THIS IS THEIR BEST SONG! - Music Draft - Saturday Night's Alright for iFighting (2 Viewers)

I told myself I was going to go in a different direction with some of my picks, and this is someone I've never selected before.

4.14  Frightened Rabbit - Poke

I have a lot of trouble making my way through modern indie music, as I haven't been willing to dedicate the time to weeding through the "single-groove" bands that sound somewhat alike to me to find those that pull me in and shake me around.  So while I'd heard of Frightened Rabbit over the years, I never gave them a listen until Northern Voice chose "The Modern Leper" in a recent draft.

I. Was. Blown. Away.

I vowed that I'd listen to more of their songs, but then all the usual stuff got in the way and it didn't happen.  Since I've promised to myself that I will not take a song in this draft unless I've listened to their whole original catalog, I spent the last couple of days listening to all of their records, making lists (first cut had 23 songs on it) and then winnowing down to a handful or two.

I figured I'd be safe not to take it in the last round since NV wouldn't pick before me, but then last night I realized...####...Dreaded Marco had two picks before mine.  These are the two people I associate most with this band.  Thank you, Marco, for not sniping!

Is this their best song?  I don't know, since I need to listen a lot more to make that decision.  "The Modern Leper" might very well be the best, but I wanted to go in a different direction, and this one has haunted me every time I've listened.

Others I've come back to over and over the past couple of days are Keep Yourself Warm, I Wish I Was Sober, Head Rolls Off, Late March Death March, State Hospital (Marco's favorite), and Things.  Thank you to this board for bringing this band to me!

I did not see that pick coming at all, but I love it (and hate it)!

I thought I only had to fend off NV for FRabbit---not aware of any other huge fans in this draft, but then again, I didn't know you had been indoctrinated :)

I had a hunch you were going to take that song---another of my favorites, and it is my daughter's favorite.

I've always thought Paul McCartney perfectly encapsulated a break-up with "For No One," but I'd say this song does, too.  The harshness of it is less disguised than Paul's lyrics, and it's equally devastating.

Quite the recommendation. I'll have to listen.

Ooh, I hope DS isn't the one in your head all the time. Woof for meows.

And, by the way, I wondered if you were going to be happy with a cat named DS because of almost that very reason (it wasn't so much that you'd be singing the song, but the association), but it's none my business, so I didn't say anything.

I'm not sure I understand this.  But really I was just joking because Candy Says is stuck in my head 99.9% of the time now.  :)

4.16  The Smiths - This Night Has Opened My Eyes (1984)

https://youtu.be/iWcQqWW3QCI

The Smiths and/or Morrissey are an acquired taste and despite huge popularity in the UK and Ireland, the band never quite clicked with with a US audience. Perhaps it was Morrissey's droll and melancholy vocals, combined with lyrics at times that were dark and/or sardonic (hard to imagine Girlfriend In A Coma being a mainstream hit here).

My selection, which was taken from a 1983 Peel Session and was released on the compilation LP Hatful Of Hollow the following year.

Despite the abrupt start (I suspect the beginning caught the sound engineer off guard) I think that it is the best thing that The Smith's ever did and should be a pleasant surprise to anyone who hasn't heard it before.

The track has the feeling of being recorded in a jazz club and has an absolute killer bass line. Morrissey's vocals, for once, are understated with a surprisingly subtle delivery that doesn't overpower the song, as he has the tendency to do.

I like them a lot too.  In fact, I had already completed a Frightened Rabbit writeup for "Modern Leper" and was just waiting until a later round to make the pick.   I recall that they had some popularity in the FFA music threads but with the way the draft was going, I didn't think they would be chosen until the later rounds.

"Poke" is one of my favorites.  I've been listening to the 3rd album, The Winter of Mixed Drinks, a lot recently.  In addition to "Things" I particularly like "The Loneliness and the Scream", "FootShooter", and "Yes, I Would".

RIP.

I left my list at the office, I didn't think I'd be up this weekend.  Give me a bit to make a pick, I can be skipped unless the next person is drafting a female vocalist.

The Moody Blues - Tuesday Afternoon

I was in 5th grade when I first heard this - buddy of mine had an older brother with album it was on (included "Nights In White Satin") but I was always drawn to this song.  I think it still holds up great.  Man did these guys change things around from "Go Now" - which I love  ...see Spinal Tap.

I wasn't really considering Frightened Rabbit early on here for whatever reason. Certainly one of my top 5 bands ever. My favourites would be HEAVILY skewed to The Midnight Organ Fight - "My Backwards Walk", "The Modern Leper", "Good Arms vs. Bad Arms" or branching beyond that, "I Wish I Was Sober", "The Oil Slick", "The Woodpile" or "Things".

In college, I named our broomball team "Something Against You" after the Pixies song.  I thought it was great on multiple levels.  Everyone else thought it was stupid.
I'm sure it was the same for this team. A couple other people knew why I called it that and the others were mostly  but I ran the team, so I called the shots.

I can't have more than 1 drink anymore.  2+ of anything and I feel like dog #### the next day.  Seemed to happen pretty quickly, as It wasn't that long I was having multiple gins most nights.
Yeah over the last 3-4 years it seems I get hungover easier and they last longer. If I'm already drunk and then smoke some of this modern killer weed I'm done for- out like a light.

I found "The Oil Slick" to be such a great uplifting song of perseverance and such until, you know 😥

There is light but there’s a tunnel to crawl through
There is love but its misery loves you
There’s still hope so I think we’ll be fine
In these disastrous times, disastrous times

The Roots - Table Of Contents (Pts 1 & 2)

I love this introductory blast off of Things Fall Apart. I instantly fell in love with this band back in '99 upon hearing it. The cymbals are simply played to perfection by Questlove and Black Thought scats along with a merriment in his boasting.

It's safe to assume in all confidence
That I'm one of the illest of the seven continents

Yo, you on my ####? Thanks for the compliments
You be ####ed up by my table of contents...

I can drink beer still :knockonwood: but I can't handle harder liquor at all anymore. I don't know if I've conditioned my body or if that's even a thing but a few beers in a night is fine but mix in some whisky and I'm toast for the night.

Was a tough decision, that one. "Water" and "The Seed 2.0" are two of the finer songs of the aughts, IMHO. A powerhouse rap troupe.

I suspect @Eephus might be taking a female vocalist so might need to wait.  Also, we're accumulating a lot of skips, so it wouldn't hurt to wait a minute.
