San Diego is experiencing a lot of bad fires. The Chargers have canceled practice today. They may move to Arizona for the week to practice. Sunday's game may be moved. Not sure where. The air quality is bad. Qualcomm stadium is being used as an evacuation center.

LT, other Chargers among wildfire evacuees

Reigning NFL MVP LaDainian Tomlinson was among several San Diego Chargers players, coaches and staff members who had to evacuate their homes as wildfires burned in San Diego County.

The Chargers, who had just returned from their bye weekend, canceled practice Monday. Players were dismissed so they could take care of families, spokesman Bill Johnston said.

As of late Monday morning, wildfires fanned by fierce desert winds forced the evacuations of nearly 250,000 people in San Diego County.

Johnston said it was too early to know if the fires will affect Sunday's scheduled home game against the Houston Texans at Qualcomm Stadium, where the parking lot was being used as an evacuation center.

Four years ago to the week, the Chargers had to move a home Monday night game to Phoenix on short notice because the Qualcomm parking lot was being used as an evacuation center during deadly wildfires.

Tomlinson's business manager, Lamar Andrews, said he checked on the player at 5 a.m. and he and his wife had already left their home in suburban Poway. Andrews said two other players he represents, safety Marlon McCree and linebacker Matt Wilhelm, also evacuated their homes.

Johnston said others in the organization were evacuated.

Just curious, is this pure speculation due to changing practice locations, or do you have inside info? It's 6 days away, so they should be able to get the fires under control by then

I remember this happening before in 2003 I think. Miami and San Diego ended up playing in Arizona in a game with free admission. I wonder if the NFL will do that again.

I am not familiar with these fires, but in the past these fires can burn for days and weeks. Didn't a game get moved to AZ last year or the year before??

It was on the radio. They did have to move the game for similar reasons in 2003.

Dry winds for the next few days. All of SoCal is burnig right now. It's impossible to say when they'll get them contained. As soon as they get one area out, embers start up other ones. Up here in LA there's a 7 mile fireline that's spreading because all the firefighters were trying to conatin Malibu when this new one started. One's burning in Anaheim. Additionally, if homes are destroyed or areas are unsafe and the Q is still a shelter, they're not gonna kick people out for a game. Last time there was a fire in SD they moved the MNF game to AZ and let people in for free. Of course the flames were literally licking on the hill behind the stadium. Dunno if the Cards play at home this weekend. Other possibilities are the Coliseum and Rose Bowl. Neither of which are in any danger of fires and there's no possible way for the Coliseum to ever be in danger of wild fires. Riot fires are another story. Could also play it in Houston like the Katrina Saints did in NY, though there seemed to be some neg feedback on giving a team an extra home game. Maybe they could move it to Germany...

It's been the driest year on record here, the whole Southern Empire is tinder and the hot dry winds are a nightmare for containment. They're not going to die down for a few more days. And if it's a rainy winter, mudslides galore. A lot of damage this year. Welcome to SoCal, stnadby for the earthquakes

Here'sa satellite view. You can see the Cal-Mex dotted line border. The big group of red dots right above the border is obviously SD. The top left is Malibu and to thr right of it is the fire burning just NE of LA.

From reading more stories about the SD area fires, this looks like it'll be the worst fire in county history. "An exraordinarily serious fire event, an extraordinarily dangerous fire event."

Things are really bad in San Diego right now, my thoughts and prayers go out to the families involved in this crisis

Cards aren't scheduled to host a game till Nov. 11th. I could see this game being moved here like the Dolphins game from a couple of years ago. Hopefully, they wouldn't give tickets away for free again..the level of riff raff at that game was astounding.

Not sure if this has been brought to the attention of the Shark Pool or not but the SD chargers are planning on practicing in Arizona for the week or until the wildfires in San Diego are under control.

Due to poor air quality caused by the San Diego wildfires, the Chargers announced Monday afternoon that they’ll fly to Tempe, Arizona on Tuesday to practice on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. They’ll use the Arizona Cardinals’ practice facility to prepare for their Week 8 contest against the Houston Texans.
The fact that a number of players and their families have been evacuated from their homes this could be a major distraction come this Sunday. I know in a time like this when people are being forced from their homes and they are burning to the ground that FF can not seem so important but there are some die hards out there that probably want to know this stuff.

dude, I've got news for you --- every day something bad's happening to somebody.a lot of the time you just don't hear about it.

I heard today that the game will NOT be moved to University of Phoenix stadium. Not sure why or why not, but that's what they said on the radio.

the latest word out here is that the Chargers will more than likely not be able to play their game in SD because Qualcomm Stadium could be used as an evacuation shelter again.

The University Of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale is being rented by the Super Bowl Committee, so it won't be available either.

The Chargers could end up playing this game at Sun Devil Stadium

Having lived through wild fires several years ago I doubt they will be "under control" in 6 days.

Drunken Co-Eds in downtown Tempe! NOT! Never appreciated the $50.00 ticket price until I went to the free game a few years ago because of the fires. Every rock must have been turned over to drag out the drunk, fighting foulmouth idiots that could care less about football that found their way to the stadium that night. If they are willing to use a college venue, take it to Northern Cal.

If that place is still burning six days from now the problem isn't the fires, It's the people who control the fires!

This weekend is my annual trip out to San Diego to see the Chargers. I was taking the girlfriend with me this year to see some of the sites. I heard early reports that they were expecting the fires to go for another 2 days, and since I dont get out there til Thursday I didnt view it as a problem. Is that overly optimistic? Having never been through fires there, is it really bad along the beach/downtown areas?

My heart and prayers go out to the people of San Diego, and hope all our fellow FBGs are safe and sound.

This always kills me. My heart goes out to all of the people affected in SD as well. But seriously, does "God" really need our fickle prayers in order to be persuaded to get involved and take care of business? If so, really, what kind of god does our society really look up to?In any event -- I seem to recall this happened a couple years ago as well. I think I remember there being two Sunday or Monday night games because SD had to move a game to Arizona and play at night. I remember being really ticked off that the game WOULD have been on Sunday ticket if played at the scheduled time, but was completely unavailable to anyone outside of the local markets at the newly schedule time. I hope the NFL has fixed this telecasting loophole.

Dude relax, if you don't have faith no need to criticise others that do. Not sure this is the best thread to discuss the possible merits of prayer and what it means to people. So hopefully we can just leave it at that.

They have people and equipment from as far away as Georgia facing wrath of nature hot winds gusting up to 80mph. Only a let up in the wind will let them get it under control. Some things are bigger than us.

I don't think I criticized anyone Coryell and I certainly didn't mean to come off as critical of anyone in particular if I did. I guess my intention for the first comment was to be more thought-provoking than anything else. The rest of my post I think was very applicable to this thread.
