Interesting response. A few points:

1) Chalking up as many TO's and aliai as possible isn't interesting to me. I think the sheer absurdity of it used to be amusing, but I see some posters who are continuously getting banned, and it's generally for stupid and/or uninteresting comments. I think I've been given a short timeout either once or twice this year. Although my history is fairly checkered, my current ban-rate is level with other humorous non-choirboys. In that regard, I think the "tool factor", as you put it, has been turned down.

2) Sometimes it's funny to be clever and clean, sometimes it's funny to be absurd/blatant/dirty (see: Bob Sacamano's kamikaze mission earlier this week). I try to reserve comments/topics in the latter for other forums (see: Homer's iCarly thread), and the times when I've blatantly line-stepped over here are fairly few and far-between.

3) All that said, it's hard for me to believe that **** jokes are "destroying" FBG's. I'm not that powerful, nor are **** jokes. On the "ability to destroy FBG's" scale, I think **** jokes are far behind the ideologically-blind political posters, the bigots, and the women. Similarly, it's hard for me to believe that asking Smoo about his smoo'ing someone is contributing to the demise of said forum.
Dear Bovine Encephalitis,I think you've gone through some interesting phases in your time here. Back in the day of !, you were probably targeted unfairly after a few incidents. You got a target on your back, it became personal, and you were iced, bro. In the time since, you have line-stepped a fair amount, but I do agree that your taunting has largely died down. I think the tool factor is at about a 4/10 which is pretty mild.

I agree with you that many of the groups you mentioned are more guilty of "ruining" this place than those who post with an "edgy" style. Werewolf participants were pretty guilty, and fortunately they opted for self-exile. I think the change has been refreshing and noticeable. This makes me wonder about the self-moderated idea mentioned above, and which groups would be voted off the island more quickly. It would be an interesting experiment. I think the white noise generators would probably get the hook pretty quickly, and that would be a good thing.

As to Smoo, he did some Grade A smooing at one point in the past, but I don't think that's been a problem for a while now. Smoomendous Smooside is much more likely to smoo your league than Smoo himself. I think he rightly deserves ire. Actually, I think anyone who pilfers funds or is really slow to pay is worthy of mockery. Smoo is no exception. You do seem to be forgetting that Smoo is an irascible fellow. It doesn't take much to set him off.

All in all, I think you're headed in the right direction. I'd like to see some people get their old names back as I think the practice of banning people and allowing new names is a buncha nonsense. I was pretty partial to Truck IV: A New Hope, though. Maybe you'd be happy with that one?

Hurry in to your Bay Area Buick dealer, because this 0% APR offer won't last long,

MP
I'm all for keeping old names. If there was any way to wipe the slate clean, I'd be all for it.In re: making sure that new threads with awesome potential, I think we could stand to benefit if the OP takes some responsibility in keeping an eye on his or her own thread. For larger threads like the GM thread, responsibility should fall to the person who started a particular topic. The other day in the "Things that won't be allowed in the FFA in 2014" thread, a poster who shall go nameless didn't just line-step, but jumped over the line with both feet. I kindly asked him to delete, as it could be used as a reason to get the thread shut down, and he agreed. Problem solved.

Separate question: Should FBG bring back the use of images in posts? I think it really adds to a forum, and could even have some utility in the Shark Pool.

I think the answer to this is no. Too much added bandwidth, and the odd formatting can make things difficult to read.I would like to see the number of nested quotes increased. It's ruined the ability to read some of the older threads.

Dear Mr. Pickles.

Love your work BTW. Give me a list of posters that you would like to see more posts and list the accompanying following reason:

1) You are intrigued by their viewpoints

2) You are amused by their humor

3) You would like to see the FFA's general reaction

4) Would fill in for you as an ominvourman while you were on holiday

Thanks

Dear Young Sir Robin,...blah blah blah...As an unmuddied lake, Fred. As clear as an azure sky of deepest summer. You can rely on me, Fred,MP
OMG, Pickles. I think I love you. Major  for these two lines in your answer to YSR. You have my vote for this post alone.

Oops... missed this one.Dear Fullback Fro,

There are many posters I would like to see more of. Many of them have moved on, unfortunately.

For viewpoints, I greatly enjoy the work of ratpfink and Alonso de Cordoba. Neither of them post much anymore (if at all), but I love their stuff. It's first rate. I think everyone misses NCCommish. I know he's had some issues to deal with, but I think he is very much missed. We of course still mourn shining path, and it's a shame he's not still around to enlighten us anymore, but he lives on in some of his fantastic posts.

I'd mention Maurile, whom I read nearly every word of, but he's here all the time. I still pronounce his name mor-EEL. Sorry, buddy.

For humor, I think we all miss Vivian Darkbloom. His Colon Blow Diaries were great, and that's how most people know his work, but I don't think it was even his best stuff. He was great during the Smack Off (many years ago) and had some of the best writing around. Maybe the best we've ever seen. Everyone knows my personal internet idol is Magnificent B. Productions. I think he lasted about a week, but how very very brightly he burned. It's also a pity that mojorizn isn't here anymore. He found and lost love due to a peanut allergy discussion, and I think that's about the only way to live these days.

Nips and Cappy are two guys that need to be here in their old forms. They're a shell of their former selves. I'd like to see what John Martinez can arrange there. Maybe have Fermi make some calls. There are some posters who pretty much forced this to happen, and those people should be ashamed of themselves.

Not sure what you mean by the third category. Posters that shake things up? Clarify, please.

As for vice ombudsman, I think bostonfred would be terrific. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of shtick and will probably be here until they pull the plug.

There are many more people that I could (and probably should) name, but this is a lot of work and I'm working pro bono for now.

We really need more Fullback Fro (and Bro) around here. Seriously, you do a bang up job. Thank you for your question.

Glad to see that you and the thread are completely undead Mr. P - I realize it was touch and go for a while there.

Figured this may have escaped your attention - don't know if you have to do any ombudsing there or not.

Linky

Now that I think about are you just the Ombudsguy for the FFA or for all the forums?

Cheers

First I've heard of this "Shark Pool."

Hey Mr. P, first time, long time. If I "remove friend" somebody here do they get a notification like they do when you "add friend"?

Thanks, I'll hang up and listen.

I think the answer to this is no. Too much added bandwidth, and the odd formatting can make things difficult to read.
What bandwidth? Did they ever host images here?
Long load times for the embedded images.
That's not FBG issue. Typically image hosting sites throttle the bandwitdth of hotlinkers or ban them altogether sometimes by inserting a "Don't hotlink this" image instead of what you wanted to display. The no image thing is what makes this site ok for many. Lots of forums have seemingly normal threads bombed with stuff from wwttd deadspin and tmz which can be frowned upon in many IT departments.

Bob...I just added you as a friend and then removed you as a friend.Did you get any sort of notification of either transaction?

In no way shape or form do I believe this...but if this message board was a movie, the ending would reveal that Mr. Pickles was just a JB alias all this time.

That said...can we get rid of the "MP" sign-off to each post?

It irks me to no end. Otherwise, keep up the good work.

I don't think you're following here. I'm not saying it's a bandwidth issue for the FBG servers, I'm saying it's annoying to have 200 images load on a page in some pics posting thread. Additionally, it's a pain to sort through the ones that should be deleted and some may not be safe for work.

Dear SLB,I don't know.I hope this helps,MP
I appreciate the time. I guess there is only one way to find out.Follow up question, if something was broadcast over the air is it alright to link it here? It wasn't on XM, Sirius, Internet or any other means. We're talking actual FCC governed radio.

There was a two week period back in April of '03 when images were allowed. That was before Cruiser and TANAC decided to post random photos of power tools in stupid political threads. Personally, I thought they were geniuses.

I remember Maurile posting an absurdly large pic of Britney Spears.I also recall linked pics of power tools getting people banned. I guess that was filed under "taunting?"

Will there be any more of the lengthy columns like you wrote last week, or should we just expect the ombudsman to be responding briefly to questions and running shtick from now on? Either one is fine, i just want to adjust my expectations accordingly.

Dear Elbow Truck Driver,I will probably write columns as needed (and time allows). Are you happy with the Q&A sessions? Do they not entertain you?MP
