Tigers - Marlins working on HUGE trade (1 Viewer)

The Marlins, stalled in their attempts to trade third baseman Miguel Cabrera, could be laying the groundwork for an even bigger deal.

The Marlins and Tigers are engaged in preliminary talks about a blockbuster that would send Cabrera and left-hander Dontrelle Willis to Detroit for a package of young players, according to major-league sources.

Outfielder Cameron Maybin and left-hander Andrew Miller likely are among the Marlins' targets. The Tigers already feature two veteran left-handed starters, Kenny Rogers and Nate Robertson, possibly making Miller available in a deal for Willis.

ESPN Insider now reporting it:

John (Atlanta): How about this rumor I just heard... Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to the Tigers for Andrew Miller, Cameron Maybin, and somebody else? Thoughts?

Rob Neyer: (12:25 PM ET ) Yeah, that's the hot one right now. I sure like the deal from the Marlins' perspective, though I liked the supposed deal with the Angels more.

I find this a little hard to believe -- not that its being reported but that its being discussed seriously by the teams.

What is Miggy's contract status?

From the Detroit News:

Source: Cabrera not part of Tigers-Marlins trade talks

Lynn Henning / The Detroit News

NASHVILLE -- A source familiar with discussions between the Tigers and Florida Marlins has denied that Miguel Cabrera is part of trade talks between the two clubs.

A report on foxsports.net said a trade involving Cabrera, a powerful right-hand hitter and third baseman, and left-hand pitcher Dontrelle Willis, was being discussed with the Tigers, who would offer superstar prospects Cameron Maybin and Andrew Miller.

Tigers executives were in meetings Tuesday on the second day of baseball's Winter Meetings at the Opryland Resort and Convention Center and could not be reached for comment.

Cabrera, 24, had 31 home runs and 119 RBIs for the Marlins in 2007. He batted .320. Regarded as one of baseball's highest-echelon young hitters, the cash-strapped Marlins have been offering Cabrera in trade talks that had centered heavily on the Los Angeles Angels.

The Tigers have indicated they will not trade Maybin, a speedy and powerful 20-year-old outfielder, who was Detroit's first-round draft choice in 2005. The Tigers have been almost as adamant in saying that Miller, their 2006 first-round pick and, in tandem with Maybin two of their two most prized prospects, would be traded.

The Tigers, however, have a background with Cabrera. It was Al Avila, the Tigers' assistant general manager, who signed Cabrera when he worked for the Marlins and for Dave Dombrowski, then the Marlins GM who is now president and GM of the Tigers.

Gammons reporting deal will be done tonight. Cabrera and Willis for Maybin, Miller, and two prospects that I didn't catch.

Tigers get the better of this deal slightly, I think. Maybin and Miller are great prospects, though, but they're getting two established players who aren't even 26 yet in return.

Wow is the best as I can put it. Heard about this earlier but didn't think that it had a real chance of getting done. Very impressive for the Tigers to get this done quickly.

I agree..Dontrel is a perfect fit with the stadium and the line-up he has. He's going to chew innings up and keep the shaky bullpen rested. My only concern is Cabrera's weight. Other than that I think it's a fantastic deal. 2 unproven yet highly skilled players for 2 proven highly skilled players. It's a no-brainer

All but done with dotting the "i"s and crossing the "t"s ....

Cabrera and D-Train for Maybin, Miller and 4 prospects.... 6 for 2 deal

A shame I am not a Tigers fan, because I would be extremely happy.

BTW the Yankees and Sox should use this as an example for how to get a deal done with Santana. If I am the Twins I look at this deal and compare it to what I am being offered, and tell everyone to pound sand.

Cabrera is going to be a great fit in that lineup, he is an unbelievable pure hitter. But Willis is one of the most overrated pitchers in the game.

Tigers would have been better off just going for Cabrera and seeing if they could keep one of Miller and Maybin. WIllis is an average pitcher.

That line-up is easily the best in baseball and the staff is pretty good. Maybin hurts me but a long-term deal to Cabrera will cure me.

This is a great deal for Detroit. Nice work.
And a great deal for Florida. They are accumulating some solid talent on O. Marc Jacobs (if he ever stays healthy), Jeremy Hermida, Hanley Ramirez, Dan Uggla, and now add Maybin. Pretty nice young nucleus. The pitching showed so much promise, but is a pretty big question mark, with injuries.

I really like that 2-3-4. Polanco is going to score a ton of runs.

Extremely solid team all around, they should have as good a chance as anyone next year

That is an unbelievable team. Wow!

Is this trade and looking at this team, enough to get the Sox, Angels, and Yankees into a real bidding war for Santana?????

Maybin, Miller, Ribelo, and 3 prospects is the latest on ESPN.
Ribello was expendable but he's got upside. Still waiting to see what the other two/three were. Hopefully it's two and they are lower in the pecking order. Hope it's not Trahern or Sizemore.

I'm going to gues one of the guys is Larish since he's blocked with Guillen moving to 1st.
I might as well make the Marlins my NL team now.

Just reported on ESPN that prospects are all pitchers, but no names yet.
 leave it to the Marlins, already stacked with pitching prospect to want more pitching prospects for when they start dealing off their current ones.

Well they can't have Porcello so if Trahern isn't on that list I'm going to be even more pleased.

From Lee Sinis' Baseball America email newsletter:

The Marlins have traded 3B Miguel Cabrera and P Dontrelle Willis to

the Tigers for OF Cameron Maybin, P Andrew Miller, C Mike Rabelo and

3 prospects.

Lee

I don't think the Marlins could afford Cabrera or Willis once they hit free agency so the only question is whether this was better than what the Angels were offering. I suspect the Marlins will do OK over the long run with this deal.

I would think Cabrera would play 3rd with inge moving back to the super-sub role. Platoon Jones and Thames in left.

Some guy on the internet asserts the other 3 prospects are RHP Burke Badenhop, RHP Eulogio de la Cruz and RHP Dallas Trahern. No idea if he's right or not.

sorry....free press reports The package of prospects includes catcher Mike Rabelo, RHP Burke Badenhop, RHP Eulogio de la Cruz and RHP Dallas Trahern from the organization.

Thames may have just lost his roster spot. Inge will stay at 3B IMO.

Exactly how many young pitchers do the Marlins need? i know it is easier to trade a pitcher than a position player, but they have needs.

I would like to see Inge go back to being a utility guy. I like Inge but he is a rally killer.

They got a pretty big position prospect in Maybin. You can never have enough pitching in an organization. Everyone though the Marlins had a great young staff during Girardis year, but Girardi wore there arms out, and many suffered injury (most notably Josh Johnson).

I have to wonder if Inge will go back to catcher...after this year anyways. He was very good behind the plate, Pudge is up in years and we lack catching prospects.

That's all in there. You are talking the #2 prospect from last year and a top ten MLB in Miller, the #1 and top ten in Maybin, the #4 pitching prospect in the organization in Trahern, a guy that throws 100 in DLC, and Badenhop who was probably the edge of top Tigers pitching prospects. Plus they get a catcher with major league experience. Marlins did well here.

Good deal for both. Tigers are getting a future HOF'er that's still only 24 or 25 years old though. No brainer.
