THIS SUMMER! (2 Viewers)

Franz Nicolay (keys) has left The Hold Steady. Not sure how I feel about this. He was a bit of a distraction live but I like what the keyboard/piano sounds added to their last 2 albums.

This actually bummed me out but I'm interested to see which way the band goes now.I thought he was excellent live. He poured me champagne on New Year's Eve at the House of Blues in Chicago a couple years back. I'll still follow him as a musician. He seems like quite the character.

Hold Steady Tour Dates

Friday February 5, 2010

The Hold Steady will be returning to the road in April for a two-week tour of the Northeast. The band don't have a new album to promote -- unless you count their 2009 live record, A Positive Rage -- but there will be something different about these shows: They'll be the bar-band rockers' first gigs since the departure of longtime keyboardist Franz Nicolay in January. It's unclear if a new member will be replacing Nicolay in the Hold Steady, but we do know that the Oranges Band will be opening on these dates.

The Hold Steady Tour Dates:

* Apr. 2 - Ardsley, NY - LIFE

* Apr. 3 - New Haven, CT - Toad's Place

* Apr. 6 - Northampton, MA - Pearl Street

* Apr. 7 - Albany, NY - Linda Norris Auditorium

* Apr. 8 - Woodstock, NY - Bearsville Theater

* Apr. 9 - Jermyn, PA - Eleanor Rigby's

* Apr. 10 - Syracuse, NY - The Westcott Theater

* Apr. 12 - Rochester, NY - The Club at Water Street Music Hall

* Apr. 13 - Cleveland, OH - Beachland Ballroom

* Apr. 14 - Pittsburgh, PA - Diesel Club Lounge

* Apr. 15 - Morgantown, WV - 123 Pleasant Street

* Apr. 16 - Harrisburg, PA - Appalachian Brewing Company

Harrisburg PA was already sold out:goodposting:How about playing your hometown here, people?
Are you in NYC? If so, Ardsley NY looks much closer than Harrisburg. And New Haven is a 1 hour 40 minute ride on the MTA North away.This is an interesting group of cities that they are touring.

Rust Belt Tour 2010!Yeah, was a combination of location and datesI will be in Florida until April 12th, so the Harrisburg date was perfect, especially since buddies from Md wanted to see them also and HBurg was between usC'est la vie

I really hope these guys come out West but I'd head back to Minneapolis to see them play First Avenue or hit Chicago. Haven't seen them since 2008(?) in Boulder and damn do I love seeing The Hold Steady live.

Report back, you lucky ones, about how they sound sans Franz.

New Album "Heaven is Whenever" Available May 3 in the UK and EU / May 4 in the US

The Hold Steady recently put the finishing touches on ‘Heaven Is Whenever,’ their new album set for release May 4th on Vagrant Records and May 3rd on Rough Trade in the UK and EU. The album was produced by Dean Baltulonis, who engineered the band’s ‘Almost Killed Me’ and produced ‘Separation Sunday,’ and was recorded at Dreamland Recording Studios in Upstate NY and Wild Arctic Studios in Queens, NY, with mixing also happening at Wild Arctic.

Singer Craig Finn says ’Heaven Is Whenever’ is about “embracing suffering and finding reward in our everyday lives.” Piano and keys take a backseat to guitar on the new record, which also gets production help from guitarist Tad Kubler.

Recorded in several smaller sessions spread out over a long period of time, the songs on ‘Heaven Is Whenever’ received the benefit of being tested on the band’s recent tours. As Finn says this allowed them to “see what was working and what wasn’t. I believe this record benefits from us working at a more deliberate pace.”

The tracklisting for Heaven Is Whenever is:

They opened up some more tix for the Harrisburg show after all, and I am PUMPED to see them in such a small venue

http://www.abcbrew.com/abbey/img/abbey_stage.jpg

Looks cozy

Also eager to hear the new album

Some live performances of the title track have been on youtube for a couple of months

Sounds pretty solid
Friday night show, with the Nats AA affiliate at home that weekend. A quick trip up I-83 might be in the works here, since the guys aren't coming to DC this time around.

:thumbup: It was such a good plan, too. Hitting up the only two things in this world that I love and my wife hates, in the same weekend.

So, if Strasburg pitches that weekend at home for the Senators, does that make Harrisburg, PA the greatest hotspot in America for one magical weekend?

I think it does.

Those tix might be as hard to get as the HS tix. I agree though, it would be a sweet 2fer.

Looking at their schedule, I think it's a lock that he will pitch that weekend, or at least that Thursday. You'd expect him to pitch in their opener, but that would mean two straight road games for him, and the Nats will want to give their affiliate the ticket sales boost. So they'll wait a couple days to start him so that he pitches at home in his second start and probably his third start as well. Thursday or Friday is pretty likely. Maybe Saturday, if they want him to pitch during the day in his first start then give him rest.

I might have to make a trip north for the twofer, if I can find a HS ticket.

The hype for Strasburg is going to be through the roof. I definitely want to catch him in at least one game before he's gone.

There are currently 10 ads on craigslist for HS tix. All are "wanted" ads. One guy offering $100. :lmao:

I'd say buy tickets for Thursday and Friday when they go on sale and you're virtually a lock to catch his first game there. Just makes too much sense to have two of his first three in Harrisburg- why give some other minor league club the added revenue?

I'm not above $100 for an excuse to catch HS and Strasburg in the minors in the same trip. One or the other, not so much. But I think the wife would give me a pass for that combo. Just gotta talk someone into making the trip with me.

Update- nailed this prediction. Strasburg's debut is April 11 in order to set him up for home games on April 16 - the same night as The Hold Steady- and April 21. Making Harrisburg, for one night, the coolest place on earth. Now to look for tickets, then get the wife to give me a weekend pass ...

Seriously outstanding Hold Steady show last night. They have added two new members - a third guitarist and a keyboardist to replace Franz. They sounded amazing. Seriously rocked out. My ears are still ringing.

It was an incredibly energetic show. Craig Finn is the most unlikely looking rock star, yet he has the charisma to have the audience wrapped around his finger. The band is tight as hell, all the songs are improved live.

They played a nice mix of new and old songs. The energy subsided a bit for the new tunes b/c the audience didn't know all the words and because two of them seemed ballad-y, but after hearing them live I'm looking forward to what will no doubt be another great record. "Weekenders" in particular killed live.

Set list:

Rock Problems

Magazines

You Can Make Him Like You

Hot Soft Light

Constructive Summer

Navy Sheets

Chips Ahoy!

Chicago Seemed Tired Last Night

The Swish

Party Pit

Massive Nights

Bangin' Camp

Soft In The Center

Sequestered in Memphis

Hurricane J

We Get Together

Hoodrat

The Weekenders

Stuck Between stations

Slight Discomfort

Encore:

Hornets! Hornets!

Stay Positive

Killer Parties

Thanks for the review! Can't wait to see 'em again on May 29th.

Just scored a couple to THS show at the Beacon Theater in October

That's a big step up for the boy, actually playing legit venues instead of bars and small gen adm plaxces

It's funny, there is a LOT of sentiment on THS boards that they don't want the band to get too big and play big places

Pumped for seeing them in Harrisburg in one week

I'll definitely be at The Ogden show. Possibly making a trip to the Twin Cities for July 3rd/July 4th but that's probably a long shot. :stoked:

A guy I know from Minnesota has never heard of the Hold Steady. Likes Husker Du, Replacements, etc., but no exposure to tHS.

With all of the references to the area (Golden Gophers, etc.). Apparently Penetration Park is actually Loring Park - not sure if that's a local nickname for it or not.

Can any MN locals call out some specific songs with MN references? I'd like a short list of songs for him to check out.

"Southtown Girls" is the first one to come to mind. Also "Stuck Between Stations", "Party Pit", and "Stevie Nix".
