Tim gets a bad rap around here.

He may be a blowhard at times but at least he tries to discuss things in a calm, rational manner and seems to truly listen to alternative views.

JJ pretends to be calm and rational but refuses to acknowledge alternative viewpoints with anything more than a dismissive nod. It is difficult to believe that he is ever doing anything more than trolling.

I don't think it is fair to compare the two on any level except for the vitriol they seem to inspire around here.
:goodposting:

Tim also doesn't play the "Woe is me, I'm such a victim" card like JJ does. Then again, in 11 years here, I honestly can't recall anyone playing that card like JJ does.

Not even sure what we're supposed to be debating. I already explained myself in some detail with regard to the issue you raised. If you have a point to make, make it. I'll respond to you.
:chicken:

buck buck buck buck
is that a small herd of deer ?

I guess I should have said buc...
Orrrr...Cluck?
Bok Bok Bok is the approved chicken sound IMO.
a calm chicken i suppose...but a chicken in distress makes a BA-GOCK noise
So far, the chicken sound discussion is much more interesting.

Ba Gock!
I think it would be more of a bauck bauck bauck bauck ba gauck
I question whether chicken's beaks can properly form the G sound.
:lmao:

Maybe it's just because today has been a rough morning here at work, but the chicken sound debate is killing me right now.

I am just sick of Tim throwing out the phrase Institutionalized racism without seeming to even know what it even means.

I for one am surprised that Tim only has 4% of the posts in here so far

Significantly below his 21.5% contribution average

Does it have an accepted definition? I know for a fact that the whole "Racism is over" thing is simply not true, despite the Supreme Courts rulings lately but to define Institutionalized racism seems like a daunting task.

This is because he takes an initial position without any actual knowledge. He forms an opinion out of thin air, states it, then others explain why he's wrong and then he adjusts as needed.

It's like he just wants to ring in first on Family Feud and then yells out "NAKED GRANDMA!"

Fine. Don't worry, I'll make it short.

African-Americans suffered through centuries of slavery in this country followed by a century of Jim Crow discrimination. Though most of that has vanished since the civil rights movement, the legacy of it remains- in the utter poverty of so many black people, the disintegration of family life, poor education, crime, etc. If as a result of all this, a certain number of blacks see racism even when it doesn't exist, or when an even smaller number express racism themselves, it should come as no surprise to anyone. It's also of very little significance.

While certain white groups, mostly immigrants, have faced some discrimination in the past, it was never equal to the black experience, nor were they discriminated against for being white. Certainly anyone growing up white in this country has no institutionalized memory of racism, no fear of being stopped by police because of their skin color, and, statistically, face much better odds of a good education, a better standard of living, and economic success. So when I hear white conservatives complain about discrimination and a "double standard", I think it's pathetic.

Your turn.
Try being white and walking in South Chicago
I've done it plenty of times.

I think it means whatever one wants it means. For instance, just because more Asians are admitted to colleges than others, does not mean the institutions have policies which somehow inherently favor Asians, it could mean Asians perform better in schools. In fact, the policies in place discriminate against Asians because they require higher scores than other races. To look at results and cry "Institutionalized Racism" while ignoring the actual causes of the results is a bit mind-numbing.

I don't think that is entirely true and even if it were I don't see why people get so mad about it. Would it be better if he had an unrefined position and completely dismissed any counter arguments (like JJ)? I like that Tim will change his mind on issues; that's growth. And I think he uses the FFA as a source of knowledge to help refine his beliefs. I think that we all know that posting on any topic in here is bound to find you an expert on that topic who can help you understand the issue better. You need look no further than johnjohn and his physics lesson. However JJ refused to learn from that lesson and held fast to his stance (hence my belief that he is nothing more than a troll), Timmy would have actually learned from that experience and given thanks for the lesson.

It takes a truly special brand of troll to make us appreciate what we have in Tim.

Anyone know how to get vomit out of a keyboard?

It would be totally fine if it happened about 1/10th as much as it does now, imo.

Since this thread is going nowhere, I propose a fake debate.

I will play the roll of Timmy and someone else can play johnjon. Someone else can pick the topic.

Thanks for the kind words, Chaka. And Notorious TRE, your criticism is not unwarranted. I DO make opinions too often without being aware of the facts beforehand. It's a fault of mine and I'm trying to change it. Thanks for pointing it out.

johnjohn challenged me to a debate in this thread. I figured that it was more of his dumb shtick and that he'd be unable to respond to a real discussion or debate- but I went ahead against my better judgment and posted my opinion on the subject matter he wanted to discuss. That was over 12 hours ago. As I anticipated, there was no response. I doubt there will be. If there is, I'll reply to it, I guess.

Mad Libs can be difficult to fill out. Give him time....

I wish the people in here would just relax, from the initial post he laid out a little groundwork for this thing, post, respond in 24hours, respond, etc. With everyone else's opinions and extras being thrown in this is getting ruined. Should have known it would never be a few posts then we could all say what we wanted too...until it hits the 24 hours mark, he is fine to post, don't give either side any extra information, facts, etc and let them hammer it out.

The topic will be White discrimination. You seem to think white people NEVER face discrimination but you only use emotion , not logic to explain why. This thread is your chance to use logic to explain your point.

After you do that I will have up to 24 hours to respond to your point and when I do you'll have up to 24 hours to respond to mine. (if either of us fail to respond within 24 hours that's a forfeit)
The true skill of the master troll is patience...

Yes. My ex wife had family across the south side.

I get the feeling that many of those who say they don't like Tim only say that because he has proven them wrong, or forced them to re-think positions. When you post as often as Tim your bound to rub some folks the wrong way. He hasn't done anything to be hated in my opinion, and I say more power to you Tim!

JJ on the other hand.... Terrible alias and schtick.

So far, I have it scored with johnjohn in the lead
Which is why I see Tim with checkmate here. If johnjohn does not reply within 24 hours, he is disqualified per his own rules. If he does respond, it will certainly subtract from his position and cost him points.

Tim's waffling drives me nuts occasionally but is generally a solid poster and nowhere near in the same league and johnjohn, who does nothing but troll and provides absolutely nothing interesting to this forum ever. Tim's contributions are in the net positive, whereas johnjohn in a short time has to be triple-digit negative.
