What was the point of creating this waiting period in the first place?
I read it somewhere today but I can't find it, but apparently it is so the league can calculate the salary cap and what not.
Yep. July 1 is the start/finish of NBA's fiscal year. They spend the first week of July counting all the money they made over the previous season, make estimates on the new season's revenues, then set the financial parameters for the new season, including the new salary cap and luxury tax threshold.
So why not just make the negotiating period.......today?
Because having a whole week of speculation without any signings is a great way to keep the NBA in the sports news cycle in the first week of July.

Clipper players and coaches have barricaded themselves in DJ's house until he signs at midnight. :lmao:

I Love This Game! It's FAAAANTASTIC!!

@Ethan_Booker: CUBAN: then it's settled. we tunnel in through the basement

VILLANUEVA: i'm completely hairless. will that help?

CUBAN: i mean it won't hurt

@WojYahooNBA: So far, Clippers able to keep everyone else out of house, including Cuban, agents. Everyone. They're in four-corners until midnight Eastern.

What the heck? Is it like DJ is so inept he will sign with whoever is sitting in front of him at midnight?
That, and the Clippers are such a historically inept franchise, that they need to go to such lengths to keep a free agent who had a handshake deal with another team already. Jordan and the Clippers deserve each other.

It would be so awesome if the Mavs were like oh screw it and started a full court press on Aldridge and then he decommitted and so then the Spurs go after K-Love.

no i mean seroiusly brohans this is how a reputable franchise acts i mean nothing but class and respecability hell at this point i guess just go back jordan and then we can all laugh when you lose in the second round for the rest of ever as chris paul yells at you even though he said you were bffs take that to the bank bromiogs

Apparently a verbal is agreement is not worth the paper it's written on.
Good thing the NBA doesn't allow verbal agreements until midnight tonight
This is plainly incorrect. They only allow verbal agreements until tonight. Then you can sign for real.
Nope...technically they can't talk specifics until midnight tonight, so legally enter into binding verbal agreements.
Correct - they don't allow contracts. They definitely allow verbal commitments to sign with a team. Read the CBA.

Section II, Article 14 defines the moratorium period. They cannot enter into agreements about the terms (an oral contract) but they can absolutely commit to one team or another. Page 56 is where the section begins, if you have access to the CBA.

They cannot reduce such agreement to any terms, but they can negotiate over the terms. Nothing is therefore binding, so Jordan can do whatever he wants, but executives around the league are not happy with LAC right now. There are unwritten rules about this ####, like not pursuing somebody who has given the verbal "yeah I think I'll sign these, pending blah blah."

I personally respect what the Clippers are doing. Going all out to get their guy. I feel like if a more reputable franchise did this, everyone would say how willing they are to do what is necessary.

Meanwhile Paul Pierce is yelling at teammates to stay off the landline so he can surf the Internet.

A more reputable franchise wouldn't do this. That's kind of the point.

You really think so? So a team would be content to be a borderline playoff team opposed to potential contender? Put me in the this category then. I don't see much of a difference between this or a poison pill offer sheet.

@bruce_arthur: I bet all the Clippers in the house are just reading Twitter and laughing and laughing and watching the door with a gun

I don't care what anyone else says, this is awesome and fun.

And if I was an NBA owner I would do the same thing. I would owe it to my fans to do everything in my power to put the best team on the court. That is what is important at the end of the day.

Looking forward to Cuban reaction if/when Jordan signs with the Clips.
Over/Under $500,001 - amount of fines he'll be paying after said reaction?
What can he really say? The player wasn't under contract. The Clippers, however dooshy they are, didn't really do anything wrong.

Urban Meyer (grandmaster doosh) has the same principles on his recruiting circuit and it works pretty well for him too. Whatever it takes, none of these people are friends.
