Things to do in Detroit (1 Viewer)

Slow's has a spot in Grand Rapids I've eaten at, and it was great.  You guys are making me hungry.

It begins and ends at The Henry Ford. Greenfield Village (attached) is probably not possible or will be very crowded as they hold a nightly special event that time of year.

I'm pretty sure every city has a great craft beer scene.  It's pretty much the one thing to get millenials and young professionals to go spend money.
Moreover, Oregon is VERY territorial with its craft beers when you go shopping for them at stores.  You'll find craft offerings from very few other states, usually Washington and California and Kona out of Hawaii (which is part of a larger conglomerate).  Recently, I've been able to buy Founders All Day IPA out of Michigan, which is one of the best session IPAs in the land.  I can buy an 18-pack for $16.99, which is a steal of a deal.  There's no craft beers from Florida or Maine or Nebraska or Virginia being sold out here.  So I defend my stance on Michigan craft beers being great.  Harumph!

If there will be downtime while at Cobo, bring bikes. You can pick up the trail at the waterfront and head north to the state park. There is an adventure center there and you can pick up The Cut (really cool path with graffiti art). You can take the path to Eastern Market; awesome places to eat here and all kinds of shops.
There are a couple options if you don't want to bring bikes.  You can rent on the riverfront from a place called Wheelhouse Detroit (sorry, it's not the FBG).  There are also bike share stations around the city that they recently put in called MoGo.

Yup, a lot of the Michigan craft beers are over here on the west side, including Founders.

Seriously, one of the best museums ever made. And riding in the Ford Model T in Greenfield village is just icing on the cake.

The old Big Buck Brewery off I-75 is now another Fowling place  too, drove past last weekend and it looked like it was open.
Yeah that's a lot farther for me but could be doable

Ah that's a bit closer to me, and not in a scary neighborhood!
The one in detroit does look like they could film the walking dead at it.  I'd probably venture to AH if it means Swirve is in, but Detroit strongly preferred

Where in Farmington Hills?
How the hell should I know?

We'll be there for a taekwondo tournament in the Cobo Center right on the river downtown.  We'll be staying with some family - I'll be back with that location.

We like history, museums, zoos - family stuff.

We're planning to head up to Dearborn to hit a kebab place my Iraqi coworker recommended.  Those are the only real plans at this point.  We'll have at least one day where we have an early weigh-in, then the whole day is free.
best place in Dearborn for med food is the Country Restaurant, hands down.

Around Farmington Hills is Marvelous Marvin's Mechanical Museum (or something like that).  Good place to kill 2 hours for kids N adults.  Lots of old coin-op games from 1900s->

The Detroit one is so much better.  The Auburn Hills one is a cheap imitation (they can't even use the word "fowling").  Do the original.  Place is really cool inside and has a great beer selection.

I can't believe it hasn't been asked yet, but does your kid know the "crane technique"?

If do right, no can defend!

downtown Detroit is awesome

Campus Martius park - has the beach bar - right in front of Compuware building.  There are games there including outdoor table tennis and basketball courts.  You can get a drink at the "beach" and let the kids play.

Punch bowl social - Good place to take the kids.  Has all sorts of games throughout.

Greektown - casino and authentic greek food. plus good Cajun in Fishbones.  A good place to go in Greektown to get pizza for the kids is Nikki's. They also have good greek food (many other great greek restaurants if you want greek food).

this Saturday night we are going Fowling in Hamtramck

Townhouse - good restaurant on woodward.

Corktown - (old tiger stadium area) - UFO Factory bar if you want to check out some music, SLOWs BBq (very good bbq). Ottava Via - if you want italian.  Mercury Bar or Nemo's if you want a good burger (or go to Green Dot Stables for gourmet sliders if you are not scared to drive by some blight).

North of the stadiums ( mid town ish) - Catch the QLine from downtown up to this area (Canfield stop).  It's free all summer.

Hop Cat Bar - Jolly Pumkin - Motor City Brewing - if you like the micro-brew scene

Grey Ghost - restaurant (heard this is hard to get into)

To get to Jolly Pumkin or Motor City Brewing, you need to walk a block west from Woodward.  Cool area.  Check out Shinola and Third Man Records while there.

Late night after the bars/baseball game

Lafayette/American coney island

Drive to Bucharest Grill and get a chicken schwarma.
A few comments added above.

Flew into Flint for the first time.  Will never use DTW again.  Flint all the way.

Hit Old Detroit Bar & Grille for lunch yesterday.  Had a terrific Italian Sub, Ragadyass IPA, some Keno with the older boys (cool that you can play that with minors here; can't in Oregon) and also hit the driving range.  Weather is picture perfect here.

Hitting the Clansman tonight for pizza.  Cool place but that's a curious name for a restaurant in 2017. :oldunsure:

Question: Why can't residential houses in metro Detroit have fenced back yards?  Nobody I know out here is allowed to have one.  Is it weather related?  So weird.  I want privacy in my backyard.

On my third Belle's Two Hearted.

Thinking of hitting a Utica Unicorns game tomorrow at Jimmy John's Field. Supposed to be a fun minor league experience.  Family member is best friends with the Lou & Harry's gyro joint that sells at this stadium on Friday.

I have a fence

Fences seem to be against the neighborhood association policy in a lot of newer neighborhoods though

Outstanding venue and experience.  Great food and you can't take 4 or 5 steps without being in eye shot of someone selling booze or beer.  The suites are awesome too, with bar service and their own fire pits.  Only, slight, negative is that parking around there can be a mess if there are events at the city park nearby and the downtown bars are packed (which could be the case tomorrow night).

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.  We just left the Ford museum and it was enjoyed by everyone in the family.

Food has been brutal so far.  My boy had been on a strict diet for a month prior weigh-in, and when asked where he wanted to eat after passing weigh-in, he chose Subway.  Ugh.

Dinner is going to blow - our hosts want takeout Outback.  I haven't eaten at one in at least 13 years.

I hope to get control of the food choices tomorrow...

I have a week of training in Rochester Hills area the week of the 24th. Any good food choices that area?  seems to be pretty far north suburb area from the map.  We get a $50 dinner budget (each), which I would like to put to good use.

Would love to do Henry Ford Museum, but don't think we will be out of traiining until 4 each day.  I'm not a big drinker, but can enjoy one or two.  Anyone know anything about this particular area?  Nice?  Crappy?

I will also be up there last week of September, so I hope it doesn't suck.

Any luck with the food for the rest of the trip? Shame on your hosts for taking you to Outback

It is a nice area. There are a lot of places to eat in the area. Rochester Mills Brewing Company, Rojo (Mexican), Kruse & Muer, Bravo, Mitchells Fish Market, Rochester Chop House and Alibi are the places that come to mind in Rochester Hills. Troy has a lot of restaurants. Lake Orion has Sagebrush Cantina and Lockhart's BBQ.

Rochester Hills is nice. It's Oakland County which is one of the wealthiest counties in the country. I would recommend Union Woodshop (BBQ)- I have heard La Botana has some awesome tamales. If you are really into food and are able to make reservations, Mabel Gray is outstanding, but it's the kind of place where you order the chefs menu and they just bring you dishes so there is no room for being picky. There is also a city called Troy which is right by there that has a bunch of nice places, but they are all escaping my mind.

As for weather, it SHOULD be gorgeous. It should be highs between 65-75 and lows between 50-60.

Yeah Rochester is a nice area, but I'm not too familiar with it.  I know there are a lot of higher end chains and stuff like that.   I'll see what else I can find.  Auburn Hills and Troy also close by as well

I second the Mills... decent food and beer.

Just booked my hotel in Auburn Hills, which is apparently just 2.5 miles from my training site, so lots of good suggestions so far.  Will definitely hit up the Woodshop BBQ one night.  Would love to try the Mitchell's fish market.  I will have to clear that through my travel buddy, but he's retired Navy like me, so he better like fish markets.

Union Woodshop is in Clarkston so probably 15-20 min drive at most.  Good chance you'll have to wait for a table though

Mitchells is a higher end seafood chain.  There's also Ocean Prime in Troy but that's $$$

Mon Jin Lau is good for sushi / Asian

Also a Twin Peaks in Madison Heights if you're into Breastraunts

Buddy's Pizza has several locations and is always good

Tons of great choices Downtown Detroit so if you do decide to venture down one night let us know

Downtown Rochester is a really nice place. Plenty of food options and shopping. Quaint, upscale little village.

No real feedback on were to dine, but if you want to get away from work and get outside for some exercise Stony Creek MetroPark is only 15 minutes or so away.  The paved "ring" around the lake is a perfect 10K.  I prefer running the Mountain Bike Trails as you can throttle up or down between hills and flat ground.

Rochester Tap House also pretty cool.  Two of the former Sagebrush cooks/workers opened up a new place in Lake Orion called Rio on Main that has 100 beers on tap, but I didn't get a chance to try it.  I took my boys to Old Detroit Bar & Grill three times while we were there.  Had the same server who made the experience a lot of fun.  They don't let kids play Keno in Oregon, so it was fun to do that with them and enjoy some great pub grub at very reasonable prices.  On Tuesday, I got a half pound burger for half off because I ordered a beer.  That's insane.  Couldn't finish it, but damn it was it good.  Also in Lake Orion, Lockharts BBQ is pretty decent; cool vibe in there and good enough BBQ.

Had our rehearsal dinner at Rochester Mills Brewing Company so I really have a soft spot for that one.

Not gonna lie, this past trip to Michigan might have sealed the deal for me.  I'm looking at houses and jobs there now just to get a feel for what might be in my future.  I'm very pro-Michigan, though I say that coming back from perfect weather and great great times.
