THIS IS THEIR BEST SONG! - Music Draft - Saturday Night's Alright for iFighting (3 Viewers)

16.18 - America - Daisy Jane (1975)

https://youtu.be/aUtcbkQBOyc

I've listened to Horse With No Name, Tin Man, Ventura Highway and Sister Gold Hair so many times that I am to the point that I practically run out of the room at top speed, screaming, when I hear any of them. Don't get me wrong, great songs but they have played to death (at least for me).

Anyway, my favorite is actually this wistful love ballad.

🎶Does she really love me

I think she does

Like the stars above me

I know because

When the sky is bright

Everything's all right🎶
@krista4this is the song that I alerted you to in my 1975 countdown because it was produced by George Martin (and is a squillion times better than that horse song).

The best part is that there's more videos of them wearing different clothing at the same location - meaning they were asked back to play.

That might be explained by the intro:

It should be noted that the store owner has always been a big supporter of all local musicians (both good and bad) and even gave me a chance to do some awful stand up (see my other video "Worst Comedian Ever"). T

The band doesn't have a name, but I've been calling them Hobby Lobotomy. And yes, this is real and not staged.

I love how Raging Weasel sniped me on Monster Magnet, a band I'd been putting off picking for days (Because I knew he'd pick them eventually).

Tra la goes the draft.

Just a FYI. Once all the picks are in and the 20th round is complete, I may post a few extra picks because I didn't get rolling until Round 11. (Thanks for letting me join in the fun btw).

Hopefully this won't cause any draft participants too much pain & suffering. #toomuchgoodmusiclefttochoosefrom.

Round 17.xx

Aesop Rock ft. Kimya Dawson - Crows 1

Ask me on any different day what my favorite Aesop song is and I'm sure to give you a different one. This one is today's choice because it's about death and mourning after the passing of his friend Camu Tao, a recording artist with Fat Possum. It features sung interludes by Moldy Peaches' Kimya Dawson. Anyway, there might be better off of this very album, but this one has always stood out on the album and struck me as emotionally astute and grieving, something I'm connecting with right now.

Okay, the tech support for tragedy's emphatically horrendous
Teenage operators explaining what bated breath is
Pass, I wish it were something I could diagram on a napkin
so you won't feel so detached if it should happen to you privately
Publicly your shadows'll cat call back
Happy to split the button eye and burlap doll
Crack the crypt
Bats eject like cousin death's wing-ed Iapdogs ricocheting sonar of the sacrilege
Now let me slow this whole #### down for all you half-goat cowards
I'll even grit my teeth for you
I am so completely off the god-damn grid it's not a question of addressing me,
it's "what do these symbols under the dresser mean"?

I was worried about being sniped by Manster or another new drafter so couldn't wait any longer. Usually I'm the only who drafts them.

What song were you going to take?

Yeah, I thought about that and laughed. I'm not an expert on their catalog, though I've heard most of it, so I laid off.

"Powertrip" and "Tractor" are by far my two favorite songs by them. "Powertrip" was the choice.

Looks like I have three picks left to go, so I'll try  to get the most bang here.

For anyone seeking a virgin rabbit-holes to go down (pardon the very bad Tobias Funke-like phrasing), try seeking out "Tuareg guitar music" on the youTubes.  I've only scratched at this surface, but it's interesting to say the least.

With my 18th pick, straight from one of the most economically impoverished locales on the face of the earth ...

love those guys.  i've probably watched the tiny desk show a couple hundred times.

Round 18.11  -  You Sexy Thing  -  Hot Chocolate

I really needed a palate cleanser.

Such an underrated band. Yeah they are known for their dance tunes like the above and Every 1's A Winner, but early in their career they had songs with a social conscience/message. They did the original version of Brother Louie, that Stories had a hit with.

Cicero Park was really nice too.

🎶Sitting by my window
Watching another one begin to grow
Concrete trees growing wild
I can count 24 or more
Where are the children going to play?
Where are all the streams gonna flow

Life is dying out
Cicero Park, it's dying out (Cicero Park)
Life is dying out
Cicero Park, it's dying out (Cicero Park)🎶

18.24 - Laura Nyro - Stoned Soul Picnic

Nyro was one of the pioneering female singer/songwriters that came out of the Brill Building in the 60s. She wrote songs that became big hits for the Fifth Dimension, Barbra Streisand and Blood, Sweat & Tears although popularity as a solo artist mostly eluded her.

I was only familiar with her well-known songs but this draft game me the opportunity to dig deeper into her catalog.  There are a lot of wonderful songs but I fell back on "Stoned Soul Picnic" and its summery groove.

It's Stoney End for me, I think. I find new songs I love every time I rediscover her.

Laura Nyro's first LP had a bunch of songs that other people had hits with:

Wedding Bell Blues

Flim Flam Man

Stoney End

And When I Die

Blowin' Away

My favorite was Goodbye Joe, written (I believe) about a boyfriend being sent off to Vietnam.

🎶 Time is full of changes and now you've got to go.

Don't forget that we loved on the highland...

Goodbye, Joe.

(Goodbye, Joe...)

Yes, I understand, I'm trying not to cry.

But if I do, it's only cause I'll miss you...

One last time, let me kiss you! 🎶

17.14 - Keep Shelly in Athens - "Oostende"

Underrated artist that never really managed to hit the mainstream.  I suppose this fits in the chillwave/dream pop genre box, which I've never been shy about my love, but there's definitely more trip-hop and sorta dark shoegaze sound in some of their other songs.

Ultimately, they were late on the chillwave game and missed the fleeting brief period of relevance in the genre.  They're still around and making music, but have changed vocalists over the years and the sound has changed a bit as a result.

There was a period in the early '10s where they were under-the-radar Bandcamp darlings - this is one of their bigger "hits", if you can call it that, from that era.  Slightly dark, haunting dream pop.

18.20 - Kim Petras - "Malibu"

Surprisingly difficult song selection for someone with only two studio albums, given the proliferation of non-album singles in the Spotify era.  But this one will do....mindless, delightfully vapid, saccharine dance pop.  Was pretty disappointed Bonnaroo got cancelled due to the hurricane over Labor Day weekend, was really looking forward to this show.

Strong Michael Jackson vibe on this one

A Kim Petras fan! Bless you! I think that being known as a trans artist has really worked against her popularity and career.

My favorite of hers, which is a great dance song:

🎶Hillside boys, you call my name
You make my heart sparkle like champagne🎶

that would be my choice of Nyro's "trying to be somebody" songs, when she was Dave Geffen's only client and he was prompting her to work it for prosperity & posterity. after he threw her over for Cali & Joni, that's when she did the work that showed the world that there was no conflict between taming the world and letting it reduce you to crying on a bathroom floor all night and that the strongest moments of life are supposed to be fragile. when i need to shrivel into a corner and wonder how to die, it's You Dont Love Me When I Cry. when i just want to love & remember her (i got to watch her record for a coupla days in the mid-70s and i dont think i've ever fallen so hard for anyone) i listen to her remarkable tribute (w LaBelle) to the music she grew up on,  Gonna Take a Miracle.

but if i had draft one song, it'd be Upstairs By A Chinese Lamp

I'm caught up, 2 to go. I'll throw darts I think. But later. Wish me luck. Hospital day with brother in law, if you recall that situation I deal with. Ooof, used to love going to LA so much. Now I'd rather not.

RD 19 Check It Out - John Cougar Mellencamp

My Midwest sensibilities will not allow me to let JCM go undrafted. Growing up in the Midwest in the 1980s it was state law that you had love Mellencamp. All kidding aside, no one wrote better songs depicting life for average folks in the heartland. It spoke to us.

In my younger years I would have most certainly chosen a different JCM song, Jack and Diane, Small Town, Rain on the Scarecrow were my favorites. But now in my 40s, Check It Out just hits different. Great song, great lyrics.

Hard to pick against You're The Biggest Part Of Me, but this was this L.A. band's first hit and didn't receive the attention it deserved at the time because their label 20th Century Fox had a really poor distribution arm. And it was subsequently overshadowed by their later hits.

David Patt was a superb vocalist. a great guitarist and has never really gotten the recognition he deserved, even to this day.

Majorly talented band that could do much more than yacht rock. In addition to this one, my contenders for their #1 are Drink of Water, And/Somewhere I Never Travelled, I Wanna Know, Life Beyond LA, Still Not Satisfied and Ice Age.

I almost went with Life Beyond L.A. since that is where I have lived my entire life and can identify, unfortunately, with the lyrics:

🎶 Sometimes I think about the only way
That I'll ever see life beyond L.A. is dying 🎶
