This Generation Isn’t As Stupid As We Think (1 Viewer)

It's a good song with a lovely chorus. The ultra MOR production of Christopher Cross' hit did it no favors but this live version by songwriter Peter Allen from the Muscular Dystophy telethon is crazy but it's true.

For example, Arthur’s Theme hit number one on the Hot 100 in October if 1981. It may or may not have made a Tim countdown. I would not know. But that’s Exhibit A. That song is pure putrid.
I'm not sure what that has to do with this generation being stupid or not. Both generations could be stupid.

Arthur:
Do you know what I'm going to do? I'm going to take a bath.

Hobson:
I'll alert the media.

Arthur:
Do you want to run my bath for me?

Hobson:
It's what I live for.

Hobson:
Perhaps you would like me to wash your #### for you... you little #####.

Meh. It was implied that one thinks the other is stupid. Not a necessary inference, but an understood one. That which was sacrificed for clarity's sake winds up as a more compelling title because of the immediate reaction of "Nuh uh. No way could they not be!" (As stupid as we think.)

It may have hit #1 but finished at #64 among the best ranked singles of the year per Billboard, so there were a lot of songs most people in 1981 liked better.

It was Christopher Cross's first release of 1981 following two huge 1980 hits (Ride The Wind and Sailing) and winning a boatload of Grammy's, so his past popularity and momentum was probably most responsible for its success.

Per squistion’s link, Bill Withers had the number eighteen song overall in 1981, so that is further proof that thread synergy exists.

I’ve done 1981 already and my list looks very different from that one. 81 was a great year for music but you wouldn’t know it by following Billboard.
