THIS IS THEIR BEST SONG! - Music Draft - Saturday Night's Alright for iFighting (8 Viewers)

I probably went to early on The Mamas and The Papas. As I think about it, I am usually the only one drafting them. Whoops. I’ve listened to them so much this year though so it felt necessary.

So I'm sticking with my theme of megastars with large catalogues...

George MichaelFather Figure

Like Prince or Madonna, no need to discuss the artist...everybody knows everything about him.  I will say I really enjoyed the biography "Freedom" that came out 4 years ago.  He passed while making the second part of the doc.  Nothing earth shattering in it but I thought it was well done and an easy watch.

Unlike several megastars I liked his work throughout his entire career so it's tough for me to pick a best.   Father Figure has always been my favorite song from his biggest album as it is not as formulaic as many of his other hits so I'll go with that.  In general I like his slower songs more than his upbeat/dance stuff as I think they capture his persona and talents more aptly which you could say for many artists I suppose.

My top 5 George Michael

1.  Father Figure

2.  Praying for Time

3.  One More Try

4.  I Knew You Were Waiting (with Aretha...hot take alert, this is the best pop duet of the entire decade)

5.  Jesus to a Child

Really difficult to limit it to even 5.  This list doesn't even touch on a lot of later stuff which I also love.  Not to mention some of his other epic collaborations.

Keep on skipping me.  With so much time between picks I feel like I have to make them really count.  I'll be pondering my options.

I've always liked Sia when I hear her- great songwriter,  great voice. not my sweet spot, in terms of the pop stylings, but full respect for her. I don't know this tune at all... but think I prefer Chandelier as a more iconic vocal- not sure I'm going to remember this one, tbh.
I hadn't heard it before I pulled together a 'best of Sia' sampler for the car.  This, Chandelier, and Elastic Heart are the standouts for me.  Top 3 female vocalist of this era, imo.

I thought Shuke might put an idea into other heads with his last song choice and ruin my next pick, buuuuutttt....

5.30 - Synchronicity II - The Police

The Police were the first rock band I ever got really into and Synchronicity was the first tape I ever bought myself. Just a masterful album all around (with the exception of the bone thrown to Andy Summers' s Mother - stick to playing, Andy). This song captures the best of the band - the creepy intro, Copeland's driving drumming, Summers's riffs and pre-shoegaze ambience, Sting's unique voice and lyrics mixing the mystic and the mundane - this will forever be the only song ever written that includes the lyrics "Rice Krispies," "crotch," and "loch." The video is great too with the band's dystopian take on life and music (while Sting pokes fun at Billy Idol). To this day I don't think a band got more sound out of a trio than The Police.

Edit: Funny story - my wife and I got to see The Police at Dodger Stadium during their reunion tour (Foo Fighters opened - awesome show), and as the show ended and everyone is trying to rush out of the stadium, amidst 50,000+ people we run into her brother /my brother-in-law and his wife from San Diego as we're heading through the exits. NEVER TELL ME THE ODDS.
Love the "humiliating kick in the crotch" line- use it IRL all the time.

My fav by them is Can't Stand Losing You

4.  I Knew You Were Waiting (with Aretha...hot take alert, this is the best pop duet of the entire decade)

He's not someone I ever seek out to listen to, but I probably should.  He seems very underappreciated to me (and apparently by me).

The above is certainly a better duet, but I also have an embarrassingly strong fondness for this one with Sir Paul.  It's schlocky, but they both sound great.

I don't think you're in the minority among music lovers.  I think he's largely underappreciated by critics because of his bubblegum pop stuff which is dumbed down for the masses and purposefully constructed/packaged to sell records.  For example, I'm not a big fan of "Faith" or "I want your sex."  I actually despise Faith.

I was not a big fan of Faith, but maybe because it had been played to death when it was popular.

I ran across a cover by one of my favorite bands, Lake Street Dive, who do a funky jazz pop rendition and I really enjoy their version of it.

6.10 XTC Dear God

So, this might not be a popular choice among XTC fans and many others won’t like the lyrics.  Andy Partridge wasn’t happy with the song either which was part of the reason it was left off the UK edition of Skylarking.  However, I love it.  The lyrics spoke to me as a young atheist in the pre-Internet age.  I love how Todd Rundgren, the producer, found a little girl to sing the beginning and end.  And that last minute. Wow!

This would have been my second choice.  I would have gone with Freedom, which I think is his most personal statement.

I think there's something you should know
(I think it's time I told you so)
There's something deep inside of me
(There's someone else I've got to be)
Take back your picture in a frame
(Take back your singing in the rain)
I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man

6.x - Brick + Mortar - Keep This Place Beautiful

this song is so catchy and beautiful, while also thought-provoking and kinda sad. the song is from 2013, but the message gets more important every day (i.e. we can have all the fun, or we can change the world).

but even without the underlying message, the song is amazing, and it's super fun to sing at the top of your lungs "WE COULD GET HIGH!"

I'm not religious, but I've never cared for this. Love their first 5 albums (especially Drums & Wires, Black Sea and English Settlement) but they got kind of boring for me after that. I don't think this, or most of Skylarking, has aged well. It seems like they were trying to force a Sgt. Peppers vibe and it rings hollow to me.

love the song ... and there is a plethora of juicy stuff all over the innerwebs about how much Andy Partridge hated Todd

https://ultimateclassicrock.com/todd-rundgren-xtc-skylarking-feud/

there are some good Todd interviews about it as well ...if you like Jonesy's Jukebox, I seem to recall there was some discussion on it there as well ...

+1 on most of this, though I like Skylarking a lot.  This song has always irritated me, and I'm not religious in the least.  It seems pretty polarizing as I know plenty of people who would agree it's their best song.

We both know more than anyone else on this board that not every single thing he did was perfect.

no doubt, but I really like the album ...and it saved their career ...and since Andy had such a bad case of stage fright and didn't want to perform live ...all he wanted to do is tinker in the studio on whatever album he was working on ...forever.

and he ####ied out and wanted the song off the album ...because he got scared of the whole religion thing

from what I hear Andy has mellowed substantially and admits Todd was right

####in' eh right he was right ... :lmao:

Round 6.11  -  Warren Zevon  -  Veracruz

This was incredibly hard.  I have about a ten-way tie for this.  I almost went with "Roland", but this was the last minute finisher.  By Zevon and Calderón, it is evocative for me.

@Manster is up

@El Floppo on deck
Glad to see Mr. Z finally make an appearance. I would have a difficult choice between "Roland"or "Excitable Boy" or "Reconsider Me" or "Splendid Isolation" or....

ETA- So sad, that he's no longer with us.

Watching Festival now (about Newport Jazz Festival 63-66). While I don't expect many of these artists to be drafted, it's quite an interesting look at a slice of time and the performances are quite good. It's fascinating to see the development of music from Jazz on a Summers Day (Newport Jazz Fest '58) to Festival (63-66) and then Monterey Pop in '67. Seems like evidence of a real inflection point on a generation and a country.

Sometimes, far mor often than you nerds consider, the biggest hit is the biggest hit for a reason. It's the best song.

Lawyer Guns and Money. After that Keep me in Your Heart is in a tier of it's own for obvious reasons. Then I've always been partial to Carmelita. Miss this guy a lot.

I don’t think most of us disagree with that. I think we are either choosing the song that personally resonated with us the most or is our personal favorite or maybe is just a little off the beaten path and we want to highlight it for others.

Love all those songs. I have nothing to back it up but my guess is Werewolves of London was his biggest hit - which is also a great song.
I miss him too and wish I would have seen him play.

I don't want to start a big thing like The Smiths fiasco, but wasn't his biggest hit "Werewolves of London"?
