24-hour headlight use becomes mandatory on US 50

BALTIMORE (AP) The State Highway Administration is requiring that drivers have their vehicles headlights on 24 hours a day while traveling on Route 50 between Route 13 in Wicomico County and MD 90 in Worcester County.

Mandatory headlight use takes effect on Thursday and signs have been installed along the road to alert drivers.

The SHA said in an email that there have been crashes along the corridor and mandatory headlight use on MD 90 has made a difference.

Between 28,000 to 36,000 motorists travel on that part of Route 50 every day.
Daytime running lamps do not count.

If they really wanted to reduce crashes they would forget about headlights and instead mandate installation of a jamming device that rendered all cell phones inoperable unless the vehicle is in park.

Just seems like a shady straightaway, why is it so dangerous?
US 50 is the primary route for people from Annapolis/Western Shore of MD to reach Ocean City. That road can literally be a race track on summer weekends...starting tomorrow.

So we have a U.S. Federal Route that is apparently unsafe. We can upgrade the road to current safety standards, or we can create a new law and fine people who don't comply. Let's go with that. No need to spend federal funds to upgrade our infrastructure.

My headlights on both vehicles are set to automatic. Would I have to dig out the manual and figure out how to adjust this? Oh yeah, then remember to turn them off even though I haven't turned them off since 2006 when I bought the car. Will the Government come out and jumpstart my car?

I think they should pass a federal law that requires all cars to have strobe lights and horns that honk 24/7. I bet that would cut down on accidents, too. Or a federal law that outlaws cars. If they're so dangerous, why can people buy them so easily? Other countries do fine without so many cars. But in America, we seem to be hung up on the "car culture" that is glorified in movies and on TV.

If we're doing anything with headlights, should be to set an upper limit on brightness for some of these after-market ones especially. Some of these things seem to fall between destroying night-vision and full on retina damage if a car with them is behind you.

Yes, if you don't want to get fined and points on your license.

I know that road fairly well. Troopers loved to camp out there and nab everyone going even a hair over the speed limit. My work buddy and I were headed west to DC from OC and got nabbed one.

I think it's often foggy too. Or at least it always seems that way when I drive on the eastern shore.
That too. I lived on Route 404 west of Denton - the race track to Rehobeth and Bethany Beaches. A more dangerous 2 lane road doesn't exist.

They should make a law requiring all new cars to have a six-inch metal spike extending from the steering wheel. That would dramatically reduce the number of accidents.
