them.  Or 1000, if they are smart, and bought 5 weedings worth of entrees.

The open bar is another.  You should be looking to pay $25/hr/person.  Any more than that is robbery.  And I might look to negotiate that down if I had a big wedding.    Here's a good one to avoid:

Venues will price an open bar for beer/wine, and another, slightly higher price for liquor included (house/well, the cheap stuff).  Whatever that beer and wine price is, should be the same as liquor.  Because any venue that knows what they are doing, their well liquor, per drink, will be cheaper than beer or wine.  So they are actually better off having everyone drink vodka/soda than drink Bud Light.  Places I've worked, the sales team is instructed to always include well liquor in the open bar.  If the client doesn't go for it, the sales person will offer it as a free perk/doing a favor for them.

Some people get open bars based on consumption, because their crowd isn't big drinkers.  Horrible mistake.  The staff is just going to ring up a bunch of drinks no one ordered.

The quality of photos were very apparent when looking at different photographers. Some looked so amateur and were still well north of $3K. We have video included in this package, so not too bad.

My brother got married 4 years ago and payed about $3,500 for his photographer. Nearly every vendor's prices (venue, entertainment, photos) have increased a ton since then. @Otis should be looking at paying more like $200K in 30 years.

I think it's one of those deals where they know they have you over a barrel.

It's like, ''Listen pal, word's out on what a horrible investment this is.  So if you still here, that means wifey wants what she wants, so why wouldn't we turn the screws?''

Sucks.

My best friend, a girl, had a destination wedding at a beach.  Set up a group rate, and if you could make it, you could make it.  They threw a reception with open bar and passed apps for everyone when they got back.  Not everyone's family likes these kind of deals, and it's not an option for a lot of people, and I get that, but man, that's my choice.

My daughter is 6.  How much should I be putting back per paycheck to cover her wedding?  15-20%?

Oof.

My wife and I got married at the courthouse. Thankfully she's very practical when it comes to this stuff. My FIL handed us a $10k check and was happy to do so. We then put it toward  the down payment for a house.

My oldest D just got married on a beach in Hawaii in October. Just immediate family . Fantastic time and I feel like I dodged a bullet
