Tigers opening day help (1 Viewer)

Raging weasel

My Dad called me last night and said he was given tickets and wants me to take him down to the game. How early do I have to get to downtown to be able to park as close as possible to the stadium? My Dad is almost 70 and has a bad knee so walking can sometimes be hard for him especially if it's cold.

In Detroit?
The area around the park is safe, just don't leave the three block zone of Ford Field, Comerica, State Theater, Hockeytown, and Fox Theater. Besides, it's day time. If you're just dropping him off and parking 6 blocks away I don't think you have to be there by 9 am, but I wouldn't plan on arriving any later than 10. It'll probably take you an hour to travel the last mile.

WTF are you talking about? Greektown is more than three blocks from Ford Field and I've walked by myself at 3 am from Greektown to my hotel near Cobo Hall. The area from Third St to the Chrysler Freeway and between Jefferson and the Fisher is completely safe. As far as the initial poster goes Al Czervik and Foosball God are good people to ask because they work downtown. If not take the Chrysler Freeway to the Gratiot exit and go west towards downtown. On the corner of Gratiot and Madison there is a sweet parking lot with a good price for being that close. It's less than three blocks from the stadium. If you aren't on a budget just park behind the Hockeytown Cafe in the garage and walk across the street.

Just because you made that walk safely doesn't mean everybody does.

We got the tics for free so I really don't care what parking costs-the Fox garage is where I am hoping to get into but if it's full I'll try the madison/Gratiot lot as a backup plan.I've gone to the past 2 openers solo, worked until 10:00am and then walked to the park from Jefferson/I-75.I'd stop for lunch on the way and I was surprised at how full all the lots are 3 hours before the game. Thanks for the tips now I just need the weather to warm up a bit.

Do you even know the area I'm talking about or do you just go to the games and leave? Have you ever been to Corktown? Hubbard-Richard? Mexican town? Any of those? The downtown area is pretty safe and so are other parts of the city and I think you are just perpetuating a stereotype about the city that certainly does not apply to the downtown area. Next time after the game take a walk.

I walked to Comerica at 2:30 am last year to catch the end of the Yanks/Tigers game that suffered a 4 hour rain delay from Greektown, we had to walk back at 4:00 am because our car was parked in the Greektown garage. During our walks we saw a car jacking, the aftermath of a mugging, someone clearly trying to break into another car, and a knife get pulled on someone during an argument (I think they were a couple).I've been to several shows at the State Theater (I think they've changed the name though), the one time we parked on the wrong side of the theater we watched somebody get jumped by four very large men across the street.

I stayed one night at Cobo when the four of us had too much to drink before, during, and after a Wings game. There was a murder outside during the night.

There's a reason Detroit is near the top of the list when it comes to violence and crime, it is. Don't walk alone at night, this is irrelevant toward the topic at hand though. The Opening Day game is at 1:00 in the afternoon.

If you look at the crime statistics the downtown area has by far the fewest of everything. By far. It's no more dangerous than any other big city downtown area and muggings happen everywhere. If you download the Detroit crime statistics and look at google earth you will see where the bulk of the crime is and it's not in downtown. Link (these are supported by several federal crime reports I've looked at.)Sorry you had a bad experience but it is not the norm.

Fair enough. Just saying my night experiences away from the places I am familiar with downtown have not been pleasant, coincidence? Possibly. Still, I wouldn't have written anything negative had it been just one occurence. I live just outside of Cleveland, frequent downtown several times/month, and rarely have I ever not felt safe. There was a murder at a club down the street one night, but that's all I can think of off hand. That place has since shut down. I wish Detroit were a better city, I would have moved there when I was seeking employment two years ago instead of coming to Cleveland.
