I shop at like 5 different stores for my groceries, and Whole Foods, while more expensive than the big box grocers, is substantially cheaper than the small coops. And if you stick with their 365 brand, I find that it is comparable to most stores

Some of the bigger name tech DJs/Producers that play at big festivals make 25k+ some a lot more. 

They also in theory are playing their music or at least a chunk of it are their songs so there's that.

Blinds or curtains? I got some new blinds for my bedroom this past weekend at Home Depot. Faux wood that actually looks great and has a quality feel to them. HD cut them to size and I hung them pretty easily. 3 windows cost slightly under $150. 

 
Movie popcorn and drinks. I don't mind the huge markup, but at least let me pretend there's a reason beyond just gouging... 

20 Oz popcorn : $5.40

36 Oz popcorn : $5.80

90 oz tub: $6.50

 
Closer to intent of thread : pick your own apples. Around Chicago, it is much cheaper just to go to the grocery store than pick your own at an orchard

My problem is I love Whole Foods. I'll go in there and sure there's reasonable items, but I can't walk past the delish items that are pricey. I think that's a catch for many that they count on, esp their ready made foods. mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

And we were looking for an acknowledgement of the 2nd sentence where I outlined that as well. There is quite a difference between an actual producer of the music vs some wedding DJ. It does seem like an exhorbitent amount of money so LLama look at that, I agree with you.

I have to agree also.  People still talk about the good time they had at my wedding.

 
Cheap shoes.

Not expensive shoes.  Expensive shoes are not expensive.  Expensive shoes last a very, very long time, and a visit to a cobbler (very inexpensive) extends their life.  $300 for a pair of wingtips that last years and years is not expensive, for anyone that needs wingtips, anyway.  

But $100 to $150 for a pair of shoes that look like garbage after two wearings is a lot of money.

Women do look at them and for some reason think men do too. They haven't figured out that we treat cards like Pacino does in Ocean's thirteen, rip, glance, tear up.

I would spend $7.50 less on a birthday card for my wife and $7.50 more on her gift.  I think she'd be happy   :shrug:      

 
Hockey sticks have gotten freaking ridiculous. $150 for an "average" stick and damn near $400 for a high end one. I remember fighting with my dad to get the $15 stick instead of the $10 one.

We have guys on our beer league team that go through $2k+ a year in sticks easy. They think they're still in NCAA or Major Junior buuut that was about 50lbs ago. 6-7 sticks a year easy @ $3-400 per.

That explains your position a lot. Me? No, I could give two ####s about going back and looking at them (but my wife sure as hell does), but there are tons of people that look back at their photo's or have them all over their house, in scrapbooks, uploaded to facebook, etc.

When I was in the business, I kept my prices on the low end.  I ended up losing business because I was much cheaper, but people equated it with inferior.

People who I care about and vice versa, yes. Not only look at them, save them. My fam has a shrine of cards from people they love. Some families are sentimental like that. Obviously, not all..

I go back and look at the cards my grandparents gave me over the years. They've been dead a long while now so that's all I have left along with photos.

Pro Tip: After browsing and selecting the card to buy, use the greeting card messages from cards you didn't buy to write some mushy stuff in the one you do buy.  Chicks like it when you write mushy stuff

Do they have stuff written in them? I have one card my husbands grandmother sent me on our anniversary that has full essays in it. I would never throw that away. But stuff that just says "love, mom" hits the trash.

Of course. My fam either buys blanks or those that don't say much so they can put their own words to it. That's what makes it special. I've kept notes from a legal pad. So since I know some people will keep mine, I do consider the card as a gift and buy cool, nice ones like papyrus puts out. My fam is artsy too so this is bonus. I used to make papyrus type cards before they became big by going to Michaels and buying materials. I should get back into it.

My 9yo just decided to start hockey. So far we have gotten his stick at Play it Again Sports for way cheaper than that. Do I need to shut down this crazy idea of his now?

The prices for these are often crazy. But if you buy them from the bulk spice kiosks that they have at a lot of grocery stores, they are a lot less expensive.

Example: Bay leaves. A jar of bay leaves (containing a whopping 0.12 oz. of those little babies) costs $3.50 at WalMart and $4-$6 at a regular grocery store.

My wife recently bought a bag of bay leaves that was more than enough to refill our old jar in the bulk section and it didn't even register on the scale at the check out counter. The checker put her thumb on the scale lightly to get it to register any weight at all. Final cost: $0.17.

Savings: 95%.

Sticks used to be the cheapest part of equipment. Now the damn things cost more than skates and last about a quarter as long. Go the cheap route for as long as you can then once he starts using mens sticks, do a group buy with other parents to get a bit of a discount.

Nah, who knows if he'll stick with it, let him decide on his own. Hopefully he does, it's a blast. He won't be snapping sticks any time soon, and the cheap ones are fine for him for a few years.

Hockey seems like it would be one of the most expensive sports for parents if your kid is any good. Equestrian and Gymnastics are others.

 
At the top of the list has to be abstract art. Jackson Pollock paintings sell for like $50,000 per square inch.
