Things that are inexplicably expensive (1 Viewer)

My best friend, a girl, had a destination wedding at a beach.  Set up a group rate, and if you could make it, you could make it.  They threw a reception with open bar and passed apps for everyone when they got back.  Not everyone's family likes these kind of deals, and it's not an option for a lot of people, and I get that, but man, that's my choice.
My wife and I did this. Even though we gave family and friends a year and half to plan, it knocked out a lot of folks from attending, but saved us a ton of money as I was the one paying for everything. A month or so later we threw a party at my parent's house for all the friends/family that couldn't make the destination.

Destination wedding was a great deal because depending on the number of guests we got a lot of perks. Our honeymoon suite and stay was basically free because of the number of people that came and rented rooms. Open bar and food was cheap because its already an all-inclusive place. However, they still put you over a barrel on certain things because you only have a handful of choices: decorations, DJ vs Live Band (I paid to rent a sound system for $200 bucks and plugged my old iphone in), makeup and hair (wife brought a ton of makeup with her ahead of time to save $) and I can't believe how much they wanted for stuff like lights or a dance floor on the beach. Only thing we splurged on was a photographer, there was a major difference in quality for the price.

Have had friends do the camera's on the table thing and they always regretted it. The picture quality from drunk friends/family taking the shots usually unusable.

I was at my cousins wedding a long time ago when I saw this for the firs time, the disposables on the table.

Myself and a few other cousins grabbed a few off the tables, and proceeded to take goofy shots all around the venue, posing as if in mid-fistfight, me coming out of the ladies room zipping up, passed out on the stairs drunk, etc.

My cousins wife was a bit of a stick in the mud, so we didn't know how they would be received.  I asked my cousin about it years later, and he said our pics were her favorites, so that says quite a bit about how boring pics of old people with frozen smiles over half-eaten food can be.

I've always wondered how many **** pics show up when a couple gets those developed.

Box sets for old tv shows

i just paid $125 for the full sopranos series through Xbox live.

why so expensive for a download? I can understand if it's the physical box set with whatever goodies come with it but the streaming should be around half that

I'm in a Verizon store right now. Most of the new phones are more than $30/month. The Pixel XL is $36/month with a retail of $869. For a phone (I know it's really a computer, but still...).

IPhone 7+ is $40/month, $970 retail.

We need to reconsider this whole thing, people.
Why do people feel a need to upgrade every year?

No matter the angle from which you approach it, good p---y is really expensive. Guess it's not inexplicable, though. Que sera sera.

Live bands at weddings blow. They play songs nobody wanted to hear again 10 years ago at tempos people aren't familiar with at volumes that will have your ears ringing for days.

The very best wedding band simply can't play modern music as it's so produced now, yeah it's cheesy to have a guy hitting play on a touch pad but that's life and music now.
Could not disagree more.  Local Detroit band Sun Messengers played ours.  7 piece band, Motown classics, horns, chops...dance floor was packed.  Last song, the entire room was shouting "ONE MORE SONG - ONE MORE SONG"....they closed with an awesome version of "Shout" which had people doing Animal House recreations.  One of my life's highlights.  Worth every penny.

Fully expecting to pay near or over 100k for each of my girls' weddings some time in 20-30 years from now or so, x3 = $300k+.  And that's assuming we don't have any more :scared:
#### that. I'm grateful that my wife wanted a marriage and not a wedding. The closest people in our lives and that was it. Ended up beautiful and about $500

You should be able to cut at least 2k of the photographer . Wedding photogs are in a downward pressure spiral , they are taking a beating  . Make sure its photography & videography
My wife is a retired photographer.  That price for wedding photography is egregious.  She said she'd fly to NY and do it for half that.

Buy a bunch of cheap digital cameras for guests and make them take pictures.  Wa la
Did this for my first wedding in Vegas (which, predictably, ended like most Vegas weddings) and while I did appreciate the cost associated with disposable cameras at every table and some of the fun pictures we got back, I could have done without the pictures of male genitalia, manginas and poop in the toilet pics.

This is who we had play my daughters wedding Jonny Barber aka the Velvet Elvis  - it was awesome. Dance floor full all afternoon long to the King and other early rock hits.

Danced with my daughter to Rock this Town for father-daughter dance - it was a great time.

cost 2K and well worth it.

There's a huge gap in music.  Not everyone wants to dance to motown anymore, even if with an  great rendition.  The majority of music made between 1985 and 2015 is not easily translatable to a dance floor without heavy production content.  I mean Shout?  Really? I'm glad it was an epic version, but how many more years can people get hammered and dance to that?

And is it worth 8 to 10k over a DJ?  For 2 hours ish of content?

Extremely insane. Its the worst money you will spend . The fairytale wedding is a horrible thing we program into our young girls and I'm a father of 2. Unless you guys are combining 250k a year spending 40-50k seems crazy. Tighten up that get list from190+ to 80-100.
We did 8.

Kitchen Cabinets - $30k for new wooden boxes??? I can get an entry level Benz instead!!
We remodeled an older house last year and my wife got harangued by the Home Depot Remodel Crew shopping there one day, and surrendered to them like a religious cult.  They arranged to send an agent to our house to discuss our options.  Few days later, a lady shows up with a big briefcase and tells us that the existing cabinets are solid wood (they weren't) and in her expert opinion, we would be best served refinishing the existing cabinets vs buying new.  She went on to price out granite counter tops, backsplash, etc.  They would take the existing cabinets down and refinish them, then hang them back up.  Asked us to give her a few minutes to calculate a price for us, calls us back in and then gave me the "This is the time I like to tell the husband to get a drink".  Why?  Because her price was $25,000+.......to take the old, crappy cabinets down, polish the turds up and hang them.

I could not shove that lady out of my house fast enough. We got brand new hickory cabinets at Parr Lumber for less than $4,000 and had our contractor install them as part of his remodel price.  Went with quartz counter tops and skipped on backsplash for another day.  All for less than $10,000.

Opened with Otis Redding, moved right into Stevie Wonder and kept the dance floor moving all night.  Maybe the people that attended our wedding were less about needing cool, hipster music and more into just dancing the night away with the classics.  If I get too cool to drunkenly dance and have fun over a live version of "Shout", I'll just get off my own lawn.

I think you probably need to relax when you want to go to it.

Threads like this remind me how nice it is to have a wife who doesn't give a damn about this stuff.   Of course, we lived in sin for close to ten years, and at that point, she would have agreed to a ceremony at the local garbage dump if it resulted in marriage.

I had to fight to find a way to get sprint to sell us new phones under contract and not pay monthly for leasng them. Took a little work but that option is still out there. NFW am I paying full boat for a phone and still paying the same price for service as I did when the service price was subsidizing the phone too.

Yeah weddings are a tough one.  My wife and I had a wonderful wedding.  Tried to keep costs down by keeping the guest list under 100.  The reception hall, DJ, food, photography, etc. was all great.  Wonderful party.  Everybody had a great time. Will look back on it fondly.

That said, the day absolutely flew by and it's hard not to look back and say, now that we have real life debts and goals, that at least part of the wedding costs couldn't have been better allocated elsewhere.

I don't claim to be Nostradamus, but I saw the bolded coming a mile away. I mean, jeez, put yourself in a cell company's boardroom about that time ...

"Hmmm. Now that we've decided to no longer subsidize the hardware costs for a service basically every American uses, we could cut the price of that service by a corresponding amount ... or! We could keep prices the same and send that extra cash straight to our bottom line.

"Decisions, decisions..."

Venue : $133.50 per head + 20% tip + tax = $173.21 per person * roughly 160 guests
$133 per person is the best price we found. Many others in my area were $190+

Band : $7,250 - again, this was a good price compared to many others that we looked at ($10K+)

Photographer : $5400

Flowers : not sure yet but just shoot me now
I feel like we are planning the same wedding.  My prices are very similar with similar number of guests.   Its ridiculous.

Two good items here that folks are raising:

1) Weddings.  I can't wrap my mind around spending $40K on a wedding, and I say that as somebody whose FIL dropped more than that on our wedding about 25 years ago.  That was an insane waste of money, but it was an event for my in-laws and parents, not my wife and me.  Mrs. K and I both agree that there is no way we are going that route for our own daughter.  We are going to pay for her college and we're more than happy to write her a check for a down payment on a house if need be, but we're not throwing money away on something as frivolous as a wedding reception.  That's ####### crazy and I would be disappointed in her if she asked.

2) Cell phone plans.  I was a one of the last people I know to get a phone, because they strike me as preposterously over-priced.  Both the phone itself, and the associated data plan.  At this point in my career though, I can't not have one, and we bit the bullet and did the whole family thing because my kids were also the only kids without phones in our little circle for a number of years.  Why does your average middle-class person spring for this kind of thing, though?  I can afford this, and it makes me throw up in my mouth when I see what we're playing each month.  So how does somebody making the median household income justify this expense?
