Boy is that scout going to look stupid. The Tigers were foolish to rush Maybin last year. He had exactly 20 at bats against AA pitching before they bumped him to the majors. He spent nearly the entire year in A+ where he hit over .300 with authority in a league known as a pitcher's league thanks to the size of the ballparks. It isn't like they gave him away given they got the best young hitter in the game (when he cares to be) but Maybin is far from over-rated. He is never going to be a batting average champ, the pop in his bat and his speed are tough to match in baseball at his age.
And there you have it.It did not seem he had BB instincts. The Tigers did not hesistate to move Maybin feeling he was a possible bust.I am not a scout
The farm system has improved dramatically since the front office changes after the almost record setting losing season debacle, we just traded all of it away this offseason. Of course it's going to be lacking talent now, all of our good prospects have been shipped elsewhere. I understand the thought process behind both the Renteria and Miggy/Willis deals, win now, I'm just having a hard time coming to terms with how much solid young talent we've given up.Given the shape of the Tigers farm system over the years, I'd hesitate to put a lot of faith in their scouts. Their system has been god awful for many years and is arguably the worst in the American League this year. It is Rick Porcello at the top and then a long drop off to the #2 guy (Brandon Hamilton). When the best talent in your system, by far, is a HS kid who hasn't thrown a professional pitch, you have issues.
Actually it's not been bad over the past few years but you have to consider they just traded away most of their top prospects. Also Verlander, Granderson, Miller, Maybin, Jurrjens, and Zumaya were pretty damn good picks. They also just traded Delacruz, Trahern, Gorkys Hernandez, and Mike Rabello. All those guys are going to be major leaguers and Trahern and Jurrjens will make nice middle of the rotation guys sooner than later. Jurrjens was an undrafted FA and Trahern was a 34th round pick. They were both key pieces in the Renteria and Willis/Cabrera deals. Hernandez and Jurrjens are now ranked 3rd and 5th among Braves prospects while Trahern is 10th in the Marlins organization. So I think those players alone show the Tigers have done a pretty good job over the past 5 years or so in bringing in great talent. Iorg, Sizemore and Holliman all have the ability to make an eventual impact and Larish may be ready next year. Of course they are thin in the minors now but when you trade seven of your top ten prospects away that's what happens. If their scouting was so bad they wouldn't have had those players to deal so it has gotten exponentially better since Dombrowski took over the organization. Before that, I agree it was horrendous. But scouting is just one part of an organization anyway and the ability to pull the likes of Miller and Procello out of drafts is much more important to me.Their system has been god awful for many years and is arguably the worst in the American League this year. Can't argue with any of this.It is a weak system that has not produced much quality major league talent. The only AL system worse than them going into this year would be the White Sox and the Jays wouldn't be far behind. The trade for Cabrera and Willis was the right move because there was not going to be any significant help coming up from the farm system to address needs.
Well Rabello is a switch hitter with fairly good instincts albeit an average arm. He was the Tigers back-up all of last year so I got to see a lot of him and I think he's a decent player. A starter? Maybe, maybe not. But a solid back-up for sure. Delacruz throws 100 so there is raw talent to work with although he has some issues with control. Still a project. Trahern improved his ground ball to fly ball ratio last year a good sign for a sinker baller and he's gotten better in his rise through the ranks. I think he's going to be a solid starter. Hernandez is a slap hitter but he's extremely fast and will make an excellent fielder. Maybe something like Coco Crisp but he does have some work to do. I wouldn't be willing to make any real guesses about him for at least one more full year in the minors.De La Cruz is dinged, Trahern and Rabelo wouldn't make any other team but the Marlins. Hernandez - now there's a guy I've heard someone discuss in the terms of Maybin's shortcomings by that scout.
Yes, Maybin is a much better fit for a team that can afford to wait for the talent to mature. Tigers made the right move for a team that is composed to win now.Eephus said:Maybin is still far from a finished product. Baseball instincts can be taught much easier than raw talent. He may end up as one of those frustrating players who never lived up to massive expectations people have for him, but he should be good for Curtis Granderson-like production at a minimum, but just not this year. Now that the Marlins have their stadium deal, they can afford to be a little more patient with their kids.
Best post I've read today. The Marlins can't do the same stupid thing the Tigers did and rush Maybin. He needs another full year in the minors. The kid has limitless potential, but he was overmatched He is not 21 until April. Keep him in AAA. No need to rush him.I think Miguel Cabrera is an unbelievable talent, and the Tigers made a good trade, provided they can sign him long term. It's not very often young, franchise players are available. But I think Miller and Maybin are going to be excellent MLB players. I think the trade will work out for both teams.
I agree, when I said dump him I meant if they felt they were getting better value in return they would not hesitate. It is not like the John Smoltz deal..they are both young players. The Marlins can't do the same stupid thing the Tigers did and rush Maybin. JUPITER, Fla. (AP)—Cameron Maybin hit two home runs, and the Florida Marlins answered St. Louis’ home run binge Wednesday with one of their own.Five homers by the Marlins helped them overcome a six-run deficit to win 13-7.“It seemed like everything in the air today was out,” Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “I’m glad that we just kept chipping away.”Troy Glaus, Albert Pujols, Brian Barton and Ryan Ludwick homered for the Cardinals. Three of the Cardinals’ homers came off prospect Gaby Hernandez, a long-shot candidate for Florida’s rotation.Hanley Ramirez went 3-for-3 with a homer and Jorge Cantu and Maybin hit back-to-back home runs in the fourth for Florida. Luis Gonzalez hit a three-run homer in the sixth, and Maybin added another home run in the eighth.Maybin, a highly touted prospect who is hoping to win the starting center field job, came to the Marlins from Detroit as part of a blockbuster trade that sent Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to the Tigers.“He’s got some juice. You can see what everybody talks about,” Gonzalez said.
News: Cameron Maybin is off to a smoking start in Double-A, hitting .467 with two homers, a triple, RBI, three runs and two steals.Analysis: Maybin dominated Double-A last year, too. He likely belongs in at least Triple-A, but Carolina is much closer to South Florida than New Mexico. That is the good news. Maybin could be called up earlier than most elite minor league prospects, especially since he likely should have been the starting center fielder for the Marlins anyway.
I thought he struggled a bit in Spring Training which is probably why the Marlins started him down in Double-A. Let him get some of his confidence back and then promote him to AAA where he belongs at this point. I don't think the Tigers did him any favors bringing him up last year -- it was way too early. Florida is handling him the right way. No need to rush things with him. He is only 21.News: Cameron Maybin is off to a smoking start in Double-A, hitting .467 with two homers, a triple, RBI, three runs and two steals.Analysis: Maybin dominated Double-A last year, too. The guy hits it on a line and it's gone.Miggy Cabrera is a beast!! Last night they showed his swing a number of times in slow motion. The guy is very powerful and has great wrist action. And only 24 years of age.I would do the trade again today..maybe even more so.
