Obviously he is older than Cano, but is there a more underrated player in the game than Polanco?

Being younger doesn't make a player better. It might make him a more hot commodity in trade talks, but it doesn't make him better. I would love to hear why you think Cano is a better hitter, though. Obviously Polanco is the better fielder, and I also contend he is the better hitter.

I agree but I think everyone is talking about now, not in three years. I want nothing to do with this conversation, I was just pointing out that Cano has a small sample size as far as career numbers.

Well my original point was comparing the 2008 Yanks lineup with the 2008 DET lineup. In 2007 Polanco was better than Cano. Over their careers Cano is better than Polanco. It is my viewpoint that Cano will be a better hitter than Polanco in 2008.

The only thing I will say is that for the Tigers and their line-up and fielding team, Polanco is the more ideal player regardless of stats.

I agree 1000%. Polanco fits what the Tigers need more than Cano would.

Polanco had a brutal 2006...

That means that any comparisons other than merely 2007 #s is going to skew Cano's way pretty easily...

Polanco is a very solid hitter, and is a VERY good fielder...

But even in his career year of 2007, Polanco's OPS was just .005 higher than Cano's...

Career year is a little strong considering that 05 was statistically nearly an identical year for Polanco. And the plate discipline that Polanco has developed isn't a flash in the pan ability like power can be. With his compact swing, and considering that he's only 32, I think he's a lot more likely to have more years like 05 and 07 than his pre .300 years.Bottom line, calling any hitting comparison between the two 'laughable' is flat out wrong. There's plenty of room for debate but any gap isn't all that large.

And personally, though I'll admit my bias as a Tigers fan, I'll take the plate discipline and ability to put the bat on the ball of Polanco all day. Free swinging strike out hitters drive me nuts (and that means you Granderson and Inge and Pudge).
