THIS SUMMER! (2 Viewers)

A guy I know from Minnesota has never heard of the Hold Steady. Likes Husker Du, Replacements, etc., but no exposure to tHS.With all of the references to the area (Golden Gophers, etc.). Apparently Penetration Park is actually Loring Park - not sure if that's a local nickname for it or not.Can any MN locals call out some specific songs with MN references? I'd like a short list of songs for him to check out.
"Southtown Girls" is the first one to come to mind. Also "Stuck Between Stations", "Party Pit", and "Stevie Nix".
Add "Hornets, Hornets", "Your Little Hoodrat Friend", "Multitude of Casualties", "Don't Let Me Explode", "Chicago Seemed Tired Last Night", "How A Resurrection Really Feels", "The Sweet Part Of The City", "Sweet Payne" (! - If you're from St. Paul, well, you know), "The Swish", "Yeah Sapphire", and "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" (if you've heard their cover) come to mind right away. There may be more but I'd have to jam out for a while to think of them.

:lmao:They were awesome in MSP last weekendI kinda like their more guitar driven sound now without Franz and with the addiiton of another guitaristSome sick Kubler work on Lord, I'm Discouraged last week

Every time this thread gets bumped I get all excited thinking that they filled out that fall tour schedule, hopefully including a show or two in DC.

What did you think about The Whigs? I've been a fan but haven't seen them since '07.
As stated I knew none of their material going in, but they impressed me both nightsVery energetic live showCouldn't tell you what they played, didn't play, etc, but I enjoyed both shows by themThey also had some awesome Twins/Braves World Series shtick going for the Saturday night showLead singer finally accepted that the Twins beat them, and he put on a twins T SHirt for a songGood, fun live band

The Hold Steady might be my favorite band in the world. :goodposting:

Had a great time Saturday. Only complaint is that the vocals were kinda buried. Anyone who didn't already know all the songs had no chance at picking up many lyrics.

Setlist:

1. The Sweet Part of the City

2. Rock Problems

3. You Can Make Him Like You

4. Barfruit Blues

5. Constructive Summer

6. Multitude of Casualties

7. Stevie Nix

8. Ask Her for Adderall

9. Hurricane J

10. The Swish

11. Barely Breathing

12. Sequestered in Memphis

13. Joke About Jamaica

14. The Smidge

15. We Can Get Together

16. Stuck Between Stations

17. Hot Soft Light

18. Chips Ahoy!

19. Massive Nights

20. A Slight Discomfort

21. Encore:

21. Hornets! Hornets!

22. The Weekenders

23. Stay Positive

The Whigs' bass player wasn't there due to a death in the family. Luckily The Hold Steady's touring manager is a bass player, so he filled in for the five songs they worked on earlier in the day. Randomly he wrote the bass parts for their second album, since they were between bassists at the time.

The lead singer did quieter versions of one song from each album first, plus a great cover of Sparklehorse's "Painbirds". He said it was his first time "doing the singer/songwriter thing", but it was pretty cool. Then the fill-in bassist and their kick-### drummer came out for some face rocking. :goodposting:

I love when I'm reading a book and catch a cross-reference to another book that I've read, or in this case, a song I've heard. I was reading On The Road by Jack Kerouac last night when the main character, Sal Paradise, says "Boys and girls in America have such a sad time together."

"There are nights when I think Sal Paradise was right. Boys and Girls in America have such a sad time together"

I went out and bought/read this book based solely on The Hold Steady references to it on BAGIA :lmao:

You can't get every girl

You get the ones you love the best

You won't get every girl

You love the ones you get the best

This is good advice. Probably a song I should listen to more often. Maybe even make it my ringtone.
