Thoughts on Cedric Benson for this year and beyond (1 Viewer)

On the other hand Benson was the fourth overall pick(I know Jones was the 7th overall in the 2000 draft) and the bears are not going to let him ride the bench.

Man, Im so sick of hearing this as an argument. Benson will ride the bench if the coaches feel like they have a better shot at winning games with Jones. Its as simple as that
I like that you depict one aspect of my arguement when I had at least 5 good points in there. But it is a fact of life, that if you bought a brand new car, but the old one is still performing, that you would in fact drive the new car.
And if the car refused to start, stalled when it did start and generally was a pain in the rear you would give it back to the dealer. The arguement doesn't hold any water. They won't start him JUST because he's the 'new car' as you put it.

They'll start him if he shows up and earns it.

I'm not saying Benson can't or won't wrest the job away from Jones - indeed if he applies himself and has a better attitude this season and Jones keeps whining and decides to hold out, he'll have the job in no time.

But they ain't about to start him because he's 'shiny and new'.

shiny and new! :lmao: seriously tho, I think the previous post was trying to say that the Bears are cheap, they pay Benson a lot of money to ride the pine, and that could be a big factor in decisions down the road in regards to playing time. Eventually, he HAS to get a shot at it, they didn't spend a high pick for a backup player.

outside of money and the high draft selection used for Benson, the other points are:

we might not be talking about TJ at all,had Benson NOT held out last year. He would've most likely won the job outright, IMO..

TJ has never shown to be durable , and consistently has missed games during the course of his career.. He also has played for 3 different teams in just six pro seasons..you have to wonder why 2 other teams have let him go, and why he hasn't been a starter elsewhere. you also wonder why Chicago would even draft Benson when they had TJ coming off his best season as a pro...

I have a question. I enjoy scouting RBs, and even though I saw Benson play a million times at Texas, I still don't have a good feel for what he'll bring to the table. We've seen RBs of all shapes and sizes have success running behind those mammoth Longhorn offensive lines.

What I'm wondering is, how would Benson compare to Larry Johnson? Could he even be considered a poor man's LJ? Benson is certainly no burner, but I don't remember anyone talking about Johnson's breakaway speed coming out of Penn State. How do they compare physically, and how would you compare their running styles? Benson seems to be the between-the-tackles hammer the Bears want, and LJ is also a pretty physical runner. But is Johnson a lot more "nifty" than Benson?

TIA
