Three stud RBs (1 Viewer)

Brewdude

Footballguy
Through a trade I pulled off in my 3-man keeper, I now have 3 of the top 10 RBs on my roster. To complicate things, they all have the same bye...so it's not like I'll have one fill in during a bye. I'm intentionally leaving names out so as to avoid the "wrong forum" or "you play in a 4-team league?" (It's 12 teams).

My WRs are average and my b/u QB is scary (in a bad way).

My delimma is do I try to pull off trades now or do I wait until the season starts? Or, do I just sit on this incredible RB line up when I can only start two and, barring injury, I know the 3rd RB will never see the field. Seems stupid to me to have a top 10 RB and never start him, but I also don't want to just give him away.

I'm concerned about teams avoiding me or lowballing me because giving me a stud WR would make my team very tough.

What's the smart move? Anyone ever been in this position before?

I'd try to make the trade. Having a stud on your bench does you zero good. Find an owner out of your division (assuming you have divisions) and see how much value you can get. Bonus points if you can trade with a weak team who even with the RB isn't a serious threat to win it all.

This is a tough one.

What *I* would do, it being this close to the season opener, and no major RB injuries having occurred (yet), is stand pat. There is simply too much going on right now - and too much RB glut in the mid-rounds - to make a move. The opposite theory (trade now and build a competitive team from day one) is just as good - it is just not what *I* would do.

Plus (and this has no logic), it seems like every year one big name RB has a tremendous injury in either the last preseason or one of the first two games of the season. If that injury happens to one of your starting RBs, you will regret having traded away your third, and if it happens to another team's starting RB, you have just gained some good leverage in a trade. With some RBs sitting/not playing much until game one (see Portis, Dom Davis, LT2, Edge), after game one will give a better read on which RBs are truly the ones you want to keep and which to trade.

I'd rather risk losing my first couple of head to head games by holding a glut at RB and seeing how the season starts to shake out - for me, the season really settles down after game two and not during the preseason.

The number of top WRs with question marks is a double edged sword - will you get the player you thought you traded for while his value is at a low, or will you have paid a high price on hopes of a stud WR that never pans out (and now your traded away RB is blowing up on another guy's team).

Finally, if you really have a multitude of needs, the currently RB-starved team will probably still be RB-starved in two weeks, and more willing to shake it up after an 0-2 start over a current 0-0 record.

Hadn't thought about this. The owner saying "I'm giving up too much in that deal" may change his tune when he's 0-2 and has to change something to start winning.I'm leaning toward sitting on them, but it's hard to do with so much potential and the possibility of pulling a top 5 WR in to compliment the other two RBs.

Really the answer is simple:

wait...

Start strong, and find the team that starts poorly. If they have something you like, offer a less than value trade, and let them come back to you with a counter offer.

If they counter, they want to trade. If not, move on to the next team and repeat the process...

Never offer fair value, always wait to see what they reply (offer, or rejection) and work from the bottom up..

GL!

I am in a similar position. It's tough for teams to look past your team, and realize that they are going to improve their team. At least with the guys in my leagues. If I were you, I'd keep in mind that you're dealing from a position of power. If you don't get a fair offer, at the very least that stud RB will never hurt your team. Sit back, and let the season happen. There's no rush.

Consider offering one of them to a team you (hopefully) beat in the first couple of weeks. That way you let a losing owner panic and you won't have to face that RB until much later in the year, if at all.

By what is described, you don't have a flex position to start the 3rd RB. I would stand pat. Quite often, a WR rises out of nowhere from being a WR2 or WR3 and does well. You might also want to see what some really solid "potential" WRs are out there who might be traded for but w/o giving up your RB or what might be available as a FA. Without letting us know who your players are, it is a little bit difficult to recommend beyond this because maybe your view of your WRs are different from what others think. I was in a similar position, but my 3rd RB was not a top 10 (top 15 actually) with the other 2 I kept being top 10. So I traded it away for a top 7 WR.

I play in a start 2 RB, 1 Flex league. This league is only 8 teams, so I ALWAYS get 4 RB's I consider to be top 15 or so. 3 to start, one "just in case". Won me the title last year as I picked McAllister first and Jordan as my "just in case" back. How many guys that you know took McAllister and Culppeper with their first two picks and went on to win the championship? Quality depth is so important in football. People get hurt every year.

You are virtually guaranteed quality depth in an eight team league regardless of your "skill level". I'm pretty sure you arent the only owner with an abundance of quality runningbacks.

You're not always dealing from a position of strength with more top RBs than you can start. Every year, we see the "I'm loaded at RB & can't find a taker" threads pop up around week 4. On top of that, what if the loaded owner starts slow? All of a sudden, his supposed strength is an anchor: he doesn't have balance, he's wasted a high pick, and if he's talked trash about being RB-heavy it'll make people even less likely to trade with him. Especially if the league has a short season (12-13 weeks), starting 1-2 or 0-3 can be fatal.

I really think the ability to hit the jackpot with a bunch of stud RBs is overplayed. I'd rather be balanced out of the gate than have to depend on someone on another team getting hurt or underperforming to finally get some value out of the pick. That having been said, if you can't get what you think is value right now you're probably better off waiting for a week or two.

I'm being very careful to not say anything in this league that could be considered as me thumpin' my chest...don't want to burn those bridges.

I'm not desperate for a WR, b/u QB, or week 3 RB, but I would like someone like CJ, Fitz or Wayne. I've put word out that Jordan is on the block for a top WR, but no bites yet. Trying to play it low key, but also letting people know he's out there. I made one offer for Fitz that was rejected because the owner felt he was giving up too much.

The more I think about it, the more I think I can sit tight and wait for a couple weeks into the season. That said, I have to be careful because I personally think Jordan will have a down year and I want to unload him before too long.

It's a fine line to walk between being patient and being stupid.

Full roster w/ number of starters in parentheses:

QB(1) - Hasselbeck, BJohnson

RB(2) - LT, LJ, Jordan, TBell, MAnderson, Jacobs, Hicks

WR(3) - Muhammed, Galloway, Engram, Edwards, Bryant

TE(1) - McMichael, Troupe

K(1) - Vandy

D(1) - Miami

I'd keep him. You never know where the top 10 will shake out and everyone has a tweak in the season... (almost everyone).

WHat would you really be gaining...

---w/o knowing who's who this is likely bad advice. Why wouldn't you mention the names and post in the ACF? You'd get better advice.

Because I was hoping the thread would be more about strategy of sitting on a strong position or trading it right away.I didn't want it to go to "I think you should do this..." I wanted it to be "when I've had a strong RBs, I did this, and this is how it turned out."Strategic, not tactical discussions...

The bottom line is this is a blatant WDIS thread that doesn't belong in the Shark Pool.....
Forum police is boring shtick. Leave it to the mods and find something more entertaining.

I believe in having the best starting lineup possible so would look to move one of the guys. If you don't get an offer you like, then wait until the season starts and move one of them, either way you should be in good shape.

Would be nice if we can leave the forum policing up to the moderators, if someone wants to police the forums then try to become a mod.

Was in a similar situation last year...........Was 1st yr of a Keep 3 league.

I drafted Edge, SJax, and then in the third I didn't like the WRs avail so I took BPA which was Brian Westbrook.

We only start 2 rbs.....with no flex.

I struggled and ended up with a .500 record, but squeaked into our playoffs and got bounced in the 1st round.

All last yr and this offseason, I was looking to trade one of them.

Most counter offers were weak.......they came back asking for Edge and SJax when I was proposing BW for a good wr.

Finally.......after the 3-way trade in the NFL between ATL-DEN-Wash.........it got me to thinking.

I found a team with weak keepers and sent him BW.

The weak team sent a pick to Team C.

Team C sent Boldin to me, which he couldn't keep anyway.

We're all satisfied,......but now the only thing I have to worry about is having AZ Cardinal's Edge and Boldin......but I know this could turn out in my favor.

So, to the OP........I say start throwing out offers NOW..........and expect to get weak counters back.........that way, when you REALLY start the season and one of these guys comes back to you........you won't have to "convince" him to do the trade. Plant the seed now......watch it grow.

sit and wait till you can negotiate an offer and say "I cannot turn this down".

Good luck,

JAA

If you can live with playing only one RB during that bye week, you accomplish two things:

1. Yu have great insurance in case one of your other two go down.

2. You keep other rosters weaker.

Had a similar situation in my up to 3 player keeper league. I had SA, Ronnie Brown, and Rudi Johnson. It's start 1 RB, 2 WR and 1 flex, so at most 2 RBs in one week. I wrestled with the try and trade or keep the 3 and seemingly have nice RB depth. I ended up trading RJ for Fitz and moved from 4.12 to 4.2 (most people didn't have rounds 1-3 due to keepers). The guy had 3 really good receivers though so it was a good trade for both.

I won the league last year but my WRs were pretty average and I decided I wanted a top level guy.

Interesting...don't think I've ever seen a 3-way FF trade go down, but it's an interesting concept. I can already think of a good scenario in our league for this and I'm not looking at rosters right now.

I tried to move BW straight up for R.Wayne.....no dice from that owner.Tried to move BW straight up for either Holt or Fitz.......also no dice from that owner.I EVEN tried to move BW straight up for Boldin.........but that owner liked his other 3 keepers. Why didn't the Boldin owner just trade directly with the weak team? ......plus the weak team needed a RB as he has D.Davis.

Sit tight, man.

I ended up with Holmes, Tiki, LJ and Mcallister last year. Thats 3 top 10 and a necessary handcuff. I needed the depth due to injuries to Priest and Deuce.

You can never heve too much depth at RB in FFB, especially in a keeper.

Just want to throw in another little thing to chew on here...

If you have all your "studs" out on the same bye week, that also means that you don't have a real weakness in other weeks. It happened by accident to a team in my league last year where they were without their stud RBs (2) and WR and TE all in a single week. Of course, they lost that week. But every other week they were fielding a dominant team and most of that time they were facing a team that was missing one of their key players. This is kind of a "throw in the towl one week for a vicotry every other week". I don't know if it works as a strategy, but it did last year for this one team (which like I said was by accident).

That said, I would try to deal my RB#3 when you need to (or maybe a week before) to keep your depth, because in many pools RBs will win the league for you. The only caveat here is if you get a great offer before then (like a top 5 WR or Gates or something).
